UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID C. BOYD, 0F GALION, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GALION IRON WORKS AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF GALION, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CULVERT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID C. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culverts, (Case 13,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of culvert designed particularly for use as a crossing culvert or pipe, or wherever the conditions are such that a relatively shallow culvert is desirable.
A further object of the invention is an improved cast iron culvert, the two longitudinally extending parts or sections of which that are laid one upon the other to form the complete pipe, being provided with attaching ears or lugs formed with holes for the reception of bolts or similar fastening devices, if desired, the ears on one side of the culvert and on one section thereof being formed with vertically disposed positioning pins designed to be accommodated in the adjoining ears and the ears on the opposite side of the culvert and on the other section being correspondingly formed with pins adapted to be positioned within openings formed in the adjoining ears of the first named section, whereby the bolts or similar fastening devices may be omitted, while at the same time, the parts will be held together as against relative longitudinal displacement and a certain degree of contrac tion and expansion provided for, while at the same time, when the device is installed as a crossing culvert, with one section at the surface of the ground and exposed, said section may be easily lifted and removed and replaced, as for example, when it is desired to flush or otherwise clean the culvert out.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of a culvert constructed in accordance with the present in vention, parts being shown broken away, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation with one sec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion slightly raised from and in juxtaposition to the other.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals 1 and 2 designate, respectively, the sections of my improved culvert, the section 1 in the present instance being somewhat cylindrical, as shown, and disposed lowermost and the other section being flat throughout almost its entire surface, with side flanges 3 which preferably terminate in strengthening heads 4 adapted to contact with and lie upon corresponding heads 5 formed on the section 1 at the side edges thereof. Each of the sections of the culvert is formed on each of its side edges with a pair of longitudinally spaced and longitudinally elongated lugs or ears (3, the ears of one section registering with the ears of the other, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. WVhile in the present embodiment of the invention there is a pair of cars formed on each side of each section, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to this number of ears, but that other numbers may be employed. Each ear 6 is formed with a bolt hole 7, the bolt holes of the overlying ears registering with each other for the reception of the bolts 8 if it is desired to use the same. Furthermore, the ears on one side of the section 1 are formed with vertically disposed upwardly projecting pins 9 receivable in apertures 10 formed in the adjacent ears of the other section, and on the other side of the culvert, the section 2 is correspondingly formed on its ears 6 with vertically disposed downwardly projectiug pins 9 adapted to be received in corresponding apertures 10 formed in the other ears of the first named section. It will thus be seen that even though the bolts be omitted, which is a desirable thing to do under some conditions, as for example, where the culvert is used as a crossing culvert at the surface of the ground and it is desired to open the culvert from time to time, the pins 9 in the apertures 10 will permit of the ready removal of one section from the other, whereas when the parts are in position one upon the other, all liability of accidental displacement is preeluded.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the culvert is formed at one end with a bell 11 to receive the end of another culvert or pipe, but it is to be understood that this bell need not extend entirely around the end of the culvert, but be partially or entirely omitted so far as the formation of the upper or cover section 2 is concerned. And it is; also to be understood that under some conditions, the parts may be reversed from that illustrated in the accompanying drawing and the section 1 be disposed uppermost and the section 2 lowermost, as for example, when a relatively shallow culvert is desired with a substantially flat bottom and disposed underneath the surface of the ground.
WVhile theaccompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in i the construction, arrangement and proportlons of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A culvert comprising sections adapted to rest one upon the other to form a horizontally and longitudinally divided pipe, both sections being formed at their sides with overlapping ears, the ears of one section being formed with pins and the ears of the other section being formed with apertures in which said pins are loosely mounted, whereby one section may be raised directly from the other without the necessity of removing any fastening devices.
2. A culvert comprising sections adapted to rest one upon the other to form a horizontally and longitudinally divided pipe, both sections being formed on their side edges with laterally disposed longitudinally spaced and longitudinally elongated ears, the ears of one section registering with and overlapping the ears of the other section, the ears on one side of one section being formed with vertically disposed pins and the adjoining ears being formed with openings in which said pins are loosely mounted and the other section being formed on the opposite side of the pipe in its ears with vertically disposed pins, while the adjoining-ears are formed with openings in which said last named pins are loosely mounted.
8. A culvert comprising sections adapted to rest one upon the other to form a horizontally and longitudinally divided pipe, both sections being formed on their side edges with laterally disposed longitudinally spaced and longitudinally elongated ears, the ears of one section registering with and overlapping the ears of the other section, the ears on one side of one section being formed with vertically disposed pins and the adjoining ears being formed with openings in which said pins are loosely mounted and the other section being formed on the opposite side of the pipe in its ears with vertically disposed pins,'while the adjoining ears are formed with openings in which said last named pins are loosely mounted, all of the ears being formed with bolt holes, said bolt holes of adjoining ears registering with each other, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 7 in presence of two witnesses,
DAVID C. BOYD.
