Application filed nine 19, 191 Serial 1\T03O5,319.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it knownthat I LLIAM BING, a
of California: a nvented a! certain new and useful Printing Device,.0f which the fol g lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to printing devices in the form of rubber type where a separate,
member is used for each character and said members are interchangeable and the'objects of my invention are: first, to provide a printing device of this class in which the separate characters are easily placed in position without the reading of the type wrong side up or wrong side to; second, to provide a printing device of this class with a resilient backing for the type to provide for printing on rough and uneven surfaces; third, to provide individual type with the character on both sides of the type so that itmay be readily read rightside up and placed in position in that form; fourth, to provide a novel type structure; fifth, to provide novel means for supporting the type in position and slxth, to provide a device of this class which 1s simple and economical of construction, durable, easy to operate, easy to install andin which the type are easily positioned.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my device in the preferred form through 11 of Fig. 2; Fig.2 is a bottom view of the device showing some of the type in position therem ready for printing; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a fragmentary portion of the device shown open'ready for placing the type in position with some of the type in position; Fig. 4 is a top vlew of a fragmentary portion of the device as shown 1n Flg. 3; Fig. 5'is a transverse sectional view through 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the type members and Fig. 7 is a similar view from the opposite direction.
Similar characters of reference refer to principal several views of the drawings.
The type member l,type supports 2, backing pad 3, and base member & constitute the parts and portions of my prints ing device. i i
The typegmember l is preferably a resilient member but may be metallic if desired.
similar parts and portions throughout the Itis provided with a printingcharacter 1 extending fromitsface a awah the same reference character l fshowing on the back so that the type maybe read and set from the back side in its properform, shape and position.
one end by means of hinges 2, and at its opposite end is provided with latches 2 adapted to extend over the edge of the base memher i for holding the members 2 in position. Mounted between the back surface of the type when in position and the basemember 4 is a resilient cushion or backing 3 which 7 It is provided with oppositely disposedextended sides 1 which are adapted to rests against the back side'of thetype and holds them in position, but permit their depression when extraordinary pressure is brought to bear against any particular portion of the typeline. The base member 4: is preferably metallic and may be flat or curved surface as desired, (the shape of this base member being no part of my present invention.-
Though I have shown anddescribed a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth'in the appended claims.
It is obvious that with this construction there is provided a printing device in which the type may be placed in position and read from the back side in the regular form so that the type are easily positioned. That there is provided a resilient pad back of the type thus permitting some of the type to give in printing on uneven surfaces. That the type are readily placed in line ,in their proper position and the lines of type supported against the resilient back.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of'the class described, including a Wholly resilient stamp member provided with an integral resilient type character extending from the one side thereof, and provided with a similar type character positioned on the back of said stamp member, and similarly positioned and provided with tapering end walls extending from the face of said type backwardly at opposite sides, oppositely disposed flanges on said member at the back side for supporting the same, a curved surface base member, a resilient pad positioned against the outer curved surface of said base member and a plurality of resilient strap members secured together at their ends only with one end hinged to said base member adapted to extend over the curved surface of said base member and bear against the base of said flanges on said stamp member for supporting said stamp member in position.
2. A device of the class described, including a longitudinally curved base member, a plurality of straps pivotally mounted on one end and extending longitudinally over the face of said base member, latch means for supporting them at their other ends, resilient stamp members provided with resilienttype with facsimile characters on their'ffoiit back surfaces providedw'ith 0151565 posed flanges adapted 'to be en aged by strap for supporting said strap fiie'ifibeisin position and handles positioned (in oppbs'ite ends of said base member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set 40 my hand at San Diego, Califoiniaftlfis 14th day of June, 1919.
