This device when applied to the rods 6 and 8, the dash 1 and the arm 4 of the bell crank lever, is located with the inverted U-shaped portion formed by sections 10, 11 and 12 lying snugly against the front of the dash with the section 12 bearing against a side of the rod 6. The coil 14 is also located fiat against the front side of the dash and the section 15 extends upwardly between the dash and the rod 8, said rod being received in the bend of the loop formed by the sides 16 and 18 and the bend 17 connecting the same. In applying the device in this manner the coil 14is placed under tension by reason of the fact that the section 15 must be bent toward the section 12, the coil 14 located between said sections 12 and 15 being stressed. The terminal portions 20 and 2l of said device are engaged with and hooked over the 'upper edge of the arm 4, said arm 4 being subjected to the spring tension of said device as it is necessary to bend the arm 2O somewhat toward the arm 18 in making this connection with the arm 4. The section 12 of the device is pressed with spring tension against the side of the rod 6 forcing the same over against one side of the dash slot through which it passes, and the rod 8 is acted upon by said device forcing the same over against the opposite side of the dash slot through which it passes. rIhe bell crank lever is engaged by the end of said deviceV with a yielding spring tension so that both rods 6 and 8 and the bell crank lever are frictionally held in place and do not vibrate and rattle during the operation of the machine. In operating the choke, that is, by pulling back on the knob 7 it is evident that the part 2O is moved with the movement of the bell crank arm 4 but the spring character of the material from which the device is made readily permits this, while a further function is served by the device in that it automatically returns the choke operating means to normal position as soon as free to do so. This is of value, irrespective of the fact that the choke valve associated with the carburetor may be spring actuated itself, as such spring on the choke valve is susceptible to breakage which occurs quite frequently; and if suc-h breakage of the choke valve occurs the device illustrated and described herein serves to move the choke valve to its normal position and hold the same therein except when manually operated to a different position.
The simplicity of the construction of the anti-rattling device shown and described is a valuable feature of the invention inasmuch as it can be produced at very low cost. The installation is exceptionally easy and simple, requiring no tools and the spring tension developed in the anti-rattling device when it is installed precludes its disconnection from the parts with which it is associated. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered as comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
1. In combination with a vertically disposed automobile dash, a needle valve operating rod extending downwardly and forwardly through said dash, and a choke valve operating means mounted on the front side of said dash and comprising a pivotally mounted bell crank lever and an operating rod therefor extending upwardly and to the rear through the dash, of an anti-rattling device disposed against the front side of the dash and having parts engaging against said rods and bell crank lever with yielding spring tension to hold the same against aimless movement.
2. In combination with the vertically disposed dash of an automobile, a needle valve operating rod passing downwardly and forwardly through said dash, said dash having a slot for the passage of the rod, and a choke valve operating means mounted on the front side of the dash and including an operating rod extending downwardly and forwardly'through the dash which is provided with a second slot for the passage of said second rod, of an anti-rattling device mounted in front of the dash and having parts engaging against both rods, said parts engaging against the rod being under spring tension to thereby force each rod against a side of its slot and prevent rattling of the rods.
8. In combination with a vertically disposed automobile dash having two slots cut therein, two rods extending downwardly and forwardly through said slots in the dash, an anti-rattling device formed from a single piece of spring wire located between the rods and engaging against the same on their adjacent sides, said device between its points of engagement with the rods being formed with a spring coil whereby the parts of the device engaging the rods are pressed against said rod with spring tension, substantially as described. v n
4. In combination with an automobile dash having two slots cut therethrough, of two rods extending downwardlyv and forwardly one through each slot, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted at the front side of the dash with which the lower end of one of said rods is connected, an anti-rattling device located between the rods including an intermediate spring section from which arms extend outwardly at an angle to each other said arms being adapted to be bent toward each other to pass between the rods so that one engages against one side of one rod and the vother engages against the adjacent side of the other rod, one of said arms being continued and formed into a spring loop having a terminal end portion under spring tension engaging with an arm of the bell crank lever.
5. An anti-rattler for the purposes described comprising, an intermediate spring coil having the end portions thereof extended at an angle to each other, one of said end portions at its end being formed into a loop disposed substantially at right angles to said end portion, said loop being continued and formed into a return bend and terminating in a straight section having a right angle hook at its end, substantially as described.
6. An anti-rattler for the purposes described formed from a single piece of spring wire and comprising a spring coill having end portions extendlng from the coil at an angle to each other, one of said end portions being formed into inverted U-shape and the other turned substantially at right angles and formed into a loop and thence extended and formed with a return bend and terminating in a spring section having a right angle hook at its extreme end, substantially as described.
