Description
B. MAGOVERN. COLLAPSIBLE BucKs'r. FILED NOV. 5. 192].
Patented en. 19, 1922.
i lag BARNARD MAGOVERN, or rnrnnnono, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
oonnarsrnnn sucker.
Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNARD Maoovnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peterboro, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Buckets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the' accompanying drawings. y
This invention relates to buckets, and more particularly to a collapsible bucket.
It is an object of the invention to provide a bucket of this character capable of being made from fabric and rolled in any manner desired to render the bucket compact for storage in any convenient place.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a bucket of this character having a. substantially frustro-conical body portion formed from a sheet of fabric, the large or open end portion of the bucket being provided with ears or loops adapted to receive a bail whereby the bail and bucket may be moved relative to each other without causing waste of the contents of the bucket.
It is still a further object of the invention to provide a bucket of this character-including a novel form of protector adapted to extend transversely of the open end of the bucket and having its ends secured to the side portion of the bucket to provide a guard or protector for-the spout of the bucket and prevent waste of the contents of the bucket when the same is being dis charged.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collapsible bucket constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, a portion of the bucket being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the struc ture shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view of the blank from which the body member is formed;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of one end of the handle and one of the loops; and
Figure 5 is a detailed view of the guard.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates 55 the body portion of the bucket which may be formed from a sheet of fabric such as rub- 5, 1921. Serial No. 513,072..
berized cloth, canvas, oil cloth, etc. The sheet of fabric from which the body portion 5 is formed has its end portions 6 and 7 ertended substantially obliquely of the sheet from the longitudinal edgeS of the sheet to the longitudinal edge 9 of the sheet, so that when the ends 6 and 7 are secured to each other a substantially frusto-conical body memberis formed, the smallend of the body memberforniing the lower portion of the bucket.
The longitudinal edge 8 of the body memher is provided with a substantially V- shaped recess 10 to which a spout member 11 is secured. The spout member is substantially semi-oval shaped and is secured at its end portion 12 to the margin of the V-shaped opening or recess in such a way that the end portion 13 is disposed substantially in theplane of the upper edge or open end of the bucket. A circular sheet of fabric 14 is adapted to be disposed in the smaller end of the body member 5, said circular end being secured at its edge to the longitudinal edge 9 of the body member after the ends 6 and '7 have been connected to each other. in this way the bottom of the bucket is formed. To assist in rendering the connection of the bottom with the body member of the bucket water-proof, a strip of fabric 15 is placed over the stitching connecting the bottom 14, with the body member 5 and is secured orsewed thereby preventing the liquid in the bucket from leaking through the openings made by the stitches in the connection of the bottom to the body member. lVhen the body member is formed, the seam of the connection of the ends 6 and 7 is disposed centrally of the rear portion. of the bucket, or in other words, diametrically opposite the spout 11.
In order to prevent the contents of the bucket from spilling when the same is being discharged therefrom, a novel guard or protector 16 is provided. This protector consists of a substantially arcuate strip of fabric having its end portions extending sub-' stantially obliquely of thestrip and adapted to be secured to the edges of the body menber adjacent the spout 11, the edges of the strip being substantially parallel to the edge of the bucket. This permits the guard to incline toward the spout and substantially form a funnel through the cooperation of the bucket so that splashing or spilling of the contents when the bucket is being emptied is prevented. To facilitate emptying of the bucket, a stripof fabric 17 is connected to the bottom of the body member, said fabric being disposed adjacent the seam of the connecting ends 6 and 7.
Secured to each side of the bucket, that is, to the side portion of the bucket between the spout and the rear seam of the body member, is a loop or ear 18, each loop or car consisting of a strip of fabric which, may be folded or rolled several times to substantially provide a circular member in cross section to substantially reinforce the-ear. After the fabric has been folded or rolled the ends of the strip are secured to. the sides of the bucket, so as to permit the intermediate portion or bight portion of the strip to project abovethe edge of the bucket. These ears or loops are disposed diametrically opposite each other. A bail member 19 is also provided, said bail member, similar to the loops or ears, consisting of astrip of fabric folded or rolled several times to provide a reinforced strip or bail. 21 of the bail or strip are passed through the ears or loops 18 and extended back upon the strip to provide loops 22 and 23, said loops being relatively large so as to eliminate friction to a large extent and permit the bail to move independently of the bucket to prevent spilling of the contents of the bucket When the bucket is beingfilled or the contents discharged.
From the foregoing it Will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of collapsible bucket capable of being rolled into a compact form and conveniently carried or placed in a small space, thereby rendering the device especially useful-to motorists and campers. In addition to this, the substantially conical form of the bucket facilitates discharge of the contents of the bucket, as the walls of the bucket Will grad- The ends 20 and in one end of and stitched to said body portion, opposed fabric loop members stitched to the sides of the body member remote from the bottom of said body member, a fabric bail member movably engaged With said loops, the upper portion of the bucket diametrically opposite the connected ends of said body member being provided With a substantially V-shaped recess, and a. fabric spout member stitched to the edges of said 2. A collapsible fabric bucket comprising a fabric sheet having its end portions connected to each other to provide a body portion, a fabric bottom member disposed Within one end of and stitched to said body portion, opposed fabric loop members stitched to the sides of thebody member remote from the bottom of said body member, a fabric bail member movably engaged With said loops, the upperportion of the body diametrically opposite the connected ends of said body member being provided with a sub stantially V-shaped recess, a fabric spout member stitched to the edges of said recess, and a fabric guard member stitched to the sides of the bucket adjacent the edges of the V-shaped opening and between the loops.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
I BAR-NARD MAGOVERN.
