The objects of Vthe invention are to einploy fluid actuated means tor automatically connecting one or the other ofthe drums with a common source of power to he rotated in accordance with the direction ot rotation ot the power element, and to construct a rug ged, compact and etlicient hoist in which either or" the'drums and their associated elements may he readily assembled and disas`I semloled without disturbing the. assembly of the other druln. Separate fluid actuated means are provided for moving the main -iver into engagement with one or the other of the opposed drivers carried by the drums. To this end a cylinder t is formed integrally with the cover plate V and is preferably located coaxially with the main shaft J. rEhe cylinder f has a cover plate u and is provided with a reciprccatory piston n. A' piston rod w, removably secur d to the piston u in any suitable manner, extends through one end of the main shaft J and is connected at one end with a cross head fr arranged slidaloly in the main shaft J and which supports an antiefriction bearing jz/ for the piston rod w. The piston rod w is preferably held to the bearing g/ by means of a screw e extending through said bearing and forming a trunnion for the inner member of said bearing. he end of the cross head a: is preferably screw threaded as at 2 to receive a correspondingly screw threaded collar or nut 3 for holding the bearing g/ Within the cross head az. The cross head x is provided with a transverse bore 4- to receive a bolt 5 which extends through slots 6 on opposite sides of the main shaft J and engages at its ends the main driver R. rThe bolt is preferably held against endwise movement by a nut 7 screwed on one end thereof. The slots 6 may be of any suitable length to permit sliding of the bolt 5 therein, but are preferably of a length to permit the head of the bolt 5 to pass over the inner faces of either drum in case it be desired to remove said bolt.
From the foregoing description is will be seen that the main driver R and the cross head a; are slidable longitudinally with re spec-t to the main shaft .l but are held against rotation with respect thereto.
The admission of pressure fluid to the cylinder t is in this instance also controlled by the throttle valve X. The throttle valve X'has a pair of ports 8 and 9 adapted to register with passages 1() and 11 respectively leading to the ends of the cylinder t. An exhaust port 12 is suitably located to provide communication between the atmosphere and a groove 1I?)V formed on the valve. The groove 13 is so formed on. the valve that when said valve is rotated from one limiting position to the other, said groove will register with one or the other of the passages and 11 and with the exhaust passage 12 for the purpose of exhausting pressure fluid from the cylinder ends. As before. stated, the valve X also controls the admission of pressure fluid to the motor, and the ports leading to the ino-- tor as well as the ports 8 and 9 are so arged with respect to each other that suie fluid is simultaneously supplied to the motor and to one or the other of the cylinder ends depending upon the direction of rotation of the valve X.
Braking means are provided for holding the drums against rotation after the main driver has been disconnected from the drum drivers. To this end a flange 14: is formed on adjacent faces of each drum to receive brake bands 15 which partly encircle the flanges 14. The bands 15 may be manipulated by any suitable means such as for instance a lever 16, but since such brakes are usually provided in hoists of this type and inasmuch as their functioning and operation are well known, further description thereof is considered unnecessary.
1n the operation ofthe hoist, assuming that it be desired to rotate the haulage drum L in a clockwise direction, the throttle valve X may be rotated to place the port 8 of thevalve in registration with the port 1 0 to admit pressure fluid into the front end of the cylinder t. In this way, the main driver R will be moved into engagement with the drum drivers P and thus hold the drum stationary with respect to the main shaft J and cause said drum to rotate therewith. IUpon reversal of the throttle valve X, pressure fluid from the front end of the cylinder twill pass through the port 10 and groove 13 to the atmosphere through the exhaust port 12. Continued rotation of the valve X in the described direction will place the port 9 in registration with the passage 11 for admitting pressure Huid to the rear end of the cylinder t for moving the main driver R into engagement with the drum driver Q carried by the drum 0. Reversal of the valve X will also cause reversal of the motor sorthat the drum O will rotate in a counter-clockwise. direction.
l claim:
1. 1n a double drum hoist, the combination of a base plate having an upwardly eX- tending semi-circular frame, a top semi-v circularI frame secured thereto, both frames having meeting flanges at their outer ends, openings in the sides of said frames' for haulage and tail ropes, a hollow drum shaft extending longitudinally through said frames, a pair of drums rotatable in the frames relatively to said shaft, side plates secured to the flanges of said frames, one side plate having a gear casing, a motor secured against said gear casing belo-w the longitudinal axis of said drums, opposed drum drivers on lthe opposite inner faces of said drums, a main driver and clutch mechanism mounted on the drum shaft between the drums, and fluid actuated means located above the motor having an actuating rod extending through the hollow drum shaft, for controlling said clutch mechanism, whereby one drum 0r the other may he clutched to the drum shaft.
2. In a double drum hoist, the combination of a base plate having an upwardly extending semi-circular frame, a top semicircular' frame secured thereto, both fra-mes having meeting flanges at thein outer ends,
openings in the sides of said frames for haulage and tail ropes, a hollow drum shaft extending longitudinally through said frames, a pair of drums rotatable in the frames relatively to said shaft, side plates secured to the flanges of said frames, one side plateV having a gear casing, a motor secured against said gear casing below the longitudinalA axis of said drums, opposed drum drivers on the opposite inner faces of said dri-rms, a main driver and clutch mechanism mounted on the drum shaft between the drums, a cylinder and fiuid actuated piston mounted above the motor in line with the drum shaft, and a piston rod extending through the drum shaft and operatively connected to control said clutch mechanism, whereby one drum or the other may be clutched to the drum shaft.
