This invention relates to hat conformers.

An object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive device of the character described, which may be readily secured to the hat lining, or on the interior of the hat crown, at any desired points, for the purpose of conforming the hat both to the size and shape of the wearers head.

Devices of this character, as heretofore made, have for the most part consisted in a complete bandeau which has been fitted on the interior of the hat crown to occupy the complete periphery thereof, with the result that the bandeau was made to bind all around the wearers head. This construction has been found unsatisfactory, particularly in womens hats Where the peculiar style of hair dress or coiifure requires that the conforming device should be secured at particular points of the hat crown in order to afford effective conforming with sufficient comfort to the wearer.

A dominant. feature of this invention is the provision of a conformin device in the form of a segmental member or section which may be secured to any desired points of the crown so as to extend only for such portion thereof as is required for the purpose of properly conforming the hat to the wearers head depending upon the particular type of hair dress or coiifure.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device which shall be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture, readily attached to the hat crown and efficient in operation to a high degree.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the conforming device shown in Fig. 1 with a portion broken away to show the interior construction; and

Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken along line 33 of Fig. 2.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 indicates the hat body, 11 the hat lining, and 12 the conforming device embodying this invention shown in Fig. 1 as secured to the hat lining. In the form shown in the drawing, this conforming device is shown to comprise a casing 13 of cloth or other flexible fabric or the like suitable material. Held within this casing along the outer periphery thereof is a flexible resilient strip 14 made of thin steel or the like material, and having outwardly projecting spaced prongs 15 and 15, which may, if desired, be formed integral with the member 14. However, in the form shown in the drawing, these prongs are sepa rate members struck up from a sheet of metal 17 fitted over the band 14 at spaced intervals, the metal sheet 17 having its ends inturned as at 17 so as to 'frictionally engage the member 14. These prongs 15 and 15 penetrate the material of the casing so as to extend therefrom for engaging the hat lining and crown when the device is positioned in the hat as will be readily understood. Each end prong 15 is preferably bent over to form a' hook, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. They also may serve to securely fasten the end portions 13 of casing 13 to strip 14, the

latter being confined to the outer portion of the casing 13 within a pocket 18 formed by stitches 16 taken through the material of the casing.

Held within the casing 13 along the inner periphery thereof is an elastic cord 19 which is normally secured to the ends of strip 14- by tying or other suitable means as shown in F 2. Before adjusting the device, the elastic cord 19 which extends through the casing 13 has but one end tied, the other end being left loose so that the device 12 may be brought to the desired adjustment by drawing the cord 19 taut to bow strip 14. lVhen this adjustment is made, the loose end of cushion, the flexibility thereof varying with the extent to 'which the cbidlfi is driiwn out of the easing.
