Description

arch 11, 1924. L486J76 J. A. MCKNIGHT COMBINED HAT LINING'AND BANDEAU Filed nen. s. 1923 INVENTOIL .www
elastic 18 and which has the end terminals' thereof projecting from a slit formed in the body portion of the bandeau, and said end terminals of the elastic 1-8 are indicated at 19, 20, and are tied together, as at 21 for the`purpose of maintaining the elastic 18 in the position to which it has been adjusted, and .by this arrangement it provides for the proper tting of the bandeau to the head. The elastic 18 is dat so that when the bandean is worn it will not cause any inconvenience to the wearer and which would be the cause if the elastic was rounded or cylindrical.
Arranged within the pocket 15 is a loop formed from alength of a spring wire 22, capable of being adjusted to rovide for the bandeau fitting diderent size ats, and which furthermore acts as a means to reinforce the bottom of the bandeau to prevent the gathering or buckling thereof.
The endterminal portions of the wire 22 are indicated at 23, 24, and each terminus of the wire is enlarged, as at 25. The end terminal portions 23, 24, are seated upon each other and are connected together by a coupling sleeve 26 which provides what may be termed a frictional clamp for retaining said end terminal portions 23, 24finv adjusted position relative to each other under normal conditions. When the wire 22 is shifted to increase the length of the end terminals 23, 211, the size of the loop formed by thef wire 22 will be reduced, and when the wire is shifted to decrease the length of the end term'inal portions 23, 24, the size of the loop formed by the wire 22, will be increased, and by this arrangement the bandeau can be made to tit varying sizes of hats.
'lhe combined lining and bandeau is de tachably secured to the crown ofthe hat by the retailer, so, therefore, it is not necessary for themanufacturer to set up a hat with the combined-lining and bandeau sewed therein, or the lining sewed therein, and the bandeau connected in position. ln other wordsfby employing the combined lining and bandeau it does not necessitate the manufacturer settihg up a hat with a lining and sweat band secured therein.
1n Figure l of the drawings, there is shown in dotted lines the crown of a hat as indicated at 27 and detachably secured to the crownl 2?, near the bottom thereof, is the combined linin and bandeau. The means employed for etachably securing the com-I meagre bined lining and bandeau in position consists of a series of spaced bendable staples 28, which are carried bythe lower portion of the bandeau and lining, extendvtherethrough in an outward direction, as Well as projecting outwardly from the inturned portions 13 and 14. Each of the staples 28 is of a length to extend through the crown 27 'and then bent to. engage the outer face thereof, whereby the combined lining and bandeau is secured in position. rl`he staples 28 also act as a means to arrest upward movement of the wire 22 within the pocket 15.
The fiat elastic 18 overcomes the uneasy feelings which are present in the use of elastic of the cylindrical type, and furthermore sets up a binding action of greater area than would be obtained by elastic of the cylindrical type. The combined lining and adjustable bandeau is so constructed as to conform readil to the sizeof the head of. the wearer, as we l as to provide for snugly fitting and overcoming any discomfort when employed, and further enables the retailer to empio the device for hats of diferent'sizes, whic are not provided with linings, and at the same time enables the retailer to adjust the bandeaus so that snug tit will be had on the head of the wearer.
It is thought the many advantages of a combined Alining and adjustable bandeau set up in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that chan es in the details of construction can be ha which will fall within the light of the invention as claimed.
1. An attachment for hats for the purpose set forth, comprising a crown-shaped lining provided with a pocket at its lower end, an adjustable loop formed of spring wire mounted in said pocket, a bandeau arranged within the lining and projected away from the lower portion thereof and provided with means within its upper end for adjusting its size, means for securing the lower end portion of the bandeau and the lower end portion of the lining together, said adjusting means projecting from the bandeau to provide for the adjusting of said means, and a series of independent removable'elements extending through the lower portion of the bandeau and lining in proximity to said loop for detachably securing them in position within the crown of a hat.
2. An"attachment for hats for the pur pose set forth, comprising a crown-shaped lining provided with a pocket at its lower end, an adjustable loop formed of spring vwire mounted in said pocket, a bandeau arprovided with a dat elastic within its upl per end for adjusting its size, means for securing the lower end portion of the banvdea-u and the lower end portion of the lining together, sa-id flat elastic having the end terminal portions thereof projecting from the bandeau to provide for the adjusting of the elastic, and a series of independent removable elements extending through the lower portion of the bandeau and lining in proximity to said loop for i' etachably securing them in position within the crown of a hat.
3. An attachment for hats comprising a crown-shaped lining having an outwardly arranged upturned lower portion to provide a pocket, a bandeau arranged within and projecting from said lining, said bandeau having an upturned lower portion overlapping the upturned lower portion of the lining, said upturned lower portion of the lining providing a pocket, means for securing the lining, bandeau and said upturned portions together, said bandeau having arranged within its upper portion an adjustable flat elastic to vary the size thereof, a loop formed of an adjustable spring wire mounted in said pocket, means overlapping the end terminal portions of said wire for securing it in adjusted position, and removable means for detachably securing the lining and bandeau to and within the crown of a hat.
4. 'An attachment for hats comprising a crown-shaped lining having an outwardlyr arranged upturned lower portion to provide a pocket, a bandeau arranged within and projecting from said lining, said bandeau having han upturned lower portion overlapping the upturned lower portion of the lining, said upturned lower portion of the lining providing a pocket, means for securing the lining, bandeau and said upturned portions together, said bandeau having aranged within its upper portion an adjustable Hat elastic to vary the size thereof, a loop Jformed of an adjustable spring wire mounted in said pocket, means overlapping.
the end terminal portions of said wire for securing it in adjusted position, and a series of independent removable fastener elements extending through the lower portion of said lining bandeau and upturned portions Jfor detachably connecting the same to and within the crown of a hat.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
