. UNITED STATES 1,501,789 PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J. LINDELL, or MANDEVILLE, LO ISIANA, AssrGNoR TO U. SIDNEY FREDERICK, or COVINGTON, LOUISIANA.
BOILER ATTACHMENT.
Application filed January 6, 1922. Serial No. 527,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. LINDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mandeville, inthe parish of St. Tammany and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boiler Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in protecting devices for boilers.
An object of the invention is to provide an 'eflicient and simple device in the form of a sectional covering which is adapted to surround the circumferential seams of boilers tor shielding and protecting rivets and also to be used in the capacity of providing a cover for fire cracks.
Another object is tov provide a device which can be readily applied to a boiler and embodying novel features of construction whereby any partthereot can be easily repaired or replaced whenever desired. v
" Another objectis' to'provi'de a strong and durable device which can be manufactured at a very low cost.
lVith the above and other objectsin View, the invention consists in certain nov'el features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a side view of a boiler and showing the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a transverse fragmentary sectional view of the invention applied.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional View of one of the sections applied.
Figure 5 is a detail view of one of the U- shaped link members.
Figure 6 is a detail view of one of the bolts designed for securing the device at its ends to the boiler.
Figure 7 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the device.
Figure 8 is a sectional view through one of the bricks.
Figure 9 is a detail view of one of the tongue members.
Figure 10 is a sectional view showing the relation of the tongues with relation to the plate.
Figure 11 is a perspective view of one of the rectangular plates.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews, the numeral 10 designates a boiler having a circumferentialseam 11 which is provided with a plurality of rivets 12.
The invention comprises a series of longitudinally curved substantially rectangular plates 13 which have longitudinally arranged parallel fianges lextending at ri ht angles from opposite edges thereof. %he flanges 14 engage the boiler upon opposite sides of the seam and are provided with spaced aligned openings 15 which receive-the parallel arms of a plurality ot U-'shaped links 16. A plurality of plates 17 engage the outer sides ofthe flanges and are provided with spaced openings which receive the arm links16 and a plurality of cotter. pins 18 extend through openings formed adjacent the ends of the arms of the links and engagethe outer sidesoftheplates 17 o retain the links in position.
A pair of L-shaped. plates 19 are provided at their inner ends with lateral flanges 20 which are removably secured to' diametrically opposite sides of the boiler and upon opposite sides of the searnf A pair of bolts 21 extend through openin s. 22 in the plates and are provided at their inner ends with inclined arms 23 having ofi set extremities 24'. A pair of relatively short arms 25 are 'pivotally secured to the inclined arms 23 and each ofthese arms are provided with an apertured rounded extremity one of which is indicated by the numeral 26.
The plates located at the opposite ends of the series are designated for distinction by the numeral 27 and the spaced aligned openings 15 in the flanges of these plates receive the offset extremities of the arms 23 and 25. are mounted on the bolts and engage the L-shaped plates. A pair of coil springs 27 surround the bolts and exert a pressure between the washers 26 and a pair of washers 28 which are also mounted on the bolt. The washers 28 are retained in position and the tension of the springs are regulated by means of a pair of adjusting nuts 29 which engage the threaded portions 30 of the bolts.
A plurality of spaced wedge shaped members or tongues 31 are secured by any suit A pair of metallic Washers 26 v able means to the plates 14 and are adapted to engage a plurality of angular grooves 32 formed in the opposite edges of a plurality of fire bricks 33.
The fire bricks are formed from any suitable refractory material such as plastic fire clay, magnesia or the like, and are received between flanges rising from the side edges of the brick receiving member 3a which has its bottom arranged in contacting en gagement on either side of the seam as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. These members 34 are likewise formed from plastic fire clay or the like. Carried by each bolt 23 and being arranged in each L-shaped plate 19 there are the end bricks 3% which have substantially Zigzag shaped inner walls designed to receive the adjacent end bricks 33. The other bricks 33 are arranged in end to end engagement and. are held so associated through the medium of the wedge shaped tongues 31, such construction is clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
WVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily ap parent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A protecting device for a boiler seam comprising a sectional covering engaging the boiler upon opposite sides of the seam, means for removably securing the covering to the boiler and a refractory material engaging said boiler and the opposite sides of said covering as and for the purpose specified.
2. A protecting device for a boiler seam comprising a plurality of longitudinally curved plates, longitudinally curved parallel flanges extending from opposite edges of said plates and engaging said boiler upon opposite sides of said seam, means for connecting the adjacent ends of said plates, spring influenced means for removably securing said plates in position upon said boiler, a refractory material engaging said boiler and said flanges and removable means engaging said plates for retaining said refractory material in position.
3. A protecting device for a boiler seam comprising a plurality of longitudinally curved plates, longitudinally curved parallel flanges extending from said plates and engaging said boiler upon opposite sides of said seam, said flanges having a plurality of spaced aligned openings formed therein, a plurality of U-shaped links engaging said openings, means for retaining said links in position, adjustable means for securing said plates in position upon said boiler, a refractory material engaging said boiler and said flanges and removable means for retaining said refractory material in" position.
4. A protecting device for a boiler seam comprising a plurality of longitudinally curved plates, longitudinally curved parallel flanges extending from said plates and engaging said boiler upon opposite sides of said seam, means for removably connect;
ing the adjacent ends of said plates, spring influenced adjustable means for removably securing said plates in position upon said boiler, a plurality of spaced wedge shaped members secured to said plates, a plurality of fire bricks having angular grooves in the opposite edges thereof engaging said triangular shaped members and a refractory material disposed upon opposite sides of said fire bricks engaging said flanges and boiler.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SAMUEL J. LINDELL.
