Description

Nov. 27, 1923 1,475,593
P. O. PETTERSON KITCHEN RANGE WATER HEATER Filed May }0 1923 Patented Nov. 27, 19,23.
entree STATES PER OLOF PETTERSUN, MALMO, SWEDEN.
KITCHEN-RANGE VJATIER HEATER.
Application filed. May 10, 1923. Serial No. 638,119.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Ostra Forstadsgatan 10 C, Malmo,
in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in KitchenRange Water Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in kitchen-range water-heaters comprising a box-like closed boiler extending behind the fire-place and for a greater or shorter distance above the same and under the fire-place and the oven.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a kitchen-range provided with a water-heater according to the present invention. Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line A-B of Figure 2. Figure 2 is a plan of the range. Figure 3 is a vertical section on the line C-D of Figure 2.
The water-heater comprises the horizontal boiler portion 1 known from prior constructions and extending under the fire-place 6 and the oven, further the boiler portion 2 forming the back wall of the fire-place and the ash-pit respectively, and finally the hori zontal boiler portion 3 forming a roof over a portion of the fire-place and extending close under the fire-hearth. The said boiler portions are here joined with one another as usual so as to form a single closed boiler which is connected with a piping at 4 and 5.
For the utilizing of the heat of the escaping flue-gases to the greatest possible extent the lower boiler portion 1 has been provided, according to this invention, on oneside of the fire-place 6 with a portion 7 U-shaped in vertical section and having its legs turned upwardly, and the upper boiler portion 3 has a corresponding U-shaped portion 8 with its legs turned downwardly, the said U-shaped portions alternating with each other but leaving a free passage to the flue-gases above and under and between their legs, so that a zigzag-shaped flue is provided which connects the fire-place with the ordinary chamber 9 located under the lower boiler portion 1 and communicating with the flue-mouth. As is to be seen from the drawing the U- shaped boiler portions are constructed as water-chambers communicating with the other portion of the boiler. Further, the lower boiler portion is, according to this formof embodiment, provided with an as- Be it known that I, PER OLorPErrEnsoN,
cending boiler portion 10 constructed as a water-chamber and forming the wall of the fire-place towards the oven and communicating with the rear boiler portion. The boiler portion 10 forms the fire-bridge of the fire-place towards the oven. Between the boiler portion 10 and the oven there is a space 11 forming the continuation of the ordinary flues 12 to let and 15, 9, 14: respectively. Consequently, the oven is touched by the flue gases even on its fourth side.
The communication between the lines and the chimney-flue is produced by means of a rear flue 16 (Figs. 1 and 2) arranged in such a manner as to join the space 11 on the whole height of same or for a greater portion thereof and passing without sharp edges or angles into a square (or round) outlet turned upwardly. By means of the said rear flue the flue-mouth is thus converted from a long and narrow one in vertical direction into a shape in the horizontal plan corresponding to the cross section of the chimneyflue. By this arrangement the formation of air-pockets injurious to the draught is prevented in the connection between the kitchen-range and the chimney.
By the arrangement described above the heating-surface of the boiler is greatly increased whereby the heat of the escaping flue-gases is better utilized than hitherto, the capacity of the boiler being increased correspondingly.
The kitchen-range itself may be arrangedin different manners as to damper, oven and the like, independently of this invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Kitchen-range watenheaters comprising a closed boiler located at the side of the kitchen-range and extending behind the fireplace and partly above the same and under the fireplace and the oven, said boiler being provided, laterally of the fireplace and be tween the outer wall and the fire-place, with a portion U-shaped in vertical section and having its legs turned upwardly and with a corresponding U-shaped portion having its legs turned downwardly, the said lJ-shaped portions alternating with each other but leaving a free passage to the flue-gases above and under and between the legs, so that a zigzag-shaped flue is provided which con nects the fire-place with a passage located under the boiler and communicating with the flue-mouth.
2. In the water-heater as set forth in claim 1 the boiler being provided with an ascend ing portion between the fire-place and oven and constructed as a water-chamber.
3. A form of the water-heater as set forth in claim 2, a space being provided between the oven and the wall of the fire-place facing the oven, said space connecting a flue passing as usual under the oven with the flue-mouth.
4. A form of the water-heater as set forth in claim 3, a rear flue communicating with said space and extending downwardly so as 15 to join the space on the whole height of same and gradually passing into an upwardly turned outlet.
In, witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
