. SUPPLEMENTAL LEAF-ATTACHING DEVICE FOR BOOKS.

This invention relates to an improved supplemental leaf attaching device for books, and has for its primary object to provide a device which may be easily and quick ly applied to a bound book for the purpose of holding one or more sheets or leaves in inserted position therein so that such supplei'nkentary leaves will in effect become a' part of the book itself. It is another important object of the invention to provide an attaching device which is exceedingly simple and therefore, inexpensive in its construction so'that it may be distributed gratis by merchants and others (for insertion by the recipients in a telephone book or other directory or journal for the purpose of advertising the business or merchandise of the giver). In order that such device may have added usefulness and to induce the recipient to use the same in the intended manner, I preferably provide the device with suitable means whereby the book or directorymay be suspended from a wall-hook or nail. By the provision of an article of this kind whereby a number of supplemental leaves bearing difierent advertisements may be inserted into the book, the enormous waste circulation incident to such advertising as now appears in telephone directories and similar journals will be obviated, since ofcourse'the devices will be distributed only to prospective patrons of the advertiser. However, it will be apparent asthis description proceeds that the invention also maybe employed purely for the purpose of adding to the book a number of supplemental leaves bearing printed or written matter relating to the text of the bound book such as criticism or comment thereon or matter of a revisory character.

My invention also has for a further object to provide a device which is so constructed that when applied, the book will naturally open to the place containing the inserted supplemental leaves so that they become conspicuously visible to the reader, but which will not in anyway injure the bound book leaves or interfere with their free manipulation; p

It is also another feature of my present improvements to provide a supplemental leaf-attaching device of the above character which in one embodiment thereof maybe easily and quickly adjusted so as to enable the same to be readily applied tobooks of various sizes.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved supplemental leaiiattaching device .for books and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts as will be hereinafter morefully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and subsequently incorpoated in the subjoined claims. The supplemental leaf attaching device as illustrated in the accompanying drawing may be advantageouslyused' inconneetion with bound books of various kinds, such for instance, as telephone or business directories, catalogues, stock books, inventories, sample books, record books, text books and the like for the purpose of providing either printed or written additions thereto or for providing such books with anindex or additional. memo leaves, for advertising and for various other analogous purposes. In the drawing I have shown abound book 5 which may be provided either with flexible or relatively rigid covers connected by the binding indicated at 6 with the edges of the book leaves 7. At anysuitable place between the book leaves, my present invention. which I shall now describe in detail may be inserted.

In the embodimentillustrated in Fig; 3

of the drawings, the device consists of a suitable length of wire 8, though it will be understood that if desired instead of wire I may form the attaching device from. sheet metal. This member 8 intermediate of its ends is provided with a. laterally projecting. substantially U-shaped bend 9 therein and at one of its ends said member is provided with a loop or eye 10, which in the present instance is produced by properly bending the wire to provide such a loop of the desired size and shape, the extremity of the wire being ang-ularly extended as at 11 in an inward direction and terminating in a reverse bend 12. This end portion 11 of the wire provides a resilient or-spring clamping-hm ger which is adapted for clamping engagement uponthe outer surface of the book binding 6.

At its opposite end the wire 8 is first obliquely bent to provide a short angular portion 13 and the end 14' of the wire is then extended inwardly from the angular portion 13 and corresponds tothe other end portion 11 of the wire, terminating in the reverse bend 15 and adapted for resilient clamping engagement against the outer side of the book binding 6 at the opposite end thereof.

In the present instance, I' show two supplemental leaves 16 which are produced from a single sheet of paper centrally bent or folded around the wire 8 between the hanger loop 10 and the portion 13 thereof so as to enclose said wire. Each leaf is creased to provide a. hinge line 17 spaced inwardly from the bight portion of the bend 9 in the wire whereby said; leaves may be opened out to extend in opposite directions without exposing the loop 9..

The two leaves 1 6 are detachably held in connection with thewi're' 8' by means of a number of fastening clips 18. Two of these clips are preferably placed so as-toembrace the parallel "portions of the bend 9' in the wire as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, while the other two clips are located adjacent the opposite ends of the wire, all of said clips being. arranged between the wire and the hinge lines 17' of the leaves. It will thus be apparent that the supplemental leaves are positively held against any possibility of longitudinal shifting movement with respect to the wire or of turning or swiveling movement as a unit, such swivel.- ing movement being effectively prevented by the U-bend' 9' in thewire.

Preferably though not necessarily, theinserted supplemental sheets lfi-when used for advertising purposes, are of greater weight or thickness than the bound leaves of the book and also are of slight-ly less dimensions than said book leaves.. The device may be readily inserted at any placein t he'book and the supplemental leaves securely attached in position by first engaging. the angular resilient finger 14 on one end of the wire 8 around one end of the book binding 6 and then moving the device inwardly between weasel the book leaves and contracting the hanger loop 10 to a suflicient extent to enable the other end 11 of the wire to be engaged over the opposite end of the book binding. The two fingers 11 and 14 at opposite ends of the attachment exert a frictional clamping pressure against the outer surface of the binding and hold the wire 8 in close parallel; relation with the inner side of said binding and with one side of the loop 10 projecting over the edge of the binding 6. The other end edge of the binding is engaged by the oblique portion 13 of the wire. It will therefore, be readily seen that the supplemental leaves are securely held in place againstrelative shifting movement either as a unit with the wire 8 or independently thereof so that these supplemental leaves will always retain their proper place or position. between thebound leavesof the book. Owing. to the fact that the edges of the supplemental leaves terminate within the marginal edges of the bound book leaves, there is a substantial space or groove provided along'the three edges of'the book when the latter is closed as seen in Fig. 1 so that in opening the book, the finger will naturally engage in one of these grooves. Therefore,. when the book is opened the supplemental or inserted leaves will immediately be conspicuously exposed to view as shown in- Fig, 2 of the drawings, thus displaying the. printed. or written contents thereof.- The loop 10 of the attachment provides a convenient means whereby the book may be suspended from a wall-hook or nail, and owing; to. the construction of the device as above explained, itwill be apparent that the weightof the book. itself will cause the fingers 1'1 and 14 to moretightly grip the book binding and thus retain the supplemental leaves in place- At the same time, neither the bookleaves nor the binding thereof will be in any way injured: by the attachment.

One ofthe prominent uses of my invention is for advertising by merchants and others who have heretofore advertised in directories and similar publications. The rates for such advertising are based upon the circulation, and it is a well known fact that practically ninety percent of the telephone subscribers are not interested in the commodity advertised by a particular advertiser. Therefore, by means of my present invention, a number of advertisements may be printed upon the supplemental sheets, and the devices furnished in desired quantities to such advertisers for free dis tribution to persons who may be. interested in the advertisers business or merchandise. The recipient may then readily insert the supplemental leaves bearing the advertisements in his telephone directory or other book so that the advertisements will be displayed to view every time the book is used. The recipient induced to thus attach the device by reason of the fact that the device itself preserves the book against excessive wear as it also provides a very convenient means for hanging or suspending the book from a wall hook or nail. Thus, it possible to materially reduce the expense of such advertising and at the same time obtain a display of the advertisement to a greater number of prospective patrons.

In Fig. 5 of the drawing I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the device in which instead of providing the relatively short central loop 9 in the wire, the wire may be provided with a relatively long offset portion 9 therein to produce the widely spaced shoulders 9 which are located adjacent to the opposite ends of the supplemental leaves. In this case, only two of the staples or fasteners 18 need be used, said fasteners being located closely adjacent to the shoulders 9 and straddling or embracing the offset 9 at its opposite ends. Also, the wire may be provided in spaced relation to each of the shoulders 9 with an additional bend 19 therein for better engagement with the ends of the book leaves to prevent any possibility of the longitudinal shifting movement of the attachment.

In Fig. 6 of the drawings, I show another form of the device in which the attachment is made in two sections, one of said sections 20 being of tubular form and terminating at one of its ends in the hanger loop 10' and the clamping finger 11 and provided at its other end with the angular oflset bend 9 terminating in the tubular extension 9. The other section 21 of the device has telescoping frictional engagement through the extension 9 and within the tubular part 20 and may be adjusted relative thereto. The outer end of this part 21 is provided with the clamping linger let. The supplemental leaves are applied to the device in the same manner as shown in Fig. 3 as above described. In this construction, it will readily be seen that the parts 20 and 21 can be longitudinally adjusted relative to each other so that the clamping lingers 11 and 14. may

be operatively engaged with hooks of various sizes.

In Fig. 7 of the drawings another construction is illustrated in which the wire 8' is not provided with the offset bend therein as in Fig. 3, but to this wire one or more lugs or extensions 22, preferably of rubber are cemented or otherwise fixed. The sheet for forming the supplemental leaves is engaged around the wire 8 in the manner above explained so that the rubber lugs 22 extend between the wire 8 and the hinge lines of the respective leaves. One or more fasteners 18 of suitable form are then inserted to secure the supplemental leaves upon the attaching wire. If desired, such fasteners may also be inserted through the lug orlugs 22. In this construction I have also shown the clamping fingers at the ends of the attachment provided with soft rubber sleeves 23 so that when the device contacts with the surface of a desk or otherarticle of furniture, it will not mar the surface thereof.

In Fig. 8 of the drawings, another alternative construction is shown which is par ticularly applicable for use in connection with rigid covers or holders for telephone directories and similar publications having a limp or flexible binding. The cover members, not shown, are hingedly connected with the back member, shown at 6, and to the inner face of this back member at one end thereof an L-shaped bracket 24L has one of its arms rigidly fixed. To the other end of said back member 6 a metal plate 25 is secured and to the same a latch plate is hingcdly connected at one of its ends and is provided with a longitudinal slot 27 therein. The attaching member 28 for the supliilemental leaves 16 is pivotally connected at one of its ends as at 29 with the other arm of the bracket 24, said attach ing member having a succession of angular bends 30 therein and provided at its other or free end with a latch lug or lip 31. The sheet providing the supplemental leaves 16 is folded around this attachin member and between the hinge line of the feaves and the fold in the sheet suitable fasteners 32 are inserted at spaced points in close engagement with adjacent angular bends 30 of the attaching member whereby the shifting movement of said sheet with respect to the attaching member is prevented. After the telephone directory or other book has been arranged in the holder, the attaching memher with the supplemental leaves applied thereto is swung upwardly between the leaves of the directory and the free end thereof engaged through the slot 27 in the hinge plate 26. Considerable pressure must be applied against the bound edges of the book leaves in order to engage the attaching member through said slotso that upon release thercof and the expansion of the book leaves, the lip 31 will be forced over one end edge of the slot 27, thereby locking the attaching member to the plate 26.

From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of'the various embodiments of the device as herein described will be readily understood. It will be appreciated that such a device is highly serviceable and convenient in practical use and provides an inexpensive article where by a number of supplemental leaves may be easily attached to or detached from the bound book, as Well as providing an article which will also operate to preserve the book against damage or injury. I have herein shown several constructions of the essential features of my present invention which, however, are to be understood as merely illustrative, since it is apparent that such features of the device might also be exemplified in, numerous other alternative structures. Accordingly, I reserve the privilege of making all such further changes in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

1. An attachable and detachable supplement for bound books, comprising in combination an attaching member adapted to be inserted between the book leaves adjacent the bound edges thereof and having means at its opposite ends for detachable clamping engagement against the outer side of the book binding, a sheet centrally folded and engaged around said attaching member to provide supplemental leaves, each supplemental leaf having a hinge crease therein in spaced parallel relation to said member, fastening means extending through the op posed edge portions of the leaves between said member and the hinge creases, and said member being provided with a laterally projecting part coacting with said folded sheet to prevent swiveling or turning movement of the same upon said attaching member.

2. Means for inserting one or more supplemental leaves in a bound book, comprising an attaching member consisting oi telescopically engaged longitudinally extensible parts adapted to be positioned between the book leaves adjacent the binding thereol, each of said parts at one end being provided with a resilient clamping finger tor detachable clamping engagement against the outer side 01" the book binding at one end thereof and one of said parts being further pro- Vided adjacent said clamping finger with a hanger loop.
