To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, FOSTER M. SPURR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mattapan, in the' county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe! Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in attachments for tobacco pipes and has for its object to provide means readily attachable to a pipe by which a supply of air may be introduced into the tobacco below the burning area thereof from outside the pipe. By thus supplying an additional amount of air the quality of the smoke may be controlled so that it will not. sting or bite. which has been treated with a suitable scent so that the flavor of the smoke will be varied as may be desired.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the bowl of thepipe which may be .of any suitable material and size and which communicates with the usual stem 2 at its lower end.

The attachment which constitutes the present invention comprises a tube 3 which has a hooked or bent portion near one end so that it may be hung over the upper edge of the pipe'bowl with its short leg forming the inlet 4, projecting outwardly from the bowl and its relatively long leg forming the outlet 5 within the bowl.

Such a construction is shown in Fig. 2 and in this form the lower end of the tube has a bevel or cut away portion 8 through which the outlet 7 opens.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 4 a cup-like receptacle 9 is mounted on the curved portion of the tube and communicates with the interior thereof through an opening 10. This receptacle is, as shown, intended to be more or less filled with a suitable absorbent material 11, such as cotton, which may be treated with a flavoring or perfuming material so that the air drawn into the bowl through the tube 3 will convey such scent or perfume to the smoke as it enters the passage 6 of the pipe stem.

While it is preferred to arrange the attachment as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 in which the longer limb of the bent tube is within the bowl and the attachment is supported by extending across the edge of the bowl yet some of the advantages of the invention may be attained if the device is mounted in a passage formed in the stem outside of the 'jacent wall of the bowl as shown in Fig. 6

The purpose and operation of the attachment will it is thought be readily understood from the foregoing description and the drawings. It will be seen that by the attachment a supply of fresh air will be admitted from outside the bowl to the lower portion of the interior thereof below the main body of tobacco and caused to mingle with the smoke to temper or agreeably affect the flavor and character thereof.

The attachment may be made of metal or any other suitable material, is relatively inexpensive, can be easily a plied to or removed from an ordinary to acco pipe.
