4Beit known that I, JAMES HUGH Mc` FADDEN, a citizen of the United States, re at Farmer,'in the county of Hanson and tate of South Dakota, have' invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadfto the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improve ments in smoking pipes and it is Van object of the invention to provide asdevice of this general character having novel and im proved means whereby the scattering of sparks is prevented. and whereby the liability of fire from such source is eliminated. It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character with novel and improved means whereby nicotine may be readily collected and removed. l The invention consists in the` details of construction and in the combination and arhk rangement of the several parts of my improved smoking pipe whereby certain important advantages are attained and the de` `vice rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advanta geous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pipe constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

` As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes an elongated body provided in one end portion with an axially extending bore 1 constitutinga bowl into which the tobacco is adapted to be applied or packed while the opposite end portion 2 of the body constitutes a stem and is provided with an axially arranged bore 3, said bore 3 being separated from the bore 1 by apartition et. Disposed through the partition Il is a restricted opening 5 affording requisite communication between the inner ends `of the bores 1 and 3.

Engageable within the bore 3 of the stem endgportion 2 of the body B is a mouth piece 6 of anydesired type. The inner end portion of the bore 3 has in communication therewith a zlaterally directedv opening 7 in4 which istlireaded or otherwise engaged the open end portion of a cup 8,said cup 8 being preferably downwardly disposed when the pipe is in use. This cup 8 serves to collect nicotine and moisture trapped within the inner portion of the bore 3 and as said cup 8 may be readily removed it will be obvious that the pipe at all times may be readily maintained in a highly sanitary condition.

Rotatably disposed through the outer end i portion of the body B and intersecting the bore l is a plug 9, said plug being held in desired applied position by the pin 10 disposed 'through one end portion thereof and the washer 11 and nut 12 operatively engaged with the opposite end portion thereof or more particularly with the outstande `ing threaded extension or shank 14. The' novel features of my invention will The portion of the plug 9 within the bore 1 is provided tliereacross with the recess 15 which, when the plug 49 is in one position, as indicated in Figure fl, readily permits the tobacco to be properly placed or packed within the bowl. The resultant reduced portion 16 of the through `a relative y minute opening 17 which, when the plug 9 is in its second position as illustrated in Figure 3, provide draft openings whereby the requisite burning of the tobacco charge is permitted yet at the same time holds the ashes and sparks against discharge from the bowl of the pipe. This is of particular advantage as it substantially eliminates the possibility of lire together with the indiscriminate scattering of the ashes and 'sparks which in a great many instances renders obnoxious the smoking of the pipes of the types now generally in use.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with my iiivention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility .plug has directed therewith which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and Spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter' claimed.

I claim l. As a new article of manufacture, a smoking pipe comprising an elongated body having a bore disposed axially therethrough, a partition intersecting said bore dividing the body into a bowl and a stein, said partition having an opening therethrough communicating with such bowl and stein7 a mouth piece engageable with the stern portion of the body, and a rotatable plug disposed through the body adjacent to the outer portion of the bowl and intersecting said bowl, the portion of the plug within the bowl having a recess thereacross to permit filling of the bowl when the plug is in one position.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a smoking pipe comprising an elongated body having a bore disposed axially therethrough,

a partition intersecting said bore dividing the body into a bowl and a stem, said partition having anpopening therethrough communicating with such bowl and stem, a mouth piece engageable with the stem portion of the body, and a rotatable plug disposed through the body adjacent to the outer portion of the bowl and intersect-ing said bowl, the portion ofthe plug within the bowl having a recess thereacross to pel'- mit lillingof the bowl when the plug is in one position, said plug is also provided therethrough with a relatively minut-e opening' communicating with the bowl when the plug is in a second position.
