A. DUNHILL.
REC EPTACLE FOR CIGAR 0R CIGARETTE HOLDERS.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10. 19 9.-

1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED DUNI-IILL, or LoNnoN, ENGLAND. V
REcEr'rAo E r03, CIGAR on CIGARETTE HOLDERS.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it knownthat I, ALFRED DUNHILL, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in and Relating to Receptacles for Cigar 0r Cigarette Holders, of which 'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cigar and cigarette holders and to cases for use therewith and refers more particularly to holdersof the type in which the devicev is composed of two telescoping sections, so that it may be collapsed into a comparatively short length or drawn out, to the full ordinary length, I
131011 and adapted to be suspended as a charm from the watch chain, a bracelet or one of the sections constituting the. holder portion. proper and the other constituting the mouth piece. j 1
The holder constructed according to my. present invention is adapted to be collapsed into a very small compass so that. it can be packed in a special box or container which box or container may in some cases be made in the form of a charm or ornament to be suspended from the watch chain or from a bracelet or the like.
In carrying out my invention I form the holder from a plurality of, preferably from three or more tubular, slightly tapering sec tions, of approximately equal length, adapted to telescope with respect to one another, so that all the sections can be pushed down into the largest outer section or opened out into a long rigid tapering tube.
The sections may be of gold, silver or other material or combination of materials. For instance, the largest orholder section and the intermediate section constituting the mouth piece is of amber, tortoise shell or the like.
The mouth piece section is provided with an enlarged end of suflicient size to prevent the sections coming apart when the article is collapsed. I In some cases the amber or other mouth piece thus provided with an enlarged end, may be screwed into a gold or other band constituting part of the innermost section, or this mouthpiece with an enlarged end may constitute the section or some other equivalent construction may be provided.
The container, for the holder, which container constitutes an important feature of my invention is of cylindrical shape and of a size sufiicient to accommodate the holder when collapsed, and it is provided with Specification of Letters Patent. App1icaticni filed June-10, 1919. Serial No. 303,082.
Patented July 6, 1920.
of the collapsed holder in such a way that when the holder is in position within the container and it is desired to withdraw the same for use, upon taking hold of the innermost or mouthpiece section and drawing it out, the holder itself'is automatically drawn means for engaging the outermost section into the extended position as it-leaves the container.
And 111 order that my 7 said invention may be clearly understood,I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows to an enlarged scale a cigarette holder and case constructed according to my present inventhe like.
Figure 1 shows the container closed.
Fig. 2 shows the container open with the telescoping holder drawn out ready for removal from, the container. Q
Fig. .3 shows a similar view to Fig. 2 but witli' tl1ecover of the container open and showlng the holder .replaced and tele'scoped constituting the mouth piece is formed of amber or the like, and is provided with an enlarged end 0 of sufiicient sue to prevent the sections coming apart when the holder is collapsed down so that the mouth piece comes in the center and the sections 6 b and b are surrounding it. r
At the bottom of the box a is a spring lip d and the upper edge of the box is cut away at e for the purpose hereinafter mentioned. The operation will be readily understood.
On opening the box a the cigarette holder is in the collapsed position with the mouth piece section b in the center and with the enlarged portion 0 projecting somewhat.
The mouth piece is pulled upward, the
cut away portion e facilitating the graspand the wall of the box a to hold the said section in position while the tube is being drawn into the extended position, after which on further pulling upon the tube, the section 12 leaves the box a and the tube is ready for use.
Conversely when restoring the tube to the box, the section b is inserted and in order to cause the holder to come into the collapsed position sufficient force has 'to be used to reengage the bottom of the section b betweenv the spring lip d and the casing a. It will be understood that the device may be modified in various ways without departing fromthe V principle of the invention. For instance a different type of. spring means may be provided within the box or casing a for holding the outermost section in position, with sufiicient force to cause the device to be drawn into the extended position as it .leaves the box.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States of America is 1. A device of the character described for receiving the telescopic sections of a holder in collapsed form, comprising a container of greater. diameter than the largest section of.
the holder and having means therein for frictionally engaging said section only of the holder and causing the holder to be brought into extended position simultaneously with the withdrawal thereof from the container, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described for receiving the telescopic sections of a holder in collapsed form, comprising a container of greater diameter than the largest section of the holder and having means therein for frictionally engaging said section only of V the holder and causing the holder to be brought into extended position. sim'ultaneously with the withdrawal thereof from the container, said container having a cut away portion in the upper edge thereof to facilitate the withdrawal of the holder, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a holder and container therefor, in which the holder comprises a plurality of tapering sections adapted to telescope with respect to one another the container with the smallest section coming within the next larger section, and having an enlarged portion thereon projecting above the container, and means within the container for engaging the largest section only of the holder and causing the holder to so that the device can be collapsed withinwhereof I have hereunto
