TREADLE-CONTRL MECHANISM.
maarre.
T o 7l whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. GRANDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in and l do hereby declare the following-to be a full,` clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art `to which it Aappertains to make and use the machines of this tvpe that unauthorized persons in passing the machine depress the treadle and start the machine. This momentary depression of the treadle may work serious injury in machines of the type referred to, as the machine after once being .started completes the predetermined cvcle of operations whether or not the pressure upon the treadle is continued or relieved. ltis the object of the present'invention to provide a simple and compactI mechanism for preventing the operation of the treadle bv unauthorized persons and to this end a feature of the present invention contemplates the provision of a locking pin slidinglv received in a stationary supper-t located at one side of the treadle arm and a pivoted lever connected to the pin and adapted upon actuation to project thn end of the pin beneath the treadle arm and retain the treadle in an elevated position.
This mechanism is particularly intended for use in connection with sole molding machines ot the tvpe disclosed in the patent to Preble. No. 1,0011076. Sept. 26, 1911` and as constructed is capable of embodiment in these machines without any change or modification of the machines themselves.
Still further features of the invention consist in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of Speccatien of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 1,` 1918. Serial No. 225,975.
nected with a rock shaft 14 through an.
The collar 20 carries a roll 22 which is engaged by one end of a lever 23 pivoted on a hub 24 and having a cam 25 formed upon the opposite end which engages between the ends of a clutch band 2G to expand the band against a drive pulley 27. thus locking the pulley to the shaft 21. lVhen the roll 22 is moved from under the end of the lever .23 the cam shaped end is moved into an inoperative position bv a' spring 28. The clutch hand is connected to the hrb 2t by a block 29v bolted to the band and received in a slot formed in the hub. Immediately upon starting the drive shaft an arm 30 is moved into engagement with a lug 31 projecting upwardly from the Itreadle arm to hold the treadle in a depressed position until the machine has completed its cvcle of operations. lwhen the arm is remofed to permit elevation of the treadle by a spring 32.
lt will be obvious that with this construe tion a momentary depression of the treadle will serve to start the mechanism into operation and that thereafter this operation will be continued independently or wheher or not the treadle is subsequently released. It is possible, then` for the machine to be seriously iniured if an unauthorized person in passino; the machine carelessly steps on the treadle and to prevent this occurrence means are provided for locking the treadle in elevated position when it is not desired that the machine should be used. This mechanism is conveniently adapted to existing types of machines and to this end a stationary support or arm. 35 is provided with asplit hub, indicated at 36, which is adapted to be clamped over a brace rod 37 connecting opposite sides of the frame in this machine. This support is located at one side of the treadle arm and slidingly receives a pin 38 which is adapted at one end to project beneath 'the treadle arm 10. The opposite end of the locking pin 38 isconnected to an actuating lever 40 pivoted centrally upon a lug 42 projecting from the support 35 and having a forked lower end which embraces a stud 43 secured in the locking pin 38. Vtith this construction a simple manipulation of the upper end of the actuating lever, which is conveniently ac cessible to the foot of the operator, moves the end ci the locking pin either into or out of the path' of movement of the treadle arm, as desired. The operative or inoperative positions of the locking pin are determined by a Spring pressed detent 45 located in the support 35 and engaging with one of a. pair of recesses 46 formed in the pin 33. This mechanism forms a simple and compact construction which in its normal position does not interfere With the free operation of the treadle but which may be actuated when so desired to positively prevent any dcpression of the treadle When the machine is not in use.
While it is preferred to employ the speciic construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement not essential except so far as speciied in the claims, and may be changed or modified Without departing from the broader features of the invention.
The invention having been described, What is claimed is:
l. A treadle control mechanism compris ing a pivoted treadle arm, a support located at one side of the path of movement of the arm, a locking pin slidingly received in the support and adapted in one position to project beneath the treadle arm When elevated and in another position to be removed from the path of movement, and an actuating lever pivoted upon the support and connected to the opposite end of the pin to move the pin into and out of the path o'f movement of the treadle arm.
2. A treadle control mechanism comprising a pivoted'treadle arm, a transverse brace rod, a stationary supporting arm having la split hub clamped upon the rod, a locking pin received in the supporting arni and normally located at one side ot' the path oil movement of the treadle arm, and lan actuating lever pivoted upon the supporting arm and connected at, one end to the pin to project tlie opposite end of the pin beneath the treadle arm when in elevated position.
3. A treadle control mechanism comprising a pivoted treadle arm, a driving clutch, connections between the treadle arm and clutch for engaging the clutch when the arm is depressed, means for locking the treadle arm in depressed position after the clutch is engaged, a locking pin supported at one side of the treadle arm in a normally inoperative position, and means for projecting the end of the locking pin beneath the treadle arm to lock the latter in elevated position and prevent starting of theV machine.l
