[0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD J. DE GUENTHER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Rims for "Closet-Bowls; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention pertains to new and useful improvements in toilets or closets, and more particularly in cover attachments therefor.

It being difficult to efficiently attach the covers and seats to sheet metal and similar closets, the principal obj cct of the invention is to provide a simply constructed rim or the like which may be secured to the upper edge of a closet bowl and have the usual seat and cover hinged thereto.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this character which can be readily cast from suitable metal to thus reduce its cost and the cost of manufacture of closets of the type with which it is used to minimum.

A further object is to provide a cast metallic rim for sheet metal and similar closet bowls having simple, yet very efficient means for properly seatingit in position.

With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the following de scription and claims.

Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse sectional view through the upper end of a metallic closet bowl having my improved cover rim secured in position thereon, and

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lower side of the rim, the same being detached from the closet.

Referring now more particularly to said drawing, it will be seen that I have indi cated a metallic, such as sheet metal, closet bowl by the numeral 1, the same having an open top and ventilating outlet pipe 2 My cover rim attachment consists of a relatively oval, ring-like flat plate 3, from the inner edge of which an attaching flange 1 depends. This flange is of the same configuration and size as the inner surface of the closet wall and is designed for engagement therewith as Specification of Letters Patent.

shown in Fig. 1. It is preferably secured to said wall by rivets or the. like 5.

The upper surface of the plate 3 is in a substantially horizontal plane and is adapted to have a seat 6 rest thereon, the usual. cover '7 being provided to close the opening of the seat. The plate projects beyond the outer wall of the closet throughout the circumferencc thereof but at the rear it is materially widened to form an ear 8. In casting the rim, a pair of spaced openings 9 are formed in the ear 8 to receive the attaching shanks 10 of seat and cover hinge standards 11. It will be noted that the openings 9 are relatively countersunk to more effectively receive and seat the shanks 10.

At a plurality of points on the under surface of the plate 3 and at its junction with the flange i are cast lugs 12 which seat against the upper edge of the closet wall as shown in Fig. 1. It will also be seen from this figure that the ear 8 is thicker than the other portions of the plate 3, it being the same thickness as the lugs 12 so that it will also engage said upper edge of the closet wall. As a result of such construction the major portion of the plate 3 may be cast quite thin and yet be of considerable strength owing to the reinforcement of the ribs 12 and the ear 8. Also owing to the relatively few points of contact between the upper edge of the closet and the cover rim, no machine-work is required in finishing the latter. In other words the rim is practically ready to be applied as soon as cast.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be appreciated that I have devised a very simple, yet extremely eflicient, attaching rim for metallic closets whereby the usual seats and covers may be quickly and easily mounted in position thereon. The engagement between the attaching flange and the other portions of the rim and the closet wall will be so positive that a practically air tight joint is formed. Various modifications may be made in the form and proportion. of the rim as well is in the manner of attaching the same without departing from or sacrificing any of the features of the invention.

I claim:

1. An attachment of the class described comprising a relatively annular flat plate forming a cover seat, a plurality of lugs on the under side of said plate to provide seats for engagement with the upper edge of a receptacle, and an ear extending from one side of the plate, the upper surface of said ear being in the plane of the cover seating surface of the plate, said ear being of a thickness equal to the combined thickness of the lugs and the plate and adapted to also rest on said receptacle edge.

2. The combination with a sheet metal receptacle, of a rim therefor comprising a relatively annular angle member, its vertical flange forming an attaching portion engaging the inner surface of the wall of the receptacle at its open end, the horizontal flange extending over the edge of said open end of the receptacle, a plurality of lugs on the under surface of said horizontal flange for engagement with the edge of said receptacle, and an ear extending from one side of the horizontal flange, its upper surface being in the plane of the similar surface of the horizontal flange to provide a cover seat, said ear being adapted to have a cover hinged thereto.
