Description

INVENTOR- THE GRAPHIC CO.FHDYD-IJTH.15& 4-! PARK PMEE,N.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
CHAUNOEY H. CASTLE, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ST OVE-PIPE ELBOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0- 154,836, dated September 8, 1874; application filed July 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY H. OAS- TLE, of Quincy, Illinois, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Stove- I ,Pipe Elbows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings.
It is well known that stove-pipe elbows, of an analogous shape to that herein mentioned, have been heretofore made in one piece, but in all such the plate sustaining the stove-pipe has formed a part of the bowl or elbow, or has been bolted or riveted thereto. The objectlons to these constructions are, that with the first a breakage of the said plate destroys the utility of the entire device; and in last, several holes have to be drilled or cast to connect the plate and elbow. To obviate these objections is one object of the present invention.
The invention relates to an improvement in stove-pipe elbows; and consists in the peculiar devices and structure-hereinafter described for retaining in position the plate sustaining the stove-pipe without the employment of bolts or rivets.
Figure 1 is a bottom view'of a device embodying the invention; 'Fig. 2, a section through the middle of the same; Fig. 3, a detached view of the plateH; Fig. 4, a detached view of the locking-frame P; Fig. 5, a view of the upper edge of the bowl A.
A in the accompanying drawings is the bowl or elbow, the concavity'of which fits over the vent through which the smoke and products of combustion pass to the chimney. The outside of the upper edge of the bowl A is provided with a bead, B, having the projecting ear D at its center, and the projecting ears E at each side where the bead meets the flange F, which serves to secure the bowl to thestove. The plate H is provided with the aperture. and circumjacent rim to secure the base of the pipe, while its outer edge curves downward, and is provided at its center'with. the
I ear I, and on each side with the ears L, all of which project inward, and are arranged to fit under the ears D and E respectively, thus securing the plate H upon the bowl A. Below theinner straight edge ofthe plate H the flange M projects downward to overlap the flange N upon the upper edge of the'locking-frame P, the sides of which fit into recesses made in each side of the inner edges of the bowl A, the ears b on the lower corners of the locking-frame, also fitting into recess in the bowl below the recesses aforesaid, the ears b bein g provided with apertures to receive the rivets securing the bowl to the stove. Thus the inner surface of the locking-frame is flush with the corresponding edges of the bowl, andv the device can be snugly secured to the stovebarrel. The locking-frame serves to prevent the plate H sliding rearward, while the ears on the bowl and plate prevent its being raised or moved laterally, and thus the attachment is efiected without the use of a rivet or bolt.
It is obvious that the locking-frame can be used alone to secure the plate H in position, as the weight of the pipe will prevent the elevation of the plate. Hence, the use'of the ears D, E, I, and L may be avoided.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The locking frame P, provided with the flange N, in combination with the bowl A, having the ears D and E, and plate H, provided with the ears I and L, for the purpose of attaching the plate to the bowl, in the manner described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvements in stove-pipe elbows, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th day of June, 1874.
