'ZYPE MEMBER FOR PRINTING STAMPS Filed Feb. 15, 1922 Patented Aug. 26, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. PANNIER, an, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIGNon To PAN- NIER BROS. STAMP 00., F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION 0P PENNSYLVANIA.
TYPE MEMBER FOR PRINTING STAMPS.
Application filed February 16, 1922. Serial No. 536,866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. PANNIER, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Members for Printing Stamps, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a type or printing block for a hand printing stamp of the kind shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 511,588, filed October 31, 1921.
in my said application there is shown a stamp having type carrying bars extending there-across, on which the type members are removably carried. The type members are made of compressible rubber and are pro vided with a central slot so arranged as to straddle the type carrying bars.
The present invention has for its object to provide a removable type member preferably made of pliable or compressible rub her which will be retained in position between the type carrying bars instead of straddling them.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a transverse section through a hand stamp, showing type members in place thereon;
:zo Fig. 2 is a. bottom View of a part of the stamp;
Fig. 3 shows one of the type or printing members in perspective; and
Fig. at is a detail View showing how the as block may be applied or removed without disturbing the type bars or other type members.
In the drawings, A represents a hand stamp constructed in accordance with my co-pending application above referred to, and forming no novel part of the present invention, except in combination with the type members hereinafter described. Extending transversely across its lower arcuate face are separate removable T-shaped type holding bars 5. These bars may be arranged as described in my said application, with their ends engaging in spaced apart notches 6 in the side strips 7.
The type members 8 are preferably made of relatively soft or pliable rubber and are in the form of blocks having suitable dimensions, depending on the spacing of the bars 5 and the size of lettering desired.
Extending outwardly from each of the two side edges of the top portion of the block is a lip 9 forming a continuation of the top portion of the block. Spaced below each lip and on the bottom portion of the block is a similar lip 10, the width of which is less than the width of the lip 9. An intervening channel 11 is thus formed. The width of the block from the edge of lip 9 to the edge of the other lip 9 corresponds to the width of the space between the stem portions of two parallel type holding bars. The width of the top of the blocks is substantially equal to the distance between the center lines of parallel bars.
The blocks may be placed on and removed from the type bars by sliding them between two bars from the free ends thereof, with the edges of the T-shaped bars in the channels 11, and the lip 9 over the bar and the lip 10 under it. They may also be applied or removed by compressing them and bowing them out, as illustrated in dotted lines in F ig. 4,. When applied to the type carrying bars 5 in adjacent rows, the edges of the blocks in each row will be substantially contiguous to those in the next row.
I claim as my invention:
1. A printing device comprising a frame having a type carrying face, a plurality of holding bars extending across said face, and resilient type blocks interposed between said bars, said blocks having grooves in the bar engaging edges thereof in which the bar is received, said grooves having a depth substantially equal to half the width of the bars, whereby the bar will be overlapped across substantially half its width by said type block and adjacent rows of type thereby have abutting edges, the distance between the bars being substantially greater than the width of the bars.
2. A printing device comprising a frame having a type carrying surface, a plurality of holding bars extending across the type carrying surface in spaced relation with one another, and resilient type blocks interposed between said bars and in engagement therewith, the bar engaging edges being grooved to project under and over the bar, the width of the blocks being materially greater than the width of the bars, the thickness of the blocks being substantially less than their width, whereby they may be readily bowed.
outwardly out oi engagement with said bars.
3. A printing device comprising a frame having av type carrying face, a plurality of. spaced; apart holding bars extending. across the face, said" bars having transversely projecting lips, pliable type blocks resting on said type carrylng face and intenposedbetween.
the bars and in engagement With the bars, the blocks being pnoyid'edi' with. a gnoove along each bar engaging edge into Which the flanges ofthe bars extend; a-ncl providing lips on the block extending under: and over,
theinner and outer sunfiaoes of the. flanges, the; lips; that": overlie, theiflanges,v being substantially equal to half the Width of the bar the lips projecting under the inner edge being shorter, said? blocks having a. Width very much in excess of their thickness, the blocks also having a Width greaterthan the Widtlu 01:?. the flanges of the bars, whereby they may be readily bowed in disengagement with. the bars;
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
