' Application filed November 6, 1920. Serial No. l122,328. i
' To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BARBARA C.' SMITH, a citizen "of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Box Butte and State may be taken, in order to determine the size ofcorsets to be hand.
lAnother purpose is to provide ameasurer Ycomprising a' bust and back measuring tape,
a waist measuring tape and a hip measuring tape Vhaving detachable-snap fastener connections with tapes including the stays therein, extending along the back, sides and hips and in front, from the bust to the groins,
' "so vthat when the-various tapes are detachably fastened according to the vcontour or shape ofthe body, the various measurements for the size of the corset needed may be ascertained.
Itzis tovbe noted that the drawing accompanying this specificationl is more or less arrangement of the parts, and is not'to be strictlyfollowed', as to the various dimen- :sions or proportions ofthe tapes of thebust,
waist and hip line-tapes andthe stay tapes, for-.itis obvious that these parts may be of any suitable o'rfrequisite lengths.
Still another! purpose is the vprovision, of
' means for fastening the bust, waist and hip line tapes around the body, while the other stay tapes are being applied in position, for thepurpose of taking the various measurements.v l A' Whilethe design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed prefer- I able, itis obvious that as aresult'of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the 'invention may Sbesusceptible of changes, and the right to these changesis claimed, provided they are comprehended withinthe scope of what is claimed.r. f f Y `The invention comprises further features landvcombination of parts, as vwill be herein- Specification of Letters Patent.
purchased from the stock onl Patented Feb.
Vafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.-
accordancel with the invenperspectiveview showing thev the measurer, the same being "TNT 'or-FICE l perspective View also showing Y showing the bust, waist and hip line measuring tapes,
and the stay "tapes connected thereto. V
vFigure 4 is an enlarged detail view of the connection between one of thestay tapes 'and the bust tape, showingthe two tapes cony nected detachably.V Y
Figure is a detail view of the modified form of said connection.' v A F igFG is a sectional'view taken on the'line f dferring more especially'tof the drawings,` v: .80 measuring tapes, `whichmay be rvany suitable L y length, and are provided with' graduations 1n inches', as indicated at'fl; Each of these" l, 2 and 3 designate bust, waist and hip line tapes has its ends connected byfmeans ofja suitable fastener 5, such as a bu'cpkle'o'r snap fastener. Each ofthe tapes y1.,2 and 3 lis provided with snap fasteners Varr'anged t g p A spaced 1nterva1s,-for instancejan inch apart', g illustrative, of the general construction and though it is'obvious that ythe fasteners may :5
be located at intervals closer or farther apart.
'lfhese fasteners of the bust, vwaist andfhipl line measuring tapes-maybe either the male or female members, preferablythe" latter, fin.
order to facilitate the y.arrangeinent ofthe` The st'ay tapes 2'y are designedto be disy posed infront, vfrom the `b'ust'to the ,gr-jr'oins,
stay tapes. Y
and on the sidesV from the arm pits toland over]V the waist, and overlie the hips, and also in the inventionis notrto be limitedto any particular lengthof tape.V
.The stay tapes 7 each comprises closely woven fabric materialofH any suitable kind, and each of said'stay tapesf have opposite walls of fabric stitched together as. indicated at 9,' with stays l0 intermediate the'fabric walls vorsides ofv saidv tapes. These stays may be 'constructed of any suitable material, such as bone, steel,"
l whereby a measurer may be afforded for taking measurements for a corset which is relatively stiff but pliable a very short distance below the waist line, with the remaiiiing portion of the hip engaging parts ofthe corset may be relatively flexible and pliable, in fact no stiffening whatever, exceptin that ofthe fabric material. Y
1n some corsets the stays extend to the upperedge of the corset, and in others the stays terminate considerably Vshort ofthe upper edge of the corset, hence itis obvious that the stays in the stay tapes may terminatefanydistance short of the end of the stay tapes,l or adjacent thek terminals of the stay tapes.
The stay tapes are` also provided with graduations in inches as indicated at 12, and arranged on the stay tapes arethe male members 13 of thesnapffasteners, though it is obvious that these male members may bev applied tothe bust, waist and hip line tapes, and the female members to the stay tapes. ta Ves are arranged preferably everyl half inchapart, though it is obvious that they maybe arranged at other intervals. However, the object in .arranging the male members-of the fasteners every half inchapart, isto permit a finer adjustment of the stay tapes .relatively to the bust, Waist and hip lineg tapes.
lul-taking a measurement for a pair of corsets, the corsetiere first places the bust line tape around the customer, from the bust and closely adjacent the arm pits and the' shoulderblades, the customer being obligedtofhold the arms up, in order not tox interfere with proper measurements. The waist line tape is then applied. likewise, the hip. line tape. Certain stay tapes are then placed adjacent the side of the body, from the arm pits to the kwaist line, and down over the hips. The upper ends of saidtapes areconnected to the bust line tape by means of the fastener connections,
the male member entering the female member. Then the tapes at the Vsides are fastened to the waistand hip line tapes.
certain other stay tape hereni especially designated by the numeral '14, and corresponding to one ofthe 'front steels of the corsets, is then applied to the bust, waist The male members` 13 of the stay and hip line tapes, in a manner similar to the application ofthe side stay tapes. The
front stay tape extends from the central portion of the bust downwardly to the waist and overlies the abdomen, as shown clearly in Figure 1. The extreme front stayKVV ltape is lirst connected to the bust` tape, and
the buttoclrssaid tapes being first connectedv to the top tape, and then the waist line tape and then the hip line tape. The intermedi- `ate stay tapes are then fastened in a like manner. After the measurer has been thus applied, the bust, waist and hip line tapes may be unfastened, and the measurer removed and then the corsetire may take the if'arious readings from the measurer and construct a pair of corsets accordingly.
ll'n Figure' -the ends of the stay tapes provided with loops 16 through which the bust line tape extends, therefore, it is.
obvious that the stay tapes may be carried by the bust line tape. and at the same time be connected. thereto by the fastener. Itis obvious that the stay tapes may' be. connected to the waistl and hipv line tapes'in. aV
similar manner, though itis not illustrated.v
In case the construction ofthis kindis used, the loop will be constructed long enough, t0 permit the waist and' hip line tapes to`V be adjusted in approximately vertical directions. Y
While it is herein stated that the stays in the stay tapes ymay be lany dimensions, it has been found preferable touse a. 19 inch stay in the stay tape at the center of tapes immediately below the shoulder blades.
ioo
Vthe' back and a 19 inch stayl in the stay iio v inch stays in the stay tapes under the arms,A while the stay tapes. directly in thefront and from the bust tothe groin may havev stays preferably measuring 12 inches.
The invention having beenvset forth, what is claimed as being useful is Y 1. ln acorsetires measuring device, bust, f'
waist, and hip line measuring tapes having fastener members at spaced intervals thereon, means connecting the ends of each of said tapes when in surrounding relation to the body to be measured, and vertically disposed front measuring tapes having fasteners cooperating with the fasteners of the bust, waist, and hip line tapes and adapted to extend from a point substantially 'be-v tween the breast and terminate adjacent the thighs, vertically arranged tapes connected to the bust, waist and hip line tapes adjustably and extending from points., over the breast down to and terminating below the outer portions of the thighs, measuring tapes having fasteners cooperating with the fasteners ofthe bust, waist and hip line tapes' and adapted to extend from the arm pits and over the hips andterminate a substantial dista-nce below the hips, and additional tapes having fasteners cooperating with the fasteners of the bust, waist and hip line tapes and adapted to be disposed vertically on the sides of the back and to extend from the upper part of the back down to and over the rumps of the body to be measured,V
whereby the body may be measured for corsets to extend a substantial distance over the hips, thighs and rumps, the upper end portions of the vertically disposed measurying tapes having elongated loops through teners cooperating with the fasteners of the` bust, vwaist and hip line tapes and adapted tional tapes having fasteners to extend from a point .substantially between the breast and'terminateadjacent the thighs, vertically arranged tapes connected to the bust, waist and hlp line'tapesv adjustably and extendin from points "over the breast down to an terminating below the outer portions of the thighs, measuring tapes having fasteners cooperatingwith the fasteners of the bust, waist and hip line tapes and adapted to extend from the arm pits and over the hips and terminate a sub-V stantial distance below the hips, and addicooperating with the fasteners of the bust, waist and hip line tapes and adapted to be disposed vertically on the sides of the back and to extend from the upper part ofthe back down to and over the rumps of the body to lbe measured, whereby the body may be measured for corsets to extend a substantial distance overV the hips, thighs and rumps, said vertically disposed measuring tapes having elongated `loops approximating positions adjacent the bust, waist and hips, for the reception of the bust, waist and hip line measuring tapes,
whereby the latter tapes may bev easily adjusted relative to the vertical tapes and vice versa,'without entirely detaching the tapes. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. l
