. improvement in a device of the class described adapted for binding and holding leaves, such as the leaves of scrap-books, letters, and the like.

In the present instance it is my intention to provide a device whereby the leaves, either individually or in folios, may be held securely in place within the covering` of a book. Furthermore, my invention permits such leaves to be removed expeditiously and easily or to be arranged in any desired position or order, before the binder is completed and ready for use as a permanent bound volume until such a time as it is desired to remove the back and add, remove, or substitute other matter for binding.

The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings wherein, by way of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken through a book embodying my improvements and showing the manner of securing the leaves therein; Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal, section view of the back of the book, such figure being broken to shorten up the view, it being understood that such back is of any length and size desired; Fig.

3 is a perspective view of the plate for holding the binding rods.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail, and particularly to Fig. l, A indicates the cover of a book, such, for instance, as a scrap-book, said cover being of any usual and preferred form of construction, the back 5 thereof being secured to the wooden back plate 6 in the well known manner. B indicates a plate of any suitable material such as metal, having the edge 7 rounded to conform to the shape of the back of the book and having upon the straight edge 8 thereof a plurality of under-turned teeth or prongs 9 suitably spaced apart. I provide two of these plates B, one of which is secured to the top edgeof the book through the means of any suitable fastening device, such as a screw 10, and the other of which is similarly secured to the bottom edge of the wooden back, the teeth or prongs being turned inward toward the back. The leaves of the book are shown at C and the means for holding the same in the present instance comprises a desired number of rods, 1l, of sufficient length to extend between Ithe top and bottom plates B, the head or end portions 12 of the rods 11 being upset or turned to prevent the disengagement from the plates when the ends of such rods are inserted between the teeth or prongs, as shown in Fig. 2.

From the above description the manner of employing and using my invention will be readily apparent. A double leaf or leaves, such for instance, as a folio of leaves, are placed upon or folded over the rod, as is shown in Fig. l, and the headed ends of the rod are then inserted between the teeth, or prongs of the upper and lower plates, as is shown in Fig. 2, the head or upset ends of the rod preventing the disengagement of the latter from the plates while the inturned prongs or teeth firmly hold the same and bind the leaves within the book. As will be seen by reference to the drawings the prongs or teeth engage with the back member when the latter is in place and the displacement of the headed rods is thereby prevented; it is therefore preferable to use a rack of any desired and suitable design for holding the end plates while the rod members are being put in position and before the back member is attached.

In my construction it will be noted that I have formed the rods extending the entire length of the book, so that the leaves are always firmly and securely held in position. The rods themselves, when so arranged, are sufficient to securely hold the leaves without the necessity of keying or otherwise holding the leaves at the center of the book.

The many advantages incident to a construction of this character will be readily apparent. For instance, the leaves may be inserted in the book at desired times or as required, and they will always be held firmly in position without shifting or sliding, as is the case where the leaves are mounted upon rods extending transversely of the back, and furthermore, as above recited, my device does not require the use of keys extending throughslots'in Vthe backof the leaves, as is the case where mere fingers are employed, extending downward from the back to the space between folded leaves, as has heretofore been proposed. By the use of my invention a binder is provided which comprises few parts, obtainable at a low cost; the parts may be assembled with ease and rapidity by an unskilled person, and when assembled the binder may be used as long as desired as a permanent file or the matter bound may be changed when necessary.

hile I have herein shownv and described one preferred embodiment of my invention, by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to all the precise details of construction and arrangement shown therein as modification and variationmay be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: y l

1. A binder of the class described comprising a plurality of flat plates, each formed with an in-turned portionv bearing teeth, a rod member extending between said plates and adapted to engage with and be held by said teeth, and means for securing said rod member in position comprising a vbaclr member extending between said plates in engagement with said teeth.

2.- A binder of the class described comprising a plurality of flat plates each formed with an iii-turned portion bearing spaced teeth of uniform size extendino' parallel with the body of the plate, a headec rod extending between said plates and held in position by said teeth, and means for securing said rod in position comprising a back member extending betweensaid plates in engagement with said teeth. 3. A binder of the class described comprising a wooden back, a fiat end plate secured to each end of the back and provided with a portion iii-turned at substantially a right angle adjacent one edge of the plate, spaced teeth formed on said in-turned portion of the plate and extending substantially parallel to the body of the plate, and headed rods extending between and held bythe teeth of opposite end plates, said teeth being adapted to engage with the back to secure the rods in position.
