HANDLE FOR DUSTBANS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed August 10, 1923. Serial No. 656,740.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, HENRY Kmnnnne, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Martins Ferry, county of Bel mont, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Dustpans and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to handles for dust pans and other like articles, and it has for its primary object to provide a handle for such articles which is constructed in its entirety from a single sheet metal blank.
A further object is to provide a sheet metal handle which is strong and durable and which is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a dust pan embodying my improved handle;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of said pan showing the handle in side elevation; and- Figure 3 is an enlarged section of the handle on line 33, Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, the handle constituting this invention comprises upper and lower members, designated generally by the reference characters A and B, disposed in substantially parallel relation and joined at their outer ends by a substantially upright connecting member C. The upper member A forms the handle proper, or that portion which is grasped by the hand of the user of the pan D or other similar article by which the handle is carried, while the lower member B and the connecting member 0 together serve as a brace or support for the outer end of said member A.
Said members A, B and C are formed form a single sheet metal blank. The upper member A is of substantially semi'cylindrical hollow form and consists of a centrally located longitudinally extending panel 1, preferably of fiat form, and opposite downwardly and inwardly curved portions 2, the latter having their edges disposed in substantially meeting relation. Said portions 2 have their outer ends abutting against, or disposed closely adjacent to, the connecting member C, which latter is formed as a downturned extension of said panel 1.
The lower member B comprises a substantially flat panel 3 of approximately even width with the member C of which it forms an angular extension, said strip having opposite lateral edge portions 4: thereof bent inwardly and disposed in closely overlying relation thereto for affording increased rigidity.
A reinforcing rib 5 is preferably pressed in the median line of the panel 3 and may be extended upward into the member C, as shown at 5 Inclined lugs 6 and 7 formed by downturned extensions of the inner ends of the panels 1 and 3 are adapted to be attached to the pan D, as by means of rivets 8.
The handle described possesses great strength and rigidity and is admirably adapted for use on dust pans and like articleswhich are adapted to be held in the hand when in use.
What is claimed is i i 1. A one-piece sheet metal handle for dust pans and the like comprising a hollow upper member consisting of a top panel and opposite lateral ortions extending down wardly and inwardly into substantially meeting relation, a lower member of substantially flat form disposed approximately parallel to said upper member, and a member connecting the outer ends of said upper and lower members.
2. A one-piece sheet metal handle for dust pans and the like comprising a hollow upper member consisting of a top panel 1. posite lateral portions QXiZQIKllHQ downwardly and inwardly into substantially-meetiug relation, a lower member of substantially flatform disposed approximately parallel to said upper member, and a member connecting the outer ends of said upper and lower members, said connec ng member being formed by an extension of the panel of said upper members and having the outer ends of the lateral portions of the latter located closely adjacent thereto, and said lower member constituting an angvlarly disposed extension of said connecting member.
A one-piece sheet metal handle for dust pans and the like comprising a hollow upper member consistin of a top panel and opposite lateral portions extending downwardly and inwardly into substantially meeting relation, a lower member of substantially fiat form disclosed approximately parallel to said upper member and consisting of a panel having its lateral edge portions tu ned inwardinto closely overlying relation thereto, and a member connecting the outer ends of said upper and lower members.
4. A one-piece sheet metal handle for dust pans and the like comprising a hollow upper member consisting of a top panel and opposite lateral portions extending downwardly and inwardly into substantially meeting 10 relation, a lower member of substantially flat form disposed approximately parallel
