Description
A rin m5. 1 53mm P. KAVANA-Gfl fl GUARD FOR GAS STOVE-S.
Filed June 2, 1924 Pefef fi'avazzajgfi INVENTOR WITNESS: v
ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 28, 1925.
UNITED STATES PETER KAVANAGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GUARD FOR Application filed June 2,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PETER KAVANAGH, a citizen of the U. S. of America, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Guards for Gas Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a guard or protector for the control cocks of a gas stove.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device which is adapted to shield the cocks of a gas stove so that the same may be protected against accidental turning on when the stove is not in use.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a guard which is capable of protecting the control cocks of the oven as well as the control cocks arranged along the front of the stove.
A further object is to provide a guard which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and easy to apply or remove from a gas stove.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly 'pointed out in the appended claims, and
are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gas stove with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line, 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 'of Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a perspective view of the parts constituting the guard showing the same removed from the stove.
It has been found that children who are too young to realize the danger of gas fumes, have a habit of turning on the gas cocks of a gas stove without knowledge of their guardians, with the result that gas is permit-ted to escape which ofttimes proves dangerous. Itis therefor my intention to construct a device to prevent the accidental opening of the cocks by an unauthorized person and which permits the cocks to be operated without undue effort by an authorized person.
Referring more particularly to the draw- GAS STOVES.
1924. Serial No. 717,374.
ing the reference numeral 10 designates a gas stove of the usual construction which includes a plurality of as cocks 11 arranged along the front 0 the stove at the top thereof, and 12 designates the cocks which are disposed at the side of the stove for controlling the flow of gas to the oven. My mvention is designated in its entirety as at 13 and includes a part 14 for protectmg the cocks 11 and a part 15 which protects the cocks 12.
The part 14 is constructed of a relative- 1y light material such as sheet iron and is provided with a. bottom wall 16 from which rises a front wall 17, end walls 18 and a relatively short rear wall 19. The bottom wall 16 and the rear wall 19 are cut away to provide spaced slots 20, which slots receive the respective cocks 11 when the part is applied to the stove. When the part 14 is in applied position, the short rear Wall 19 is engaged beneath the flange 21 of the frame of the stove, and the bottom wall 16 rests upon the manifold pipe 22 which supplies the gas to the burners. An opening orslot 23 is provided in the bottom wall 16 adjacent one end thereof for a purpose to be presently described.
The part 15 which constitutes the guard for the cocks 12 is constructed of the same material as the part 13, but is relatively Usshaped in cross section for the major portion of its-length, and has one end reduced as at 24 for insertion' through the opening 23 of the part 14:. The reduced portion 24.- has secured thereto a chain 25 which carries a cotter pin 26 for insertion through an opening 27 in the part 24 to hold the part connected with the part 14. When the part 15 is in applied position, the same is adapted to house the cocks 12 to prevent the same from bein accidentally turned to an open position. Vhen access is desired to the cocks 12, the pin 26 is removed from the part 14 as will be clear- 1y understood.
From the foregoin description, it will be seen that the coc s 11 may be easily reached by an authorized person, but cannot be reached by a child as the front wall 17 will prevent the same.
lVhile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that from the spirit of my invention, 1 did not limit myself to the exact details of construction heretofore set forth nor to anything less than the Whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
Vhat is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a gas stove having burner cocks arranged a ong the front thereof, of a protector for said cocks including a pair of separable parts arranged at right angle to each other, means for attaching one of said parts to the gas stove, and means for supporting the other part from said first part.
2. In combination with a gas stove having burner cocks arranged along the thereof, of a protector for said cocks including a pair of separable parts arranged at right angle to each other, means for removably attaching one of said parts to the gas stove, and means for removably supporting the other part from said first part.
3. In combination with a gas stove having burner cocks disposed along the front and sides thereof, of a protector including a pair of parts, one of said parts attached to the front of the stove for protecting the cocks arranged thereon and having an opening disposed at one end thereof, the other part depending from the first part for protecting the cooks along the side of the stove, a portion formed on said last part for insertion through the opening, and means carried by the portion of said last part for locking the two parts together.
4. A protector for gas stoves including a pair of parts each constituting a guard, one of said parts adapted to be attached to the horizontal front of a gas stove, and the other of said parts depending from said first part and disposed at right an le thereto for protecting the cooks along t e vertical side of the gas stove.
5. A protector for gas stoves ineludin a pair of parts each constituting a guar one of said parts comprising a relatively high front wall and a shorter rear Wall for detachable connection with the front flange of a gas stove, the other part being disposed at right angle to the first part.
6-. A protector for gas stoves including a pair of parts each constituting a guard, one
front of said parts comprising a relatively high front wall and a shorter rear Wall for coaction with a portion of a gas stove, the other of said parts being U-shaped in cross section and disposed at right angle tothe first part.
7. A protector for gas stoves including a pair of parts each constituting a guard, one of said parts comprising a relatively high front wall and a shorter rear Wall for coaction with a portion of a gas stove, the other of said parts being U-shaped in cross section and disposed at right angle to the first part, and means for removably securing said parts together.
8. A protector for gas stoves comprising a member having a front Wall, side walls, a rear wall of a height less than the front wall, a bottom, and slots formed in said bottom and extending through said rear wall.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
PETER KAVANAGH.
