To all whom, it may concern:

'Be it known that I, WILLIAM SWEENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the-county ofKing and State of Washington have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette- Making Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a cigarette making device which may be conveniently carried in the pocket. The object of my improvement is to provide a strong, simple and etlicient device of this character including a tobacco receptacle and cigarette making attachments which are arranged to occupy but little space. I I I Another object is to provide a cigarette making device-by which a fine grade of cigarette may be quickly and easily rolled without spilling tobacco.

A further object is the provision of novel and efficient means for releasably retaining the cigarette forming tube and tube-filling plunger within the tobacco container and serving to project said tube from the container when a cigarette is to be rolled.

@With the above and other objects in'view the invention consis ts'in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of parts as will be more clearly hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Flgure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of a cigarette making device'constructed 1n accordance with this invention, shown in a closed position. Like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 6 designates a box-like receptacle having hingedly connected thereto a cover '7 and adapted to serve as a container forrtobacco suitable for making cigarettes.

The box is provided in one end with a tubular bushing 8 that serves as a bearing through which a cigarette forming tube 9 may slide or telescope andin the other end of the box is provided a second bushing 10 which is in alignment with the bushing 8 and serving as a guide for a reciprocable tamping bar 11. i

The tamping bar 11 is furthermore guided within a tubular member 12 having an integral bracketl3' by which it is rigidly securedlas by'screws 1 to the w ll of the receptacle 6. The member 12 also serves as a guide for the cigarette forming tube '9 which telescopes thereover when in the closed position in which it is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The member 12 has a longitudinally extending slot' l5 in one side thereof for purposes hereinafterexplained.

Two springs 16 and 17 preferably made from a single pieceo-f wire and 'rigidly secured to the bracket 13 as'by a clip 18 are provided for urging the cigarette forming tube 9 and the tamping bar 11 outwardly.

The bar 11 may then bereleased so that the spring 17 will I move it outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the tube 9 may be grasped by the fingers and pulled outwardly until the flange 22 strikes bushing 8 and prevents further outward movement thereof.

A cigarette paper 26 may then be wrapped around the tube 9 and may be twisted at the bottom as at 27 and held with the fingers of one hand as shown and the bar 11 may be reciprocated with the fingers of the other hand to press tobacco outwardly through the tube 9 into the paper. As the paper fills with tobacco it will be moved outwardly on the tube and when full may be removed and have the other end twisted together to prevent loss of the tobacco preparatory to lighting.

The tobacco will be packed sufficiently within the tube 9 to form a good cigarette that will draw easily but will not burn too freely.

After the cigarette is made the container may be inverted so that any tobacco that is left within the tube 9 will drop back into the container. The tube 9 and bar 11 may then 'both be pressed inwardly into the container at the same time thereby causing the hook 21 to engage beneath the flange 22 and lock the said tube and bar in the position shown in Fi 1.

When the tube 9 is telescoped within the container the passageway therethrough will be closed by the guide member 15 and tamping bar 11 thereby preventing the passage of tobacco therethrough.

A cigarette making device comprising a tobacco receptacle, a cigarette forming tube v arranged to telescope within said receptacle from one side, a tamping bar arranged to telescope wlthin said receptacle from an op- 1,41s,soe v posite side and to project within. said eigarette forming tube, springs for urging said cigarette forming tube and said tamping bar outwardly, and releasable catch means for holding said cigarette forming tube and said tamping bar inwardly against the pressure of said springs.

A cigarette making device comprising a tobacco receptacle, a tubular guide member rigidly supported. within said receptacle, a cigarette forming tube slidable through one end of said receptacle and arranged to telescope over said tubular guide member, an outwardly directed annular flange on theinner end of said cigarette forming tube, a

.tamping bar slidable through the opposite end of said receptaclev and through said tubular guide member, a spring secured tosaid tubular guide and projecting in opposite directions therefrom one end of said spring being arranged to exert an outward pressure on said cigarette forming tube and the other end of said spring being arranged to exert an outward pressure on said tamping bar, and a catch hook connected with the last named end of said spring and arrangedto engage beneath the flange on the inner end of said cigarette forming tube. A cigarette making device comprising a tobacco receptacle, a tubular guide member rigidly supported within said receptacle said guide member having a slot extending lengthwise thereof, a cigarette forming tube telescopic through one end of said receptacle and arranged to fit over said guide member,

an outwardly directed. annular flange on the inner end of saidcigarette forming tube, a tamping bar arranged to telescope through the opposite end of said receptacle andvto project through said tubular guide member and into said cigarette forming tub.e,.a spring wire secured to said tubular guide member and projecting outwardly therefrom in opposite directions and thence back toward said guide member to form two springs they end of one of said springs being guided within the slot in said guide member and arranged to exert an outward pressure on said tube and the end of the other spring being arranged to urge said tamping bar outwardly, and a hook secured to the end of said tamping bar spring and arranged to engage beneath the flange on said tube.
