FOLDABLE TABLE.
Application led April 13, 1925. Serial No. 22,816.
To all w/iom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CARL R. KosiTziiY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bismarck, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fold,- able Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This application relates to improvements in foldable tables and is directed more particularly to means for detachably connectingthe table legs with the table top.
The object of the invention is to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive construction by means of which the table legs may be easily attached or detached, and may be4 rigidlyT held in position for use.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective View showing one leg detached fi'oin the contiguous portion of the table top.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the leg-attaching means.
In the drawing above briefly described, a table top T is shown constructed in accordance with my U. S. Patent No. 1,422,- L150, said top including al flexible covering and foldable frame to which said covering is secured, said frame including twoy pairs of bars B and B. While my present invention. is designed primarily to connect table legs L with aftable top of the form mentioned, the legs of practically any form of table could be attached in the same manner.
In the present showing, each of the bars B is formed in its lower side with two shallow, rectangular recesses 1. these recesses opens through the lower side of the bar B and through one vertical edge 0f the latter, and a horizontal metal plate Each of 2 is provided to span the lower side of the recess, said plate being secured to the lower side of the bar byscrews or the like 3 and being preferably inlaid in the lower side of said bar, as shown.
(3o-operable with each plate 2, for attaching the leg L, is a connecting member 4. This member is formed from a single metal plate bent substantially upon itself to provide a horizontal attaching base 5, 1 and an overhanging tongue 6. The base is secured to the upper extremity of the 'leg L, by screws or the like 7, and to enable driving of these screws after the connecting member t has been formed, the tongue 6 of said member is formed with openings 8 through which the screws may be passed, said openings 8 being in alinement with countersunk screw holes 9 in thebase 5.
The base 5 and the tongue 6 are adapted to straddle the plate 2 and to frictionally engage its lower and upper sides respectively, so that a rigid, yet a detachable connection is provided for the table leg. Pref erably, the plate 2 is transversely tapered to some extent as shown, and the parts 5 and 6 diverge toward their free ends accordingly. Thus, a wedging action is obtained which will tightly hold the parts in assembled position. When the legs are detached, the foldable frame of the top T may be folded, and the legs, frame and Hexible top covering all rolled together and placed within a convenient sheath, such as a fabric bag (not shown).
It will be seen from the foregoing` that While the invention is simple and inexpensive, it will be eflicient and desirable, and on account of the adwiiitages existing for the construction shown, it is preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, slight modifications may of course be made.
I claim 1. A table comprising a top having a horizontal bar at its lower side, said bar having a recess which opens through its lower side and through one of its vertical edges, a horizontal plate secured to said lower side of the bar and spanning said 10i'.l
recess, zr second plate bent substantially said plate being transversely tapered, und upon itself to provide an attaching base Said base and tongue diverging toward their and an overhanging tongue adapted to fricl GHClS, whereby t0"p10VCl 2L Wedgng 10 tiornally engage the lower and upper sides RCIOII- i 5 ofithe rst named plate respectively, and a In testlmQnY WheeO I 119W@ heleultO leg to which said attaching base is secured. alxed my Slgntule- V:2. A structure as specifiedl in claim l; CARL REINHOLDT KOSITZKY.
