To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR Barns and Josnrn GoULnBoUcN, subjects of the King of England, residing at Leicester, Leicestershire, England, have invented certain Improvements in Presses, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for operating on sheet material and more particularly to presses of the class used in cutting sheet material by the employment oi freely movable dies, a typical example of which is disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 921,503, granted May 11, 1909, on application of Arthur Bates. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is applicable to classes of machines other than that illustrated in said patent.
Characterist-ically, machines of the type referred to in the foregoin statement have been provided with a single revolution clutch mechanism, thus eliminating the possibility of injury to the work or to the operator through an unexpected repetition of the pressure applying operation. However, in operating upon certain classes of materials notably tough or thick leathers or other fabrics, it is frequently necessary to employ a plurality elf-pressure applying operations, preferably in rapid succession, in order to secure clean cutting of the material.
In view of the above, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved press which will retain all the numerous advantages of the commercial form of machines as constructed and arranged that the extent of movement of a manually'operable starting levertletermines whether one or more than one pressure applying operation is to take place.
In the illustrative machine, means is provided under the control of the ope 'ator for determining the extent of movement of the starting lever in accordance with the decision of the operator as to the number of pressure applying operations to be performed by the machine at a given time. Conveniently the means described comprises a plunger mounted in the handle oi the starting lever and readily operable by a finger of the hand which grasps the handle.
In another aspect the invention comprises a machine wherein the clutch mechanism may be so operated as to providefor a plurality of pressure applying operations upon a single unsustained actuation of the starting means, and in which there is provision for preventing that operation of the brake which normally occurs at the end of one revolution of the shaft when a plurality of revolutions is to take place, means being preferably provided for applying the brake to the shaft at the end of a predetermined plurality of revolutions of the shaft.
From this viewpoint the invention comprises means for connecting a shaft with the source of power and means for preventing the application of the brake at the end oi a single revolution of the shaft when the power has been connected for a predetermined plurality of revolutions of the shaft by a single unsustained actuation of the starting means. In the preferred construction means-is provided under the control of the operator for preventing the application of the brake under certain conditions and there is provided also other means for automatically applying the brake at the time the power means is disconnected from the shaft at the end of a predetermined number (it revolutions of the latter. Conveniently the clutch controlling means whichu'ould uormally operate to disconnect the clutch at the end of a single revolution of the shatt is locked in inoperative position by means under the control of the operator, and in order that the number of revolutions may be predetermined, means is provided for automatically withdrawing the locking means so that the clutch controlling means laccomes operative to disconnect the clutch from the shaft at the proper time.
Other features of the construction and other combii'iations of parts will be described in the following detailed description and pointed out in the claims.

In the illustrative machine there is shown a work supporting bed 4 supported on the frame 6 of the machine and designed for cooperation with a presser member 8 carried by a post 10 for swinging movement over the bed so that the presser member may operate upon work in whatever position it may be placed upon the bet. It Will understood, therefore, that the post 10 1s rotatably mounted in its bearings 12 and 14 so that the presser member 8 may be oscillated in the manner described. in addition, the post 10 is also mounted for reciprocation in its bearings so as to provide for moving the presser member toward and from work on the bed during pressure applying operations. For reciprocating the post, connections are provided between the main shaft 16 and the post comprising an eccentric strap 18 connected by a link 20 to a block 22 screw threaded into the lower end of the post, a ball bearing 24 being provided between the block 22 and a shoul er on the link 20 so that the post may be. turned with a minimum of friction. Connected to the eccentric strap 18 by means of a pivot pin 26 is a rod 28, the lower end of which is in turn pivoted to a lever 30 mounted for rockin' movement on the pivot 32 in the frame of the machine. The free arm of the lever is connected to operate a brake which, in the illustrative construction, is a brake band 34 surrounding a brake flange 36 fixedly at tached to the shaft 16., It will be understood that as the post 10, together with the press I er arm. moves upwardly the brake band is gradually applied by the operation of the lever 30 and that the bralte band is fully applied to brake the shaft when the presser member arrives at its uppermost position of rest. The machine so far described is commonly known as the clicking machineand, if desired, reference may be had to the said patent for a more complete disclosure of the construction and mode of operation of an early type of the commercial clicking ma chine.
Whereas in the clicking machine as here'- tofore constructed a single actuation of the starting mechanism results in a single revolution of the main shaft accompanied by one pressure applying operation of the presser member WdlCll descends and then returns to its position of rest, the present invention provides means under the control of the operator for causing a single pressure applying operation or a predetermined plurality of pressure applying operations at the will of the operator upon a single actuation of the starting means. In the illustrative construction the clutch mechanism for connecting the power pulley 38 to the shaft 16 comprises a wedge member 40 (Figs. 2 and 5) pivoted on a stub shaft 42 and having a wedge or cam end portion 44 designed to control a bolt or plunger 46 in such a way that upon withdrawal of the wedge 44, the plunger 46 is actuated by a spring 47 (l ig, 5) to connect the power pulley to the shaft, the said wedge portion 44 operating to move the bolt or plunger 46 in the opposite direction normally at the end of a single revolution of the pulley, thus unclutching the pulley from the shaft. As shown, the plunger 46 is connected by an arm 49 to turn the screw 51 to effect an expansion or contraction of the ring 53 carried by the stationary clutch member 55, the ring upon expansion engaging the flange 57 of the loose pulley 38. For a more complete disclosure of the clutch mechanism, reference should be had to Patent No. 1,011,903, granted December 19, 1911 upon an application filed by Arthur Bates. As shown the wedge member 40 is operated to withdraw the cam or wedge portion 44 from operative position by means of a hand lever 146 (Fig. 1) mounted at 48 on the frame of the machine and connected to the wedge member 40 by means which provides for the release of the wedge member so that it may drop back into operative position to unclutch the power pulley atthe end ofa single revolution of the latter. These connections comprise a rod I pivoted at 52 to the rear end of the lever 146 and at its lower end to a link 54 which turns freely about a stub sha t 42 and carries a latch plate 56 normally engaged under another latch plate 58 at the upper end of a latch member 60 pivoted at 62 on the wedge member 40, a spring 64 being provided to hold the two latch plates 56 and 58 yieldingly in engagement with each other. The construction and arrangement such that when the starting lever is depressed its full distance to permit the lock member 72 to operate and lock the wedge member 40 in inoperative position the plates 102 also operate to release the hook and thus free the ends oi. the brake band for movement relatively to each other. Hence, although the lever 30 is operated as usual, it fails to effect a braking action, movement of the brake lever under these conditions serving simply to separate the ends of the brake band. For the purpose of roturn the ends of the brake band to engagi g relation to each other and in such. a position that the hook may again engage the recess and. shoulder 100 in the plate 90 there is provided spring means tending always to keep the ends of the brake band together and to return them after any separation. \Vhilc several diii erent constructions oi? spring means may be used, that preferred comprises a bolt 10% threaded into plate 92 and extending loosely through an opening in plate 90 and upon which there is positioned a spring 1.06 confinedbetween a surface on the plate 90 and a nutand washer 108 on the free end of the bolt 10 1. The tension 01 this spring can be so adjusted that it serves to return the ends of the brake band into contact with each other so that the hook 98 may engage as above described to lock the two ends of the bi e banzl in such cng ojement that the band is to all intents and puiposcs a single bl-11:6 member. In order that the operator of the machine may be enabled to depress the starting lever M6 the desired distance to cause one revolution of the shaft and thus a single pressure applying operation or alternatively to cause a plurality of revolutions of the shaft and more than one operation of the presser menu her, there is provided means for controlling the movement of the handle 66 as to the QXT tent or" its movement whereby the operator 1s able to perform the operations above de scribed with certainty and dispatch. In the illustrative construction, the means for controlling the movement of the handle 66 com prises a manually operable latch member 110 (Fig. pivotally mounted at 112 in-the upper end ofthe handle 66 and'designed to engage the upper end of a guide red 1141, fixedly carried by the presser member 8, to limit the downward movement of the handle on the guide rod when only one revolution of the main shaft is desired. When a plurality of pressure applying operations is desired, the latch member 110 is arranged to pass into a recess 116 m the upper end of the guide 1141 and thus olier no obstruction to the downward movement of the handle 66 on its guide rod 1141. Hence it the operator wishes a plurality of 3-16SS111G applying operations he grasps the handle 66 and depresses it as tar as it will go. H but one pressure applying operation is desired he presses with his linger or thumb upon the end of a plunger 118 which is movable downwardly into the handle against the resistance of a light spring 120 which operates to return the plunger to its upperposition of rest. Carried by the plunger 118 is a pin 122 arranged to pass through a slot- 124 in the upper end of the latch member 110, the long axis of the slot being at an acute angle to the long axis of the latch member 116. Hence, if the plunger 118 be depressed the latch member 110 will be swung on its pivot 112 and its lower end will be engaged with the upper end of the guide 11d, thus limiting the downward movement of the handle 66 on its guide rod 11d. As shown the plunger 118 is provided with slots 126 on opposite sides which are open ended and permit the plunger 118 to move downwardly, although the pin 112 which supports the latch member 110 passes entirely across the chamber which receives the plunger.

10. In amachine of the class described, a work supporting bed, a presser member, power means comprising a shaft for moving the presser member toward and from the bed in pressure applying operations, a
" power pulley rotatable on the shaft, means associated with the shaft and the pulley and under the control of the operator for conneeting the shaft to the power pulley for one or more pressure applying operations, a braking means normally operative to brake the shaft at the end of a single revolution of the latter, and means automatically operative to prevent the action of the braking means at the end of one revolution when the machine is to continue through two revolutions of the shaft.
11. In a machine of the class described, a work supporting bed, a presser member, power means comprising a shaft for moving the presser member toward and from the work supporting bed in pressure applying operations, a power pulley on the shaft, means under the control of the operator for connecting the pulley to the shaft, a braking means normally operative to stop the rotation of the shaft at the end of a single revolution of the latter, and means asso ciated with the means for connecting the pulley to the shaft for controlling the operation of said braking means so that the latter will not be operative until the end of the second revolution of the shaft when two pressure applying operations of the presser member are to take place at the will of the operator.
12. In a machine of the class described, a work supporting bed, a presser member, power means for moving the presser member toward and from the work supporting bed, manually operable means for controlling said power means and movable to initiateone or a plurality of pressure applying operations, and means under the control of the operator for determining the extent of movement of the manually operable means so that the number of pressure applying operations of the pressure member may. be predetermined at the will of the operator.

In a machine of the class described, a work supporting bed, a presser member, power means comprising a shaft for moving the presser member toward and from the work supporting bed in pressure applying operations, a clutch on the shaft for connecting the latter to the source of power, manually operable means comprising a lever for initiating operation of the machine and for selectively determining the number of pressure applying operations upon a single unsustained actuation of the manually operable means, and means for controlling the lever and thu. assisting the operator in selectively determining the number of pressure applying opera tions.

In a machine of the class described, a shaft, a circular member fixedly secured to the shaft, a brake band arranged to embrace the circular member, the said brake band being divided and provided intermediate of its ends with a latch for releasably connecting the divided portions, and manually operable means for controlling the latch.
41. In a machine of the class describe-.1, a shaft, a brake for the shaft, power means for operating the brake, means under the control of the operator for rendering the brake inoperable, and automatic means for restoring the brake to operative condition.
In a machine of the class described, a shaft, a brake for the shaft, power means for applying and releasing the brake in normal operations of the machine, and manually operated means for rendering the brake inoperable by said power means.
