BOOK HAN AND ADVERTISING- DEVICE.
release.
A olication filed December 3 To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, Fnnnnnion L Ur- KrNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident-of Chicago. in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Hanger and Advertising Devires; and I that the following is a full, clear, and exact reference being had to drawings, and to the characters of ence marked thereon, this specification. i
This invention relates to a novel device having the double function of" anadvertising medium and a book hanger.
The device, made in flt'COlTlZLllCe with my invention, has been developed more pill'tlCU- larly in respect of its function to suspend books which are constantly consulted by the public, such as telephone and like tories; and it is the purpose of the invention to provide an GCOI'lOll'llCLl, simple 7 etlicient hanger for this purpose that is ar rangedto be readily adapted to the barlc bone of: the book in the manner of a clasp so to securely fix it to the book, and is provided with suspending means whereby it maybe suspended from a hook or like support.
In addition to its function as a hanger, the said device is so made as to exhibit a relatively large flap area to receive ar'l -rertising subjectmatter. The device, therefore. becomes attractive asan advertising device to be given away in the manner of premiums or other systems that will bring the device free to the user of a directory or other like book, and serves its purpose to suspend the book and to display the advertising sub ject matter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view tion of a book showing my novel plied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the clasp or hanger in which the invention is embodied, showing it open.
igure 3 is a fragmentary section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective detail showing a modified form of jaw or clasp member.
As shown in the drawings, and referring first to Figures 1, 2 and 3, l0, l0 designate the jaw members of the clasp which are hinged to each other near one end of the dethe accompanyir refei of a pordevice ap- Specification of Letters Patent.
description thereof} which form a part of Patented Maia-28, i922. 1820. Serial No. 428,098.
YllE by a pin 11. The said jaws or clasp inembers'are made of thin flat material, such as sheet metal, in order to adapt one of the aw members to be plared between the leaves of a book near the back thereof, while the other jaw will be displayed along the flat backbone 12 of the book. in order that the jaws of the claspmay be fixed firmly and reliably in place, when adjusted as shown'in Figure 1, with one of the jaw members within the book and the other displayed on the back-bone of the book, the
lower ends of said jaws are "provided with supporting hooks embracing members 13 13 and upturned terminals 14. la. The said jaws are hinged to each other to liein parallel planes so that the supportinghook portions thereof, when thehjaw's are closed upon each other in place on a book, are a'dapted to lie in relatively op{ posingregistry witheach other, with the rip-turned terminalof the hook of one jaw lying against the fiat part oft-he other jaw adjacent said hook, and vice versa, as clearly indicated i'n Figures l and'3. I
The upper ends of the jaw members above the hinged pin 11 are formed to provideinturned members 15, which cross each other at a rather sharp angle in the general manner of the"hinge portionofthc blades of a pair of shears'. In order to provide a suspending member for the clasp, these inturned-portions 15 are continued to form part circular members l6, each of such length that when the device is applied to the back of a book and the lower hook ends are folded one over the other or in registry therewith to support the book, said members l6 overlap at their terminals to constitute a suitably shaped suspending ring or eye designated as a whole by 17.
As shown in said Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, the jaw members 10 are made of equal width. When this practice is followed, each jaw may carry advertising subject matter, with such subject matter displayed on relaively opposing faces of the jaws as is indicated in Figure 2. With this arrangement, it will always be assured that whatever the adjustment of the clasp is to the book, one of the display faces for the advertising will show. Of course if desired, both sides of each jaw member may carry display subject matter. The advertising matter or display matter will be of a color or tone to sharply contrast it with the faces of the jaw members the in turned be made relatively narrower the jaw members flatwise .book. With this cable to make the display member of a width of the clasp. Again, one of the jaw members may be made wider than the other to afford more display space, in which event the jaw member that lies between the pages can consistent with the strength and durability of the device.
In Figure 4, I have shown a modification in which one of the jaw members 18, between supporting hook and hinge, is made considerably wider than its companion jaw member, which latter is not shown in sai figure. In this construction, the wider jaw member is given a quarter twist, so that when the device is in position with one of interleaved with the leaves of the book, the turned portion 19 of the other or display jaw member will lie flatwise against the back-bone of the arrangement, it is practisubstantially the width of the backbone of the book, so as to carry considerably more display or advertising matter.
I claim as my invention:
1. A'bookhanging clasp adapted to be removably fixed to a book back comprising two elongated supporting jaw members provided at one end of the clasp with inturned, overlapping parts that are hinged together in a plane between the jaw members and formedat said end witha hanger, one ofthe jaw members being adapted to-lie interleaved between the leaves of a book, and the other aw member being adapted to lie on and unattached to the back-bone of the book, said jaw members being provided at the ends thereof remote from the hanger with inwardly and upwardly turned, overlaphooks to engage and interlock with the said leaves and back-bone of the book at the bottom thereof, with the upwardly turned part of one of the hooks adapted to lie on the book back-bone and to'overlap the other jaw member above its hook to hold one of the jaw members in place relatively to said back-bone.
2. A book hanging clasp comprising two elongated jaw members hinged together near one end of the clasp, with one of the jaw members adapted to lie interleaved between the leaves of a book, and the other jaw member adapted to lie on, and unattached to, the back-bone of the book, and overlapping, separable, supporting hooks at the r'ree ends of said jaw members at one end of the clasp to cooperate with the jaw members to support a book and to hold one of the jaw members in place on said backbone, the ends of the jaw members at the other end of the clasp being formed with curved portions that overlap to produce a suspending eye.
3. A book hanging clasp comprising two elongated supporting jaw members hinged together near one end, with one of the jaw members adapted to lie interleaved between the leaves ofa book,.and the other jaw member adapted to lie on and the back-bone of the book, said jaw members continuing upwardly beyond their hinge con nection to form curved terminalsthat are olfset irom the planes of the'jaw'members and are adapted to overlap, when the clasp is closed, to constitute at one endof the device closed suspending eye, and book interlocking, overlapping members at the other ends of said jaw members.
4;. A book hanging clasp-comprising two elongated fiat sheet metal jaw members hinged. together near one end of the device, and provided at the other end of the device with book interlocking supporting members, and so constructed that one of the jaw members is adapted-to lie on, but free from,
the back-bone of the book whenthe other jaw member is interleaved between the leaves of the book at the back-bone, and said supporting members being adapted to mutually interlock with each other and the book leaves and back and cooperating with the jaw members when the clasp is closed to support a book.
In witness whereof I claim the foregoing as my invention, 1 hereunto append. my
signature this 30th day of November, 1920.
V FREDERICK A, WATKINS.
