MECHANISM FOR HOLDING TYPE LINES.

T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY C. OsnonN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Holding Type Lines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to mechanism for holding lines of type. The general object of the invention is to provide a type holding member so arranged that when type having a short base are secured therein the combined height of the type and the holder will constitute the same height-topaper as ordinary type. I
It is frequently desirable to use cast line slugs, or individual type which are type high, in conjunction with type having short bases, such as the well known multigraph type. When this latter character of type is so used it becomes necessary to provide suitable means whereby the printing surface will be brought to a level with the printing surface of the type high type, and to'accomplish this result is one of the objects of my invention.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a removable holderfor a line of short individual type so constructed that the line may be treated as a unit and may be held on a type bed in printing position, so that such short type can be used in conjunction with type slugs orindividual type of the usual height.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby printing slugs may be 40 used on a cylindrical printing drum having type rails,such as a multigrapl1,and wherein short type, such as the usual multigraph type, may be used in conjunctionwith the printing slugs, the short type being provided with an auxiliary base whereby their heightto-paper is the same as that of the printing slu 1% still further object of the invention; is to provide a cylindrical printing drum having a circumferentially grooved type receiving chase so arranged as to receive printing slugs and other printing characters ad acent the type carried by the rails mentioned. The chase, according to my invention has its type holding grooves disposedabovethe surmetal and hence are resilient.

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, I have shown at 10 a suitable type bed indicated as a drum which may be -mounted to rotate in any desired manner.
Mounted upon the type bed 10 I show a curved chase 12 which is indicated as fitting directly upon the drum. Theupp'er surface of the chase 12 ma be provided with rails 14 or other means or the purpose of receiving grooved type or cast slugs 16. The chase '12 maybe provided with end flanges and may have lugs 17 on its under surface for receiving a securing element to be presently "described.
Adjacent the end of the chase, I show a plurality of cast aligned slugs 20. These slugs may, however, be omitted if desired.
Arranged adjacent these aligned slugs I show a plurality of type holding members '25. Each type holding member 25 is indicated as comprising a base portion 26 and a pair of diverging side members 27. The relation of the base 26 and the sides 27 is such that they form an approximate U. The members 25 are preferably made of sheet The ends of the side members are indicated as provided with type engaging portions shown as inturned flanges forming shoulders 28. My holder is: particularly adaptd for use with grooved type 30, which type or a cast line of grooved type. v The,
type may comprise a number of individual sides 27 of the type holder, if intended for mounting on a drum, diverge and are preferably arranged so that each side of the holder lies in a radial plane which passes through the axis of the drum. This arrangement allows the type holders to have a complete face to face engagement and lessens the liability of the members being inaccurately assembled, thus avoiding irregularities in the printing. The holders 25 are preferably so formed that until the holder is mounted the shoulders 28 do not engage the neck 31 on the type but allow the latter to move freely above the shoulders, but when mounted they may spring inwardly sufliciently tobind the type at the neck; or, if desired, the type heads may sufliciently overhang the holders so that the heads come into abut-ting engagement. v p
In order to secure the chase, the slugs and the type holders in position, I may provide suitable anchoring means here shown as members 3% and 35. The member 34 is preferably fixed in position while the member 35 is slidably mounted on the drum by reason of slotted portions 36 which receive screws 3?. To provide adjustment a number of holes 38 maybe provided for the screw 37.
In the preferred form of my invention, the holder 25 is provided with slots 40 and the end portions of the slots are turned, as at 41, to provide a shoulder which extends substantially parallel with the flanges 28 on the type holder. The slugs 20 have apertures therethrough similar to the apertures 40 and 41 in the holder 25. A fastening member, shown as a rod 42, is secured to the anchors and 2-35. This rod is indicated as extending through the lugs 17 on the chase, through the apertures in the slugs 20 and through I the notches in the type holding-members 25.
The fastening rod may be provided with suitable tightening means, such as a nut 44:, at one or both its ends.
As an alternate method of securing type holders in place, I may cut away the lower portion of the ends of the type holders,'as as 50, and may form a notch 51 above the cut away portion. A suitable fastening member 52 which may be a segmented metallic band, may serve to hold the printing member in position. The band 52 may be slotted, as at 53, to receive a fastening member 54,
which engages the drum.
In using machines which are adapted primarily to print from grooved type, it frequently is desirable to use in the same machine printing slugs which are typehigh and by constructing a chase, such as I have shown, the printing surface of the type carried by the rails may be made to be at the same height asslugs whereby a uniform impression is secured. Furthermore, the height of the type carried in the holder is the sameas the height of the printing slugs Having thus described my invention, I
claim:
1. In combination with a printing drum, a type holding member thereon, said type holding member comprising a sheet metal strip bent to form abase portion and two side portions arranged substantially U- shaped, the sides of the U being disposed in radial planes passing through the center of the drum.
2. A resilient U-shaped type holder adapted to be compressed to lock a line of type therein and having a longitudinally extending shoulder thereon, and an arcuate holding member adapted to engage said.

3. The combination with a rotary drum, of resilient sheet metal type holding members arranged'thereon side by side, each type holding member comprising a substantially U-shaped portion having a base and a pair of diverging side walls, said side walls lying substantially in radial planes which converge at a point.
4i. The combination with a printing drum, of a one piece sheetmetal resilient type holding member thereon, said type holding member being U-shaped, the sides of the U being arranged in radial planes passing,
through the center of the drum, and a retaining member extending through the holder above the base ofthe U.
5. In combination, a printing drum having type rails mountedin a chase thereon, type on said rails, type holding members havin type therein, all said type being arranged at the same height, and means engag ing said chase, and said holding member for securing them on said drum.
6. In a printing device, a drum, resilient sheet metal type holding members arranged thereon side by side, each type holding member comprisingv a substantially U-shaped portion having a base and a pair of diverging side walls, the inner end of said side walls having means thereon for engaging type, type in said holder normally free to slide therein but adapted to be gripped by the engaging means.

The combination with a support of a type holding member and a plurality of type having grooves in their sides, said type holding member being substantially U- shaped and having type engaging means thereon, and means passing through said member beneath said type for holding said members in position on said support.

A type holderhaving a type receiving groove therein, type in said groove, said holder having an overhanging notch therein, said notch being arranged beneath the type, a rod-like holding member adapted to have relative longitudinal movement with respect to the typeholder to engage the shoulder provided by the notch, and means for tightening said holding member.
10. The combination of a type holding member and a plurality of type having grooves in their sides, said type holding member being made of sheet metal bent into a substantially U-shape and having inwardly directed flanges at its type engaging end, and means arranged beneath said type for holding said member in position, said means comprising a rod occupying an L-shaped notch leading from the bottom of the holder and forming a shoulder.
11. A type holder comprising a U-shaped member having a type receiving groove therein and having a notch intersecting the base of the U and extending some distance along the sides thereof, the end of said notch being laterally deflected to rovide a shoulder extending in a direction of the type receiving groove, and means on said holder for engaging type.
12. The combination of a rotary printing member, a type holder secured thereon,
said type holder comprising a U-shaped member having a type receiving groove therein and having a notch intersecting the base of the U and extending some distance along the sides thereof, the end of said notch being laterally deflected to provide a shoulder extending in the direction of the type receiving groove, and a fastening member having its ends secured to the drum for securing said type holder on the drum.
13. The combination of a rotary printing bed, adjustable means thereon including a rod for securing a printing member thereto, and a printing slug secured on said bed, said slug having an L-shaped slot therein arranged adjacent one edge thereof and adapted to fit over said rod.
14-. The combination of a printing bed, a printing member thereon, said prlnting member having an L-shaped slot therein, and means on said printing bed for engaging one portion of the L to hold the printing member in position.
15. A printing slug having an L-shaped slot therein, leading upwardly from its base and then passing lengthwise of the slug.
16. A printing slug having an open ended slot leading upwardly from the base of the slug, the closed end of the slot being disposed at one side of the open end.
17. A type holding member in the form of a U-shaped trough provided with means for engaging type, the sides of said trough having L-shaped slots through them, one leg of the L being substantially at right angles to the base and the other leg being substantially parallel with the base.
