Description
E. J. RENKENBERGER.
STOVE LID.
APPLICATION FILED 001'. 15, 1907.
Patented Mar. 2, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD J. RENKENBERGER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
STOVE-LID.
Application filed October 15,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. RENKENBER- GER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stove lids of the type embodying a skeleton frame having a sheet metal surface plate detachably connected therewith, and has for its obj ects to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character wherein the surface plate will be firmly supported from beneath and warping of the lid minimized, one in which the plate may be conveniently removed for renewal from time to time as required, and one which will in practice heat readily and radiate a maximum amount of heat.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a stove lid embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3- 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail, sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the lid comprises a skeleton strengthening frame 1 and a sheet metal surface plate 2 detachably secured to the frame 1 by means of fastening members or screws 3 appropriately spaced around the margin of the plate which may be made of sheet iron, copper or other suitable material, while the frame 1 is preferably composed of steel or the like.
he frame 1, which is of the usual circular form, comprises an outer marginal portion or ring 4 and an inner, annular portion 5 joined to the ring 4 by means of integral radiating arms or webs 6, near the outer ends of which Specification of Letters Patent.
are threaded perforations 7 for the reception of the screws 3, while formed on one of the Patented March 2, 1909.
1907. Serial No. 397,520.
webs 6 is a hollow boss or enlargement 8 resenting a chamber 9 disposed beneat a lifter opening 10 formed in the surface plate 2. The outer marginal ring 4 has formed on its lower face a flange 11 adapted to fit in the lid opening of a stove and on its upper face a countersunk, inner marginal recess 12 in which the plate 2 seats.
In practice, the spider-shaped body of the frame will effectually support the surface plate 2 from beneath and at the same time expose substantially the entire area of the plate to the action of the fire, whereby the plate will become rapidly heated and will, because of its light weight and character, radiate a maximum amount of heat. Also the lid as a whole will, owing to the skeleton formation of the frame and the thin nature of the plate 2, freely expand, thereby minimizing liability of the lid to warp, while the plate 2 may be readily and inexpensively renewed from time to time should circumstances require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A stove lid comprising a skeleton frame, said frame embodying an outer rim and an internal spider integral with each other, the rim being formed in its upper surface with a recess around the inner marginal edge thereof and one of the arms of the spider being enlarged and chambered to provide a socket, and a plate covering and resting upon the spider with its edge seated and secured in the recess of the rim, said plate having its upper face flush with the upper surface of the rim and being provided with a slot registering with said socket and of less area than the latter.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWARD J. RENKENBERGER.
Witnesses:
GEORGE C. RENKENBERGER, OHRIT Sonnorr.
