Be it known that l, dnssn lW'EN'lXVUH'lH, a citizen of the United Fit-ates, residing; at Norwood in the county oi l lamilton and i itate of Ohio, have invented. certain limprovements in tltarting; and Stopping Mechanisms, of which the following description, in connection. with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, liliye reference characters on the drawin indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to starting and stopping mechanisnms this application bein a division oil my co-pendingy application. tor Letters Patent for improvements in assemhling machines Serial No. 827,596, tiled on March 27, 191%, which issued as Patent No. l,336,875 upon April 13, 1920.
The invention provides a novel construe-- tion of starting and stopping mechanism adapted for use not only in shoe making machines of the class described in said copending application but also of general utility in machines of various kinds where the use of mechanism of this general class may be found desirable.
An important feature of the invention. consists in means of novel and improved construction whereby the operator is enabled to cause the machine to be started at will and whereby the machine is stopped at the end of a definite cycle irrespective of the action of? the operator, the illustrative enibodiment of the invention including a simple and improved construction of mechanism designed to facilitate return oi the parts into their initial relation to one another in readiness for a subsequent starting operation.

The illustrative construction comprises a clutch. includi e; a driving' member shown as a belt pulley mounted loosely upon a shatt t upon which is secured a driven member comprisinn' trams 6. The shaft 4: may be connected, as by means ot gearinp; 8, to any mechanism which is to be operated.
The pulley E2 is'provided with a. plurality ott apertures '10 arranged in a circular series, and in the tran'ie 6 is slidably mounted a catch 12 in the term of a pin which is arranged to enter in one or another of the ainzrtures l0 and thus operatively connect the frame 6 to the pulley. A spring 14: bearing}; apainst a trunnion block 16 on the pin to ds to move the pin toward the pulley to cause it to enter one of the apertureslO. Pivoted on the frame 6 is an arm 18 which has an opening wherein it embraces the trunnion block 16 and is connected thereto for moving the pin 12 in a direction to disengage it trom the pulley. The arm is provided at its other end. with a laterally offset portion arranged to be engaged by a beveled surface 20 formed on. a controlling member comprising a bell crank pivoted at 974: on the frame of the machine. A. spring 26 connected to the lower arm oi. the member 5223 tends to maintain the member in. position. to locate its beveled surface 20 in the path oi rotary movement of the outer end of the arm 18 an d. thus to hold the arm normally in such position as to retract the pin 12 trom engagement with the pulley 2 and permit the pulley to turn freely on the shaft 4i. A rubber buffer secured to the member below the beveled surface 20 is arranged to engage the end oi: the arm IF; to stop the driven member in a definite position lllor operating the controlling; member 22 to trip the clutch the machine provided with a treadle 30 connected by link 32 to a bell. cranlr an upwardly projecting arm of which is slotted to receive a, pin 36 pro jectinp; laterally from a slide mounted for movement back and forth in hearings in the trance it spring l0 connected to the hell .onedirection and to f crank 34 tends to position the parts as indicat-ed in Fig. 1. In order to render the slide 38 effective to operate the controlling member 22 there is mounted upon the lower arm of this member an abutn'ient l2 com prising a pivoted pawl the outer end of which is arranged to rest normally on a ledge id on the member 22 with the pawl inclined with respect to the path of movement of the slide 38. A spring 46 connected to the pawl 42 tends to hold it against the led 'e The pin 36 in the slide 38 is extended laterally into position to engage the upper surface of the pawl when slide is moved forwardly by the action of toe treadle. The pawl, bearing against the ledge 44;, thus serves as an abutment to render the slide effective for swinging the member 2 into position to release the arm 18 and perm t the pin 12 to be forced by the spring 14. into clutching engagement with the pulle 2.
In order to cause the driven member to be stopped at the end 01 a single revolution the parts are so constructed that the slide 38 in its treadle operated movement carries the pin 36 beyond the pawl 12 and thus causes the controlling member 22 to be released to the action of the spring: which immediatel' returns the member to its initial position as determined by a fixed pin -48 which engages the ledge 4:4. The beveled surface 20 is thus relocated in position to er the arm 18 and withdr w the pin 12 from pulley 2 at the end oi one revolution and the buffer 28 is positioned to serve as a positive stop for the driven member. When the operator releases the treadle 30 the spring; 40 serves to return the slide 38 also to its initial position the pin 36 during this movement engaging the opposite side of the pawl 4-2 which yields upwardly against the tension of its spring 46 to permit the pin to pass by.
It will be seen from the above (ilcscription that the pawl 42 thus acts as one form of a switch cam by means of which mot on the slide 38 is communicated to the controlling member 22. An v other suitable form of switch cam may be substituted tor the pawl and still be within the scope of the invention as defined in certain of the appended claims.
Havinp; described the invention, .rhat l claim as new desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In mechanism of the class described. the combination with a clutch, of .means tor actuating said clutch comprising a clutch controlling member, a switch cam mounted on said member, an operator-eontrolled slide. and means on said slide arranged to engage the switch cam to operate the controlling member upon mov ment oi the slide in sen-gage the itch 6am and. permit the controlling member to return to original position upon continued movement of the slide in the same direction. said slide being also arranged to engage another portion of the switch 'am upon movement of the slide in the opposite direction to its original position.

6. In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a driving member and a driven member, of a catch carried by the driven member and arranged to afford an operative connection between said members, an arm pivoted on the driven member for operating said. catch, a controlling member movable into or out of position to release said arm, and an operating member for imparting releasing movement to said controlling member, the controlling member having a part arranged to provide an abutment against which said operating member acts in one direction and pivotally mounted to yield against pressure of the operating member in the reverse direction.
7. In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a clutch, of means for actuating said clutch comprising a control ling member mounted for clutch tripping movement, operator-controlled means movable to operate said controlling member, and an abutment pivotally mounted on said member in the path of movement of said operator-controlled means to render said means effective to operate the member, said operator-controlled means being constructed and arranged to operate the controlling member through said abutment and in its continued movement to disengage the abutment and release the member, and the abutment being arranged to swing about its pivot in response to pressure of said operator-controlled means in its reverse movement to permit said means to return to start ing position.
8. ln mechanism of the class described, the combination with a clutch, of means for actuating said clutch comprising a pivoted bell-crank, an operator-controlled slide, a pawl pivoted on said bell-crank, means for maintaining said pawl normally in'inclined relation to the direction of movement of said slide and in position to serve as an abntment for transmitting movement to the bellcrank, and means on said Slide arranged to engage the pawl to operate the bell-crank upon a movement of the slide in one direction and in the continued movement of the slide to pass by the pawl and release the bell-crank, said pawl being yieldable in response to the pressure of said engaging means upon a movement of the slide in the reverse direction to permit the parts to return to starting position.
