EXTENSION DEVICE FOR BRACELETS.
application mea August a, 192e. smal No. 126,817.
This invention relates to an extension device for bracelets more particularly watch bracelets for holding a wrist Watch to the arm of the wearer; and the object of this invention is to provide a plurality of sections hinged together to be folded one upon the other to make the bracelet of a size to snugly fit the wrist of the wearer and which may be unfolded to extend the length of the bracelet to permit it to be withdrawn from the arm of the wearer without detachment ofy any of the parts. I
A further object of this invent1on 1s to rovide a means to adjust the effective workmg length of the bracelet when on the arm of the wearer.
' A still further object is to provide a pm extending throughthe side walls of the deviceto be manually engaged and moved to initially open or unfold one of the sections relative to another.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consistsk of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out 1n the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: I
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the im roved device in its relation to a wrist watch racelet.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are perspective views of the different sections of the device.
Figure 5 is a central sectional elevation of the device in closed position.
Fi ure 6 is a central sectional plan view of t e device looking from the bottom thereof.
Figure 7 is a sectional elevation taken on line 7-7 of` Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a central sectional, elevation of the device in extended position.
Figure 9 is a plan view of the device ywith the sections extended asshown in Figure 7.
Figure 10 is a perspective view showing r the device with the sections partially folded.
, It is found desirable in bracelet construction especially watch bracelets to provide a device interposed between the ends of the watch bracelet by which the effective working length of the bracelet for holding the watch snugly on the wrist may be extended to permit the bracelet to be passed overthe hand of the wearer without detaching any of the parts from each other or from the watch. It 1s also found desirable to provide means in the extension members by which the effective working length of the bracelet may be adjusted -when on the arm ofthe wearer to sn'ugl fit different sized arms and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention and showing one construction of extension member by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
With reference to the drawings, l0 designates a. wrist Watch and 11, 12 parts of the watch bracelet for holding the watch onto the arm of the wearer. These parts are each provided at one end with hooks 13 for engaging the bails 14 of a wrist watch' and interposed between their opposite ends 15 and 16 there is an extension device 17 whlch 1s composed of a plurality of sections 18,19 and 2O hinged together and foldable one upon the other.
The bottom section 18 is provided with a bottom wall 21 and side Walls 22 which are longitudinally slotted as at 23 and slidable in this slot is a pin 24 to which the end 15 of the bracelets part 11 is attached.
The intermediate section 19'is hinged to the end section 18 by means of openings 24, 25 and pins 26, as illustrated in Figure 9.
The side walls of the section 27 are spaced apart by cross bars 28a, a suiiicient distance to be folded and fit within the side walls of the section 18. f
A series of notches 28 are provided in each* `The pin 24 is provided' with heads 29 which may be manually engaged to slide the pin towards the hinge yconnection 24-25 which serves to swing the section 19 upon its pivots 26 in initia ly opening the extension device.
The top section 20 is hingedA to the in-.
termediate section 19 by means of openings 30, 31 and pivots 32 and comprises a top wall 33 iwith side walls or Hanges 34 which are of a suiicient distance apart to engage the outer side of the walls 22 of the bottom section when the sections are in folded relation. o
Ears are provided at the free end of the top section 20, which ears have .openings 36 for receiving means lfor attaching the end 16 of the bracelet part 12 thereto. These ears are so 'ositioned relative to the end. cross bar 28a o the intermediate section that they snap over and frictionaly engage this cross bar, as illustrated 1n Flgure 5, to releasably retain the top section 1n folded closed position.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an eXtendible device which may be folded upon itself to it snugly about the wrist and retain a wrist watch in the desired posltion and yet one which may be unfolded to permit the watch to be withdrawn over the hand without detaching any of the parts, the initial movement of extension being by means of knobs or heads on the pii1 24 to be slid longitudinally of the device.
It will also be seen that I have provided a means by which the effective working lengthl of the bracelet4 may be adjusted when on the wrist of the wearer by simply moving the adjusting pin by means of the knobs or heads v at its ends.
-Th'eforegoing description is directed. solely towards the construction illustrated, -but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all theV mechanical changes to which thedevice is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim; 1. A wrist watch bracelet having two strap parts, two sections hinged together and having means connecting theirA ends to the ends of said strap parts, one of said 'sections having side walls,. spaced'cross bars connecting said walls, and means on the other b of said sections for snapping over and fridtionally engaging one of said cross bars for holding said sections in folded-over closed position.
2. An -extendible member for a bracelet,
including sections having side walls hinged' together, formations in the side walls of said sections, a pin engaging said formations and extending outwardly through the side walls of said sections to be manually engaged, said pin andv formations co-operating to cause said sections to initially swing apart in moving the device to extended position upon movement of said pin relative to said formations.
3. An extendibledevice for a bracelet or the like including connected sections, one of said sections having side walls with slots therein, a pin sliolablel in said slots, and adapted to be connected to a bracelet, another of said sections hinged to said slotted section and having side walls with spaced notches to engage said pin in various different positions of adjustment.
l 4. An extendible device" for a bracelet or the ylike inclu-ding asection having side Wallsv with slots thereinja pin slidable in said slots, and adapted to be connected to a bracelet, a section hinged to said first section and having inclined notches in its side Walls to receive said pin to secure said sections together when in closed working position said pin being slidable in said slot and notches to cause said sections to initially swing apart in moving the device to extended position.
5'. In a wrist watch attachment having two strap parts, an eXtendible device comprising end sections, means for securing one of said strap parts to one end sect-ion, an intermediate section hingedly connected at its opposite ends to said end sections whereby said sections may be folded one upon the other, means for securing the other strap| part to the other end section and formations on one of the said end sections and said intermediate section cooperating with said strap securing means for adjusting and securing the eliective fol-ded or working length of one of said strap parts, and frictional means between the intermediate section and one of said other sections for securing them in closed position. v
A6. A wrist watch bracelet having two parts, an extendible device comprising an end section having a bottom wall with slotted side walls, a pin having one of the bracelet parts connected thereto and slidable in the slots of'said side walls, anend section having a top wall and side Walls to slidaly engage said slotted side wallsl and having the other bracelet part connected thereto, an intermediate section hinged at its opposite ends to said end sections and having side walls with spaced inclined notches and cross bars connecting said walls, said notches being engageable with said pin in different positions of said pin along said slots whereby to adjust the working length of the bracelet and secure the intermediate section in folded position, andl frictional- LEWIS S.
