FRED SLATER, OF EAS'ION, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO INGERSOLL-RAND GOM- PANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
DOUBLE-DRUM I-IOIST.
Application fi1edJu1y'3l, 1925. Sea; Nd. 47,269.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRED M. SLATER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Easton, in. the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented of one drum or the other, to be automatical-v ly controlled by the hand operated reversing device which controls the starting, stopping and direction of rotation of the motor, and to 'eflfect this automatic control in a cheap and simple manner, without complication of parts.
F urther objects of the invention Wlll hereinafter appear and the invention con sists of the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of.
parts hereinafter more fully described. in this specification, and defined, in the 'appended claims, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings,v in which Figure 1 is an elevation partly in longitudinal section .of somuch of a hoist as will serve to illustrate the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional .view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, and
, Figure 3 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional view taken through the throttle valve on the line33 of Figure-1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the .main
frame A is provided with side frames B and C to one of which, as for instance, the
' side frame B may be connected any suitable motor D, as for instance, a fluid actuated motor, or an electric motor, or a motor of some other type. In a double drum hoist, like that indicated in the drawings, the motor D is preferably reversible and is controlled by a suitable hand operated device, which in the case of a fluid actuated motor, may be a throttle lever E connected to a reversing valve F shown in detail in Figure 3. I
The motor is connected in any .suitable 1 manner (not shown) to operate a drum shaft G and two drums H and J are rotatably mounted relatively to the drum shaft" G. In this instance, the 'drum shaft G is provided with a sleeve K suitably keyed thereto as by means of the key L so that the shaft and sleeve rotate together. The drum H, as shown, rotates upon the sleeve. K while the drum J rotates upon the main portion of the shaft G. Suitably keyed to the sleeve K between the drums Hand J as by means of the key L but slidable longitudinally upon said sleeve K isa main driver O preferably in the form of a head or disk, having clutch teeth P,
The drums H and J are provided "Wltll drum drivers in the form of clutch jaws-Q,
and R with which the clutch teeth P on the main driver 0 cooperate in the operation of the device. By moving the main driver "0 into engagement with one orlthe other of the drum drivers Q and B one drum or the other is connected to be driven by the drum shaft in accordance with the direction of rotation of the motor D.
In accordance with this invention, means are provided controlled by the fmanipula- 6 mounted on the frame A having the pis-' ton T controlled by pressure fluid, as for instance, compressed air supplied to the inlet supply opening U of the valve chest V- and controlled by the valve F. Suitable operative connections are provided between the controlling piston 1 and the main driver 0 so that reciprocation of the p187. ton in the cylinder S moves the main driver into engagement with one drum or the other. I
In this instance, the valve F in the valve chest V is provided With a rack WV engaging a segment X operated by the lever E and springs Y and Z are provided in the Valve chest at each end of the valve to automatically return the valve to neutral pow and the exhaust from the motor passes to Lil atmosphere from the valve chamber, 6. Pressure fluid also passes through the ports 0 in the valve and the passage (3 through the motor casing, and frame of the machine to the cylinder S to force the piston T for wardly and move the main driver O into engagement with the drum .l as shown in Figure 1. The reverse movement of the valve F will open the passage (Z to atmosphere through the valve chest chamber 6 and admit pressure fluid through the valve openings e andthe passage f to the opposite side of the piston T in the cylinder S in which case the piston will be retracted and the drum H will he engaged with the main driver Ow Any suitable means may be provided for connecting the piston T to the main driver and in this instance the piston rod 9 is pivotally connected to an arm 71, which is fast to a vetrical rodjj carried in the bracket is and provided at its upper end with a yoke 0 secured rigidly thereto as by means of the set screw 29 so that the yoke turns or rocks as the rodj is rotated about its longitudinal axis. The yoke 0 carrier pins Q engaging a. groove 1 in the main drie r O'so that the main driver is free to rotate with the drum shaft. V
In the operation of the device, let it be assumed 't-hatthe reversing valve F for the motor has beenmoved to the position as in dicated in Figure 3 in which case, as described, pressure fluid will be admittedto drive the motor in one direction and the fluid will also be admitted'through the passage (Z behind the piston T so that the piston will have been moved torwardin its cylinder and the vertical rod willihave been rotated about its longitudinal axis to rock the yoke 0 and carry the main driver into engagement with the drum J. The drum J will then be rotated by the motor and will become the haulage drum while the drum H is loose on the drum shat inFigure 3, to reversethe motor, the coin t and becomes the tail rope drums By throwing the throttle lever E to theopposite position from that indicated tion otadrum shaft, two drums rotatable" relatively thereto, a reversible motor op eratively connected to drivesaid shaft, a mam: driver rotated by the drum shaft and slidable into engagementwith one drum 8i the other, a hand operated controlling device for he motor, and means controlledby said hand operated controlling device-for automatically actuating said main 'ClllVGP into engagement withone drunr ortheother in accordance with the direction-ofrotation of the motor.
2. In a double drum ho1st,the-comb1nation of a drum shaft, two drums rotatable relatively thereto, a reversible fluid actu= ated. motor-operatively connected to drive said shaft, a main driver-"rotated by the drum shaft and slidab-le into engagement with. one drum or the other, a hand op erat-ed controlling device fortlre motor, and fluid actuated means controlled by said hand operated. controlling device for automatically actuating said main driver into-ens gagenient with one drum orythe other in accordance with. the dlrection; of rotation of'the motor.
3. Ina double drum hoist, the combination of a druinshaft, two drums rotatable relatively thereto, a reversible fluid actuated motor operatively connected to drive said shaft, a main driver, located between the drums and rotated by therdrum shaft, dr .111 drivers earned. by the drums, fluid actuated means for causing theinain driver to-engage one or, the-other ofthe-drum drivers,"
a reversing throttle forthe motor," and con-* nections controlled by said throttle for automatieally controlling, the fluidactuated means in accordancewith the direction of rotation of the motor.
In testimony whereof-I have signed this specification.
FRED M: SLATER.
