Description

April 8, 1941. J. sPoLJARIcl-l I GOGGLES ATTACHMENT FOR HATS OR CAPS Filed July 22, 1940 IN VEN TOR. d-/W v 4350727 @sy s'.
Patented Apr. 8, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GOGGLES ATTACHMENT FOR HATS 0R CAPS John Spoljarich, Painesdale, Mich.
Application July 22, 1940, Serial No. 346,840
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a goggles attachment for miners' hats or caps and which is an improvement on the invention of my U. S. Patent No. 1,832,747 of November 17, 1931. The present invention comprises a guard plate aifording a housing for the goggles when they are in operative position and which is so mounted that the goggles may be drawn therefrom when not in use and may be lifted or adjusted to an idle position from which they may be conveniently returned to operative position when desired.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. l is a side View of a miners hat or cap with the present improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an inside view oi the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the guard plate. a section on line 5 5, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, I2 denotes the body of the hat or cap which may be of any suitable stiff material and which is extended forward to form a visor I3. As shown in the drawing a holder I4 for a miners lamp may be mounted at the front of the hat body I2. I5 denotes a one-piece guardplate provided with lugs I5'f1 through which pass small bolts IB securing said guard-plate in place beneath the visor I3. The guard-plate I5 is bent downward at its end and middle parts so as to afford forwardly opening spaces between said guard-p1ate and visor to receive the connected goggle members I1 when said members are in operative position.
Attached to the outside ends of the members Fig. 5 is Il is an elastic tape or strap I8 passing around to body of the hat or cap. This elastic tape or strap serves to hold the goggle members in working position over the eyes of the wearer, but,
l', being yielding, the said goggle members may be Withdrawn from the forwardly opening spaces or pockets beneath the visor I3 and lifted to an idle position in which they will be held by the elastic tape or strap. The tension of the elastic tape or strap may be regulated by a buckle I9.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the guard-plate I5 serves as a protector for the goggle members when they are in use, but affords forwardly opening spaces or pockets from which said goggle members may be Withdrawn and then raised to an idle position when desired.
I claim:
l. A miners hat or cap having a forwardly extending visor, combined with connected goggle members, a one-piece guard-plate bent downwardly at its ends and middle parts to afford, between said parts and beneath said visor, forwardly opening spaces or pockets for said goggle members, means for securing said guard-plate in place, and means for yieldingly holding said goggle members in said spaces or pockets.
2. A miners hat or cap according to claim 1, in which the means for securing the guard-plate in place comprises lugs on said guard-plate and bolts passing through said lugs and parts of said hat or cap.
JOHN SPOLJARICH.
