Application led January 24, 1912, Serial No. 673,046. Renewed July 7, 1915.v Serial No. 38,512.
" Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso,
and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette- Formers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to cigarette formers,
and more particularly to the class of port-.
able cigarette makingV devices.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a cigarette former in which the cigarette paper may be properly shaped and closed at one end to form a Wrapper whereby granulated tobacco may be poured therein for the formation of a cigarette.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein a cigarette may be formed without requiring the rolling of the paper by hand and also avoiding the waste of the tobacco -as is usual.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which tobacco whether granulated or long cut may be packedwithin a wrapper or paper for the production of a cigarette without requiring the hand rolling of the cigarette by a skilled person.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cigarette former which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in Inanufacture.
`With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the wrapper or paper held in position therein prior to the closing of one end of the same by the presser rod or stem. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the presser rod or stem partly extracted. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the presser rod or stem removed and the inner tubepartly extracted from the outer shell or casing. Fig. 4 is a sectional viewon the line 1L-4t of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a slight modification of the device. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the presser rod with the stem removed from the inner tube. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the inner tube partly in section. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a tobacco pouring trough or filling sheet.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawings by numerals the cigarette former or making device comprises a split tubular outer casing or shell 10, the same being formed from sheet metal possessing the requisite rigidity, the split forming a slot 11 throughout the longitudinal extent thereof and opening through opposite ends, and being designed for a purpose hereinafter described. It is of course understood that the shell or casing l() may be made from any other suitable material, and at opposite endsof the slot ll the walls of the casing or shell are rounded as at 12 so as to form slightly flared entrances to the slot so as to permit a cigarette paper or wrapper to freely enter the slot without possibility of the tearing of the same.
Detachably telescoped within the casing or shell 10 is an inner forming tube 13 which may be constructed from metal, paper or other material, and is of greater length than the said casing or shell 10. Adapted to telescope within the inner forme ing tube 13 is a presser rod or stem 14 provided at one end with a finger knob 15, while its opposite end is formed with a ferrule or solid head 16. The finger knob provides an abutment shoulder adapted for contact with one end of the tube 13 to limit the telescoping of the rod or stem within the said tube when the rod is pressed therein.
Adapted to be wrapped about the inner forming tube 13 after the latter has been removed from the shell or casing 10 is a cigarette wrapper or paper 17, one end of the said wrapper or paper 17 being slightly extended beyond the inner end of the tube 13 for permitting the folding or closing of one end, hereinafter described. After the wrapper 17 has been placed about the tube 13 the shell or casing 10 is slipped onto theV tube 13 and the outer longitudinal edge of the said Wrapper or paper 17 is passed through the slot 11 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The protruded longitudinal edge ofthe Wrapper' or paper 17 extending through the slot 11 in the shell-or casing Will permit the easy moistening of the said edge so that it can be sealed when removing the cigarette, after being formed, from the shell or casing. v u
Assuming that the Wrapper or paper 17 has been formed about the inner tube 13 and the shell or casing 10 has been slipped over the same, the end of the paper or Wrapper extending beyond the tube 13 is'folded inwardly ,against the ferrule or solid head 16 of the stem 15 which is pressed against the folded end of the paper by sliding the said stem or rod inwardly Within the'tube 13, the Wrapper or paper 17 being folded at one end as shown in Fig. 3 ofthe drawing. Vhen the Wrapper or paper 17 has been thus formed as hereinbefore described the rod or stem 111, together With the inner tube 13 is extracted from the said Wrapper or paper 17 held Within the said shell or casing 10 and thereafter the tobacco is poured into the said Wrapper or paper When held Within the shell or casing. To firmly pack the tobacco Within the Wrapper or paper 17 held by the shell or casing the rod or stem 14ris removed from the inner tube 13 and forced Within the Wrapper against the tobacco and thereby firmly pack the same Within the said Wrapper or paper. Also the said rod or stem 14 may be used for' tapping the shell or casing 10 during the filling of the Wrapper or paper 17 for causing the tobacco to settle therein after it has been poured Within said Wrapper or paper. After the Wrapper vor paper has been filled with tobacco the rod or stem 14 may be used to force the cigarette from the shell or casing 10, and as the same is gradually pushed from the said shell or casing the free edge protruding from the slot 11 is moistened and pressed against the Wrapper for the sealing of the edge thereto, thus producing a finished cigarette.
In Figs. 5, 6, 7 andV 8 there is shown a slight modification of the invention, wherein there is provided a substantially ovalshaped split outer casing or shell 18, the split therein forming a longitudinal slot 19, in which is passed the loose longitudinal edge of the cigarette paper or Wrapper, when the same has been Wrapped about the ovalshaped inner tube 20, and inserted in the outer shell or casing 19. Normally telescoping Within the inner tube 20 is a presser rod or stem 21 provided at one end with a finger knob 22, the latter being used toform an abutment at its opposite end for the folded closed end of the cigarette Wrapper or paper, and on its removal the same may be usedifor tappingthe outer shell or casing 18 to effect the settling of the tobacco in the wrapper or paper. rEhe manner of use of the derieeis identical tothat shown in Figs; 1, 2, 3 and After the tobacco` has been packed Within the molded cigarette paper, Vthe, same is `removed from the casing, and theloose lon'gi? tudinal edge thereof sealed, thus producing a finished ciragette. Y i
rEhe inner tube 2O is of considerably greater length than the outer shell or casing 18, so that it may be readily and easily extracted therefrom, after the molding of the cigarette in the latter. Y Y
1n F ig. 9 there is shown a sheet 23,pref erably made from tracing cloth, although any other suitable stifi'rmaterial may be used, the same being medially creased,y as at 24:, toprovide a trough-like holder, into which is introduced' the granulated tobacco, so that it may be poured freely therefrom into the casing or shell, thus enabling' the convenient filling of the Wrapper or cigarette paper therein, for the making of the cigarette, Without the possibility of spilling the tobacco during this operation.
7 hat is claimed is Y' 1. A portable cigarette former comprising a split tubiform casing forming a slot longitudinally throughout the extent thereof, the casing at the end edges of the slot being rounded, an inner forming tube of greater length than the casing and adapted to telescope Within the casing whereby a cigarette paper Wrapped upon the tube Will be sus- .tained in its Wrapped condition and its outermost longitudinal edge will protrude through the slot in the easing, and a presser rod detachably inserted Withinthe inner forming tube and adapted to be extracted therefrom on the removal of the tube from the casing for the packing of the tobacco in the Wrapper held Within said casing, the said presser rod when engaged in the inner tube and also When theV latter is inserted Within the casing being designed to act upon one end of the Wrapper for the folding of the same.
2. A portable cigarette former comprisingf a split tubiform casing forming a slot longitudinally throughout the extent thereof, the casing at the end edges of the slot being roundedI` an inner forming tube of greater length than the casingV and adapted to telescope within the casing whereby a cigarette paper WrappedV upon theV tube Will be sustained in its Wrapped condition and its outermost longitudinal edge WillV protrude through the slot in the casing, a presser rod detachably inserted Within theinner forming tube and adapted to be extracted therefrom on the removal of the tube from the casing for the packing of the tobacco in the Wrapper heldy within said casing, the said presser' red. When'engaged in the inner tube and also lWhen the; latter is inserted Within the casing being designed to act upon one end of the Wrapper for the 'folding of the same, and a finger knob formed on the presser rod to provide an abutment shoulder engageable with one end oi' the inner forming tube to limit the sliding movement of the presser rod inwardly Within the tube.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature 1n presence of two Witnesses.
