Be it known that l, CHARLES C. Hansen, a citizen'ot' the United States, and a resident of Easton, county ot Northampton, and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented a certain Double-Drum Hoist, of which the ollowing is a speciticat-ion accompanied by drawings?" I rlhis invention relates to double drum hoists of vthe type in which two drums are connectedto be driven alternately in opposite directions vby a reversible motor. Clutch mechanism is provided shit'table automatically into engagement with one drum or the other according to the direction ot' rotation of the motor.
@ne objectV of the invention is to secure a simple and durable clutch mechanism iii the form ot a jaw clutch which will oper ate automatically with certainty and precision. Another object ot the invention is to reduce the trictional losses throughout the l drum operating mechanism of the hoist and a still further object is to protect the drum mechanism iand cables hy means ot a central housing which not only prevents the cablesV vation of so much of a hoist as `will serve to illustrate the invention, taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 2 looking in the direction Vof the arrows,

Referring to the drawings any suitable reversible motor may be provided for the hoist, in this instance, a pressure fluid motor of the flat piston type being illustrated comprising the cylinder A, the front head B, the back head C, the piston D adapted to reciprocate horizontally within the rectangular piston space of the cylinder casing A, and

forces produced by the pistons impart rota' tion to the crunk F having the crank pin G connected to the inner piston li and thus rotates the motor shaft il in one direction or the other in accordance with the manipulation of the throttle valve handle J, suitably connected to operate a reversing valve li in the front head ll. For convenience ot' construction au intermediate casing L forming a part of the motor casing toi-ms a housing for the counterweight- O connected to the motor snaft il and the different parts ot the motor lseing, including the casing L, are held together by suitable bolts l. At the oppositie end ol the motor shaft li is located a gear hoi; ti supporting the outer end ot the motor shait in a ball bearing T and containing suitable reduction gearing for connecting the motor shaft to the driving connections for the drums U aud V. The gear box S is provided with a cover Y c .7, e plate w having caps )a and l tor convenience of assembly.
A rotatable hollow center bearing Z around the motor shaft H 'forms a drum shaft on which the drums U and V are rotatably mounted and ball bearings and Z) are provided for the drum shalt in the intermediate casing L and gear box S respectively. Bearing sleeves o and (Z are provided on the drum shaft for the drums and spacing washers c, f, y, and 7L are located at the ends ot the bearing sleeves. The drums are provided with the usual ropes or cables y' and L' forming' the haulage and tail ropes in accordance with the usual operation ot such hoists.

The drum shaft Z is provided with a spiralled gear o between the drums and an internally spiralled sleeve 1U cooperates with said spiral gear and forms a main driver for the drums having oppositely facing teeth or jaws m and y/ et Iits sides. These teeth may conveniently be formed on a ring 3 suitably secured to the sleeve w as by means of the screws l. The teeth @c and v/ on the main driver are adapted to cooperate alternatelyV with the teeth or jaws y5 and 6 on the drums U and V respectively, which drum teeth form drum drivers. rlhe main driver or sleeve w is moved longitudinally With relation to the drum shaft in one direction or the other according to the direction of rotation ofthe motor and in order to insure this longitudinal movement of the drum driver, a brake in the form of a shoe 7 (Figure 2) is provided for the main driver. lihe .shoe 7 ymay be' pivoted at 8 on a brake beam 9 pivotally hung from the pin 10 inside the protective housing 0. The loiver end of the bra-ke beam is adapted to be pressed toward the main driver by means of the spring 12 seated in the socket 13 in the lovver portion of the central housing 0. The socket 13 is slotted at 'ill to receive'the end of the brake beam and centering the same. A. cap 15 is secured over the socket 13 as by means of the bolts 16. l
Operative connections are provided between the motor shaft H and the drum shaft Zand in this instance the drum shaft Z is provided with the large internal gear 17 and the motor shaft is 'girovided With the pinion Y 18 meshing with the intermedate gear-19 on the countershaft 2O to Which is also connected the intermediate pinion 21. meshing With the internal gear 17. By this means rotation of the motor shaft H in one direction or the other will cause corresponding rotation of the drum shaft Z and Will cause the main driver w to be moved longitudinally on the spiralled gear e to bring the clutch teeth v or y into engagement With the teeth 5 or 6 on the drums. ln Figure 1, the main driver is shown in neutral position and when the main driver'is in engagement With the drum driver of one drum which becomes the haulage drum, the other drum is loose on the other shaft and becomes the.
