Description

P. O. PETTERSON WATER HEATER'FOR KITCHEN RANGES Filpd April 16. am
Patented Mar. 25, W24.
PER OLOF PETTERSON, 0F MALMO, SWEDEN.
WATER HEATER FOR KITCHEN RANGES.
Application filed April 16, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PER OLOF PEr'rnnsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resi dent of Ostra Forstadsgatan 10 C, Mahno, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water Heaters for Kitchen Ranges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in kitche11-range water-heaters of the type comprising a box-like closed boiler arranged to extend along one side and the back of the fire-place and having a portion constitut ing a fire-bridge and another portion overhanging the fire-place, passages or openings being provided for the escaping flue gases between said portions.
In order to increase the heating surface in a boiler according to the present invention, the portion of the boiler which extends inwardly above thefireplace, is disposed in close proximity to the top to allow free access of the fire to the opening or openings for the cooking utensils. It is also connected by tubes with the underlying fore portion extending along the fire-place and serves as a fire-bridge, thereby improving the circulation in the boiler and preventing fuel and ashes from obstructing the fine. In order that the tubes may present as great a heating surface as possible while maintaining sufficiently large spaces between them it is found advisable to form said tubes elongated in cross-section with the broad sides running transversely of the fireplace, and furthermore to provide the edges turned against the fire-place with a substantially. wedge-shaped form so that the tubes offer as slight aresistance as possible to the flue-gases.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a kitchen-range, provided with a waterheater according to the present invention. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section on the line ab of Fig. 2 and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the range, the top of the kitchen range being removed. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line ccZ of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 shows on a larger scale a cross-section of some tubes. The water heater, which is connected with a pipe-line comprises the boiler or container 1, 2. In the illustrated form of the invention this boiler runs partly vertically at the side of the fire-place 3 and the ash-pit 1 and partly Serial No. 461,937.
horizontally under the chambers 3, 4 and under the oven. At the back, right in front of the ash-pit and fireplace, the waterheater furthermore forms a waterfilled back-wall of said chamber, said wall being at the top provided with a lateral projection 7, also filled with water and directed inwards'over the fireplace. Said projection is extended at the side of the overlying opening 8 for the cooking utensils, right over the portion 1 of the boiler, so that at a suitable height over said portion it runs to the front of the range, where it is connected with the corresponding portion of the boiler. Said projection and the underlying portion 1 of the boiler, which forms fire bridge over which the fluegases escape in the position of the regulating damper 9 shown in the drawing, are according to the present invention connected by means of substantially vertical tubes 10, arranged one after another in the opening 5 between the two portions of the boiler. Through said tubes, the boiler portion '7 communicates with boiler portion 1 along its entire length, by means of which arrangement a lively circulation in the boiler is attained. For above mentioned reasons the tubes have an elongated cross-section, wedge-shaped at the side turned against the fire-place and rounded at the back in order to prevent the formation of so called air sacks behind the same which airsacks impair the draught. In Fig. 4 the position of the tubes is shown relatively to the direction of the escaping flue-gases, said direction being indicated by means of arrows. On account of the increased heating-surface and improved circulation the capacity of the boiler is greatly increased.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A water-heater for kitchen-ranges comprising, a boiler having vertically arranged front, rear and side walls, an intermediate wall spaced from and in parallelism with said side wall to form a vertical flue ther'- between and a wall for the fire-place, a bottom section extending from said intermediate wall under the fire-place and oven, said bottom section being spaced from the bottom of the range to form a lower horizontal flue, said flue communicating with the vertical flue, a top section connecting said front, rear and side walls and extending over a portion of the lire-place, said intermediate wall terminating a distance from said top section to form an upper horizontal fine for the passage of the products of combustion from the fire-place to the vertical flue, and tubes interposed in the upper horizontal flue between the intermediate wall and top section.
2. A water-heater for kitchen-ranges comprising, a boiler having vertically arranged front, rear and side walls, an intermediate wall spaced from and in parallelism with said side wall to form a vertical flue therebetween and a wall for the fire-place, a bottom section extending from said intermediate wall under the fireplace and oven, said bottom section being spaced from the bot-,
tom of the range to form a lower horizontal flue, said flue communicating with the vertical flue, a top section connecting said front, rear and side walls and extending over a portion of the lire-place, said intcrmediate wall terminating a distance from said top section to form an upper horizontal line for the passage of the products of coinbustion from the lire-place to the vertical flue, and vertically disposed tubes interposed in the upper horizontal flue between the intermediate wall and top section.
A water-heater for kitchen-ranges comprising, a boiler having vertically arranged front, rear and side walls, an intermediate wall spaced from and in parallelism with said side wall to form a vertical flue therebetween and a wall for the fireplace, a bottom section extending from said intermediate wall under the tire-place and oven, said bottom section being spaced from the bottom of the range to form a lower horizontal flue, said. flue communicating with the vertical flue, a top section connecting said front, rear and side walls and extending over a portion of the fire-place, said intermediate wall terminating a distance from said top section to forin an upper horizontal line for the passage of the products of combustion from the lire-place to the vertical line, and vertically disposed tubes interposed in the upper horizontal flue between the interme diate wall and top section, said tubes being substantially wedge shaped in cross section to increase the heating surface and circulation of the boiler. u
4. A water-heater for kitchen-ranges comprising, a boiler having vertically arranged front, rear and side walls, an intermediate wall spaced from and in parallelism with said side wall to form a vertical flue therebetween and a wall for the tire-place, a bottom section extending from said intermediate wall under the lire-place and oven, said bottom section being spaced from the bottom of the range to form a lower horizontal flue, said fine communicatingwith the vertical flue, atop section connecting said front, rear and side walls and extending over a portion of the fire-place, said intermediate wall terminating a distance from saidtop section to form an upper horizontal line for the passage of the products of combustion from the lire-place to the vertical flue, and vertically disposed tubes interposed in the upper horizontal flue between the intermediate wall and top section, said tubes being elongated and substantially wedge shaped in cross section to increase the heating surface and circulation of the boiler.
5. A water-heater for kitchen-ranges comprising, a boiler having vertically arranged front, rear and side walls, an intermediate wall spaced from and in parallelism with said side wall to form a vertical flue therebetween and a wall for the lire-place, a bottom section extending from said intermedi ate wall under the fire-place and oven, said bottom section being spaced from the bottom of the range to form a lower horizontal flue, said flue communicating with the vertical line, a top section connecting said front, rear and side walls and extending over a portion of the fire-place, said intermediate wall terminating a distance from said top section to form an upper horizontal flue for the passage of the products of combustion from the fire-place to the vertical flue, tubes interposed in the upper horizontal flue between the intermediate wall and top section, and a regulating damper for the lowerhori zontal flue. V
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
