Description

G. M. SMITH.
ICE CREEPER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 29. 1922.
Patented Oct. 17, 1922.
Patented Get. 17, 1922..
GEORGE M. SMITH,
or sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ICE CREEPER.
Application filed March 29, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. SMITH a citizen of the United States, residing at st. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Creepers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ice creepers and has for its object the provision of means whereby the same may be readily and securely attached to a shoe or detached therefrom.
A further objectis to provide a device of the character described which will be securely maintained in its operative position and which will not in any way injure the shoe to which it is attached.
A further object is to provide an ice creeper which is of highly simplified construction, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a perspective illustrating the application of the device.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same applied.
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 generally designates the body of the device and the body is as illustrated in Figure 1 formed from a single length of wire bent to provide a pair of arms 6 and a connecting portion 7. As illustrated in Figure l, the forward terminal portions of the arms 6 are extended outwardly and pointed to provide prongs 8 by means of which a firm grip may be obtained.
The body of the device is secured to the sole 10 of the shoe 11 by means of a pair of clips 14 formed from lengths of metal having their outer portions formed with lugs 15 adapted to grip the edge of the sole. The inner portions of the clips 14 are rolled to form eyes 16 which are slidable on the arms 6.
The arms 6 are, of course, permanently connected to the clips 14: and when it is de- Serial No. 547,609.
sired to attach the device to the shoe, the body is positioned as illustrated in full lines in Figure 2, and is subsequently moved to the dotted line position whereby the device is securely and positively gripped with the sole of the shoe.
As the arms converge toward the prongs, the movement of the same to the dotted line position in Figure 2 causes the lugs 15 to be securely and positively engaged with the edge of the sole.
In carrying out the invention, the forward portions of the arms 6 are joined by a transversely extending connecting strap 18 having its ends rolled and soldered or otherwise permanently secured to the arms. The stru p 18 also forms a handle by means of which the body may be moved longitudinally. Further, it will be seen that the transversely extending strap 18 limits the sliding movement of the clips 14: on the arms 6 so that the loss of the clips is prevented.
IVith reference to the foregoing description it will be structed in accordance with this invention may be economically manufactured and conveniently connected to a shoe for providing the desired traction. When it is desired to detach the device it is merely necessary to move the arms longitudinally with relation to the clips until the clips are loosened whereupon the same may be conveniently removed from the shoe.
I claim z- 1. A device of the character specified comprising a single length of metal bent intermediate its ends to provide converging arms and a connecting portion, the terminal portions of said arms being extended angularly to provide prongs, and a pair of clips having their inner portions permanently and slidably connected to said converging arms and having their outer portions formed with lugs adapted to engage the opposite edges of a shoe sole.
2. A device of the character specified comprising a single length of metal bent intermediate its ends to provide converging arms and a connecting portion the terminal portions of said arms being extended angularly to provide prongs, a pair of clips having their inner portions permanently and slidably connected to said converging arms and apparent that a device conhaving their outer portions formed With In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my lugs adapted to engage the opposite edges signature in the presence of tWo witnesses.
of a shoe sole, and a transversely extending connecting strap joining said arms and constituting means by Which the clips are forced into holding engagement With the shoe sole.
GEORGE M. SM-1TH.
Witnesses Mrs, RALPH E. SPEER, WINIFRED MCHALE.
