HENRY F. ROOKEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PRINTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,929, dated February 24, 1891.
Application filed March 5, 1890. Serial No. 342,745. (No modul.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. ROOKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in that class of printing devices which consists of movable types having a rubber or other similarly-elastic base and a holder, as a handstamp,in which the types are mounted.
The object of myimprovement is to provide in a type having an elastic base with beveled ends means whereby one end of the type may be readily distinguished from the other by the sense of touch.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the type in position in a hand-stamp, one of the types having been removed. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the stamp and type. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of one of the types.
The base cof the type consists of a rectangular plate of rubber or like elastic material, to which the type proper I), of like material, is secured or preferably formed integral with. The ends of plate ce are beveled from the top downward and outward, thus makin g he plate longer on its under side.
For the purpose of distinguishing readily one end of the type from the other as a guide in setting the type the lower ends of al1 the type-bases are beveled at a sharper angle than the other. Y
The face of the type-holder c is formed with projecting undercut edges al e, which are inclined, respectively, to correspond with the ends of the type-bases.
The body of the type-holder c is made, preferably, of wood and the .inclined edges d e, of metal, secured to the sides of the body. The width of the space between the edges d and e is made slightly less than 'the length of the type-base a, sothat when the type is in place in the holder itis slightly bent in the direction of its length, the convex side being upward. The bearing-face f of the holder is made convex, so as to correspond to the bases of thetype when bent.
In mounting the type in t-he holder one end is set against one of the inclined edges ol e, and the type is then bent in the direction of its length until it will pass between the edges CZ e, where it is firmly held under the inclined edges and against the convex surface of the holder by the tendency of the type to straighten. By this construction the types are held in such a manner that any one. ot' a series maybe taken out, as in changing dates, without disturbing the rest.
In printing with this device the impression is made by a rocking motion of the stamp, bringing but a small portion of the types in contact with the surface at one time, thus permitting a clear impression from large type.
I am aware that type-holders having a dovetail grooved face and rubber types having on their backs a dovetail rib have before been used, and I do not claim such a construction.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacture, a type having an elastic base whose ends areIbeV eled from the top downward and outward, one of said ends being beveled at a more acute angle than the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY F. ROCKEY.
