Description

J. BUGKLEY HAND, TRUCK. APPLIOATION FILED JULY 26. 1909.
I Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
. firmmnfvr john Ema/sew V f k 4 JOHN BUCKLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAND-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Application filed July 26, 1909. -Seria1No. 509,606.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BUoKLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in trucks, and more particularly to hand trucks as used in freight ware houses, the object of the invention being to provide a truck of improved construction which will be more durable and serviceable than the ordinary truck in common use.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a design in the nose of the truck that the portions of the same will reinforce each other, thus producing a truck nose which will be strong and eflicient yet not heavy and cumbersome.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which the figure is a perspective view of my improved truckin its preferred form.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates the side members of the truck and 2 the handles thereof. Hangers 3 in which the usual wheel axle 4 is journaled are secured to the side members 1. Legs 5 and ordinary cross bars 6 are provided, longitudinally extending metallic bars 7 being socured to said bars to reinforce and protect the same from wear. Iron straps 8 are secured to the side members 1, and underneath the lower ends of these straps the .upper extremities of members 9 are secured,
notches 10 being formed insaid side members to receive said extremities.
The nose of the truck which is the principal novel feature of the present invention comprises the members 9 and a transversely extending plate 11, the latter having a plurality of transversely extending slots 12 to render the plate light without materially reducing its strength. This plate is provided with a continuous bend 13 and with a forwardly extending portion 14; which forms the nose proper, slots 15 similar to the slots 12 being provided in said forwardly extending portion for the same purpose as the slots 12. It will be noted that the bend 13 extends continuously across the nose, thus forming the strongest portion thereof, it being apparent that it is neces sary to make this portion sufficiently strong to resist the severe strains to which it is subjected. The bent portion of the plate is not only formed continuously and unbroken but the thicknessof the material at this point is greater than any other portion of the plate, thus rendering the possibility of breakage very remote with ordinary usage. Downwardly extending lips 16 which engage the top side of one of the cross bars 6, and downwardly extending lips 17 which are secured to the side members 1 are provided, these lips assisting the rivets 18 in holding the nose in position.
The nose may be formed from sheet metal or it may be a forging or casting, the onepiece construction with its parts reinforcing each other making a nose which is stronger and cheaper than the usual construction in which several separate and distinct parts are employed.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a hand truck, side members having hangers secured thereto in which a Wheel axle is journaled, a transversely extending plate secured to said side members, a forwardly extending nose integral with said plate, said plate and said nose having transversely extending substantially rectangular slots, the juncture of said plate and said nose being a continuous unbroken bend, cross bars connecting said side members, and downwardly projecting lips in said plate engaging one of said bars and said side members, substantially as described.
2. In a hand truck, a wooden frame comprising side handle members and cross bars connecting said side members; longitudinal metallic reinforcing strips on said side members and said cross bars, there being notches in said side members under the lower ends adapted to be secured to the sides of said 10 of the reinforcing strips thereon; a transside members, substantially as described. versely extending metallic nose plate having In testimony whereof I have signed my upwardly extending members provided with name to this specification in the presence downwardly bent ends adapted to be se-. of two subscribing witnesses.
cured in said notches; downwardly project- JOHN BUCKLEY. ing lips on said nose plate adapted to take WVitnesses: over one of said cross bars; and downwardly JOSHUA R. H. Por'rs,
extending lips at the sides of said nose plate WV. C. SMITH.
