ARTHUR GEIRLAUGI'I, OF SCOTTSVILLE, VIRGINIA.
APPLIANCE FOR LAND-ROLLERS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915.
Application filcd'November 5, 1914. Serial No. 870,481.
To all whom it may concern:
Be is known that I, ARTHUR GERLAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scottsville, in the county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Land-Rollers and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in appliances for land rollers and the like, and has for its primary object to provide an appliance of this character which may be readily secured in position upon the roller to provide a corrugated surface, whereby the roller will be caused to crush or pulverize the dirt over which it passes.
The invention has for another object to provide an appliance of this character which will be constructed in such manner that it may be readily applied to the roller or removed and will be extremely simple and cheap to manufacture, and may be readily fastened in adjusted position upon the roller.
The invention has for another object to provide an appliance of this character which may be formed in sections hinged together at one side of the roller and clamped together upon the opposite side of the roller to prevent movement of the sections of the appliance upon the same.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a roller with my appliance applied thereto, the cen tral portion of the roller being broken away to economize on space, Fi 2 is a side elevat on of a portion of a rol er with my appliance mounted thereon, looking at the side opposite that shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3is a transverse sectional view, on the plane of line 38 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a side elovation of the filling strip employed between the edges of the halves of the sections of my appliance.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates a. smooth roller which may be employed as a land roller, clod crusher or soil pulverizer and may be mounted upon shafts 2 in any suitable manner and prevented from moving longitudinally thereon by suitable stop collars 3 or the like, as desired.
In order to increase the efficiency of this roller 1, I have provided an appliance formed in sections 4 which may be readily applied to and secured in position upon the roller 1, each section 4 including a pair of opposed semi-circular halves 5 formed of suitable metal bent to provide transverse corrugations 6 extending around the roller 1., it being understood that the corrugations 6 of the halves 5 of each section 4 of my appliance are formed to register and the halves 5 of each section 4 are hinged together along one edge by the hinged loops 7 secured over suitable hook extensions 8 formed on the edges of said sections 5, so that the hinge loops 7 may be readily engaged thereover or removed, as desired. The opposite edges of the halves 5 of each section 4 are connected by means of clamp bolts 9 which extend through lugs 10 formed on said halves 5 and extending outwardly from the same, while clamp nuts 11 are engaged over the threaded ends of the clamp bolts 10 to draw together the halves 5 of the section 4 and clamp the same in position upon the roller 1.
In order to lill the space between the ends of the corrugations 6 of the halves 5 of each section 4 of my appliance, I have provided strips 12 formed of suitable metal and rolled and bent to form short transverse corrugations 13 to connect the ends of the corrugations 6 of the halves 5, it being understood that the strips 12 are positioned between the spaced longitudinal edges of the halves 5 and will be securely held in position and prevented from moving upon the roller 1' when the halves 5 of each section 4 are clamped upon the roller 1.
It will be understood that the hooks 8 and lugs 10 are preferably located between the corrugations 6 so as not to interfere with the operation thereoi or projeetrbeyond the.v
- same.
While I have shown and described the 7 preferred, embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the gagement upon opposite sides ofya roll'er said *members' beinghinged" together along their longitudinal 'edges andprovided with transverse corrugations,- the corrugations of oneinember registering with th'efcorrugations of the other membeiy means for drawing the 'members together and' clamping them upon the roller", and atransversely corrugated" strip removablv positioned" be;
tween ithe spacedulongitudinal.edges of said m m er.- I Y c 2 in combination with the smooth surface of a roller, a pair of semi-circular corrugated sections arranged in clamping engagement around said roller, said members a being hinged together along their longitudinal edges andprovided with transverse corrugations, the corrugations of one member registering with the corrugations of the other member, and means for drawing the members together and clamping .them upon the outer surface of the roller, and a transversely corrugated.striplinovably positioned between the spaced: longitudinal: edges of said members. 1
