FFHQEW PATENT LOGAN W. MARSHALL, OF SIDNEY, OHIO.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed June 16,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOGAN W. MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in loose leaf binders, having for an object to provide a loose leaf binder so constructed as to rigidly secure the binding posts employed in connection therewith in proper relative positions and against undesired sliding movement or displacement.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a binder of the character described employing a post anchoring plate in which the binding posts are adapted to be engaged, whereupon a locking plate or strip is engaged with such binding posts for locking the same against relative movement or displacement.
Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings, and in the detailed following description based thereon, set out one possible embodiment of the same.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a detail in perspective of the binding post locking plate or strip;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the base or anchoring plate;
.Jigure 3 is a like view of the cover plate for the anchoring plate; and,
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through the improved loose leaf binder.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, the invention may be stated to comprise a substantially rectangular plate designated by the numeral 1, formed of metal, composition, or other suitable material and having a plurality of transversely disposed slots or ways 2, 3 and a formed therein and opening onto one marginal portion thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 2. These slots 2, 3 and. 4:, as will be noted, are under cut or substantially T-shaped in cross section, the pur 1921. Serial No. 478,057.
pose of which will be subsequently apparent.
Cylindrical binding posts, one of which. is shown and indicated by the numeral 5 are provided, and as will be noted, have the basal portions thereof provided with enlargements 6, while heads 7 are formed upon the upper or remaining end of the same. The diameter of the binding posts 5 and their respective enlarged basal portions 6 issuch as to permit of snug reception of the same in the under cut slots 2, S and 4, thus ensuring their retention in vertical positions with respect to the anchoring plate 1 or at right angles thereto.
It should be noted that the transverse slots 2 and t formed in the plate 1 are of substantially right angular formation or of the bayonet slot type; the right angular portion of the slot 2 being disposed in a oirection opposite to and outwardly from the disposition of the right angular portion of the slot 4. The slot 3 isregular throughout and is arranged in parallelism with the corresponding portions of the slots 2 and l. Consequently, with engagement of the binding posts 5 in the slots 2-, 3 ande, one of the same will be engaged in the right angular extremity of the slot 2, while the other will. be engaged in the extremity of the straight or regular slot 3 and the re maining post will be engaged in the oppositely disposed right angular extremity of the slot l.
With a view towards providing means for locking the binding posts 5 in their relative positions as above set forth a looking plate or strip generally indicated by the numeral 8 is provided the same being formed of metal, composition, or other suitable material and corresponding in shape and. size to the anchoring plate 1. Spaced openings 9 are formed longitudinally of the plate 8 and are adapted to receive the barrel portions of the binding posts ,5 therethrough as shown in the Figure 4. Thus, with the locking plate 8 engaged with the barrel or shank portions of the binding posts 5 positioned in their respective slots 2, 3 and 4, it will be understood that relative movement as between said binding posts will be prevented and in consequence, displacement thereof with relation to the anchoring plate 1 will be likewise prevented.
As means for covering the lower side of the anchoring plate 1 and preventing dis placement of the basal portions of the various binding posts 5 with relation thereto, a cover strip 10 be and preferably is provided, said strip being formed of material corresponding to that from which the plates 1 and 8 are formed and being cornpl mental thereto in shape. @penings 11 are formed longitudinally tnroughout the plate 10 and are adapted to coincide with openings 12 formed in the anchoring plate 1, whereby rivets or other suitable tastening devices '13 may he passed therethrough and the two plates 1 and 10 thereby joined or united. With the cover strip 10 over the lower portions of the under cut slots 2, 3 and t, it will be understood, hereinhe'lore set forth, that; displacement of the binding posts 5 will be prevented and furthermore, that bearing surfaces will be provided the enlarged basal portions 6 of the same, permitting ot their sliding. introdui'rtion into the slots 2, 3 and 4% prior to engagement of the locking plate 8 over their barrel or shank portions.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that I have provided a simple but etl'ectual form of loose leaf binder wherein the various binding posts employed will he rigidly secured in their relative and adjusted posi tions by means of the locking plate 8. However, should it be desired said. plate 8 may be disengaged from the shank portions of the binding posts 5 and said bin eiling posts then disengaged from their respective slots 2, 3 or 4 as the case may be.
Furthermore, it is to be borne in mind that any number of the slots 2, 3 or t may be employed or formed in the anchoring or base plate 1, such as conditions or preference ma dictate. However, it is essential that the outermost of these slots be of right angular formation and that their right angular portions be extended in opposite outwardly directions in the manner indicated in the Figure 2, whereby with engagement of the locking plate 8 therewith, lateral or longitudinal displacement of the binding posts with respect to the anchoring plate will be prevented.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such mod'fication as is within the scope 01": my claims, I consider within the spirit oi my invention.
I claim:
1. A loose leaf binder comprising an anchoring plate having a plurality of ways formed therein transversely of the same and opening onto one marginal portion thereof, certain of said ways being of right angular formation and having their angular port-ions disposed in opposite outward directions, binding posts having enlarged basal portions engaged. in the extremities of said ways, and a locking plate en 'aging the shank portions of said binding posts.
2. it loose leaf binder comprising an anchoring plate having a plurality ot ways formed therein transversely of the same and opening onto one marginal portion thereof, certain of said ways being of right angular formation and arranged adjacent the opposite extremities of the anchoring plate hav ing their right angular portions disposed in opposite outward directions, binding posts having enlarged basal portions slidably en gaged in the extremities of said ways, and a locking plate having openings therein receiving the shank portions of the binding posts therein.
3. is, loose leatbinder comprising an an choring plate having a plurality oit ways formed therein transversely of the same and opening onto one marginal. portion thereot certain of said ways being oi right angular formation and arranged adjacent theopposite extremities of the anchoring plate having their right angular portions disposed in opposite outward directions and in parallelism to said marginal portion of the anchoring p .te, binding posts slidably engaged in the entiemities of said ways, and a locking plate having openings formed throughout he sz me engaging the shank portions of id binding posts.
binder comprising an anchoring plate having a plurality 0'? under out slots formed therein transversely of the same and opening ontoone marginal portion thereof, certain on": said slots being of right angular tormation and arranged adjacent the opposite extremities oi said anchoring plate having their right angular portions disposed in op aosite outward directions and in parallelism to said marginal portion oi the anchoring plate, binding posts having enlarged basal portions slidahly engaged in the extremities ct said under cut slots, a cover strip engaged over the lower face of said anchoring slate and connected to the san'ie, and a locking plate corresponding in size and shape to said anchoring plate having openings therein to receive the shank portions of the binding posts therein.
In testimony whereof, I my signature in the presence of two witnesses at Sidney, Ohio, this 11th day of June, 1921.
