Application filed April 15, .1921, Serial No; 461,547. Renewed January 18, 1922. Serial No. 536,232.
To allwhom'it mag concern:
Be it known that I, ZAGHARY T. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bliss, in the county of Noble and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap-End-Attaching Devices; of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention provides economical and efficient means for attaching a strap-end to a ring, loop, buckle part, or the like.
It is an object. of the invention so to form such an attaching means of bendable sheet metal that it may be easily placed in association with a strap or the like and the part to be held thereby.
When considered in connection with the description herein, the characteristics of the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof,
. wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
what now is considered to be a preferable embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that it is not the intention to be Fig. 2 is a view of the device with a part bent over the ring and ready to receive the strap; and
Fig. 3 is a View of the blank from which the device is formed.
In the formation of the article, blanks of substantially the shape shown by Fig. 3 are cut or struck from strong bendable sheetmetal stock.
Such a blank includes a central web 4:, a
' covering side portion 5, and a clampingside portion 6, all presenting a somewhat elongated substantially rectangular surface. An extension 7, which is to form a loop member, projects at substantially right angles from the web of the elongated part of the blank. Prongs 8 are struck out to extend from surfaces of the parts 6 {and 7 before the blank is bent.
I lVhen the article to be formed from such a blank is to be associated with a ring, loop, or the like, the part 7 is*passedthereinto, either before or after partial bending,- and it IS bent over one side of the ring, loop, or the like at a place removed from the edge of the web and down against the web.
The end of the strap or the liketo be secured to the ring, loop, or the like is laid on the bent-over portion of the part 7, the clamping part 6 then is bent over and down against the strap or the like, and then the Specification of Lettersletent. Patentedl eb. 21,1922.
covering part 5 is bent over and downagainst the part 6.
The prongs are disposed in suchmanner 1n the parts 6 and'7 that they extend into the end of the strap or the like when l the parts are bent into place, and they thus obviate liability of the held part to slip from between the parts that are clamping it.
In order to make certain the engagement of the prongs in the held partand to prof v duce a comparatively flat article, the bent--' Although the disclosures herein exempllfy' over parts may be hammered down into place. A
Preferably, although not necessarily, the
down, should be long enough to extend over the openings made in striking out the prongs from the part 7, in order that rough places that may result from such operation may be covered and the completed article may be smooth.
Before laying the end of thestrap or the like on the bent-over part 7, it is advantageous to bend the parts 5 and 6 to positions substantially at right angles to the web 4, as shown by Fig. 2, in order to alford a guide for positioning the held part on the bentover part 7, and then to bendand'hammer down the parts .5 and 6 as, described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. As a connecting device for an end of a strap or thelike, a piece of bendable sheet metal having a central web, a leg extending therefrom arranged to be extended through and bent over a side of a ring or the like and down against the web, a clamping part extending from said web arranged to be bent over and down against a strap or the like on said bent-over leg, and another part 110 on said web arranged to be bent over and down against said clamping part.
2. As a connecting device for an end of a strap or the like, a piece of bendable sheet and bent over a side of a ring or the like and down against the web, a clamping part extending from said web arranged to be bent over and down against a strap or the-like on said bent-over leg and another part on said web arranged to be bent over and down against said clamping part, said leg and clamping part having projections arranged to extend into the article disposed between them.
3. The combination of a strap or the like and a loop or the like, and a connecting member comprising a web, a looped member extending from one side of the web around a side of the loop or the like and back over the web, a clamping member extending. from another side of the web over and holding the strap or the like against said looped member, and a covering member extending from a side of the web over the clamping member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ZACHARY T. I MILLER.
