JACOBS. BUGKWALTEE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO LEWIS H. SHANK, F ?ARADISE, FENITSYLVANIA.
JAR-CA]? V/RENCH.
Application filed April 18, 1922.
T 0 all whom it away co nccvvt:
Be it known that JAoon S. BUCKWALTER, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvmia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Cap Vvrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to cap wrenches and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the ac ompanying claims. 7
The invention has for its purpose to provide an article of this. character which will securely hold a fruit jar, or other type of jar, for transporting the same from one place to another; or for securing the same with one hand for the purpose of unscrewing the cap of the jar with the other hand.
A further purpose of the invention resides in providing a. jar cap Wrench designed so that it will serve as a support for the cap as the wrench is gripped uniformly 25 on three-equidistant portions whereby it will give uniform gripping on all sides with out liability of crushing the cap or breaking the porcelain lining thereof.
A further purpose of the invention resides in producing an article of this character constructed of a minimum number of parts which may be manufactured at small cost; and which will not require any special skill on the part of the user to operate the same.
The invention is proposed as an improvement over the type of jar cap wrench and jar holder disclosed in my copending application for United States patent, Serial No. 518,842, filed November 30, 1921.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1. is a perspective view showing the ar cap wrench in applied position.
Figure 2 is atop plan view of the jar cap wrench per se, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the construction in further detail the device consists of a body portion Serial No. 554,898.
i formed of a single piece of resilient metal, and having an annularly flanged portion 5 providing a dished or recessed holder adapted to receive the jar cap closure after the manner shown. The member a is centrally cut away as at 6 leaving centrally project- 111g portions 7 that engage with the top or upper surface of the jar closure to properly position the wrench for removing the jar cap or when the device is used as a jar holder.
The extent of contraction of the body portion 4: is determined by the slotted opening 8, and the means for contracting said member l consists of a pair of hand gripping members 9 having depending side portions 10. The side of flanged portions 10 of the members 9 provide an inclosure or recess for the body portion i: and thereby enable the full gripping action of the hand to be applied to the grip when the latter is to be removed from the jar. Said members 9 have overlapping portions 11 and a pivotally connected pin 12, and pivot pins 13 connect both members 9 to the resilient body portion 4 at points adjacent the slotted opening 8 as shown.
The illustration shows a particular embodiment of the invention though it is understood, of course, that the invention may be carried out in other ways, and that therefore the present disclosure is to be considered in an illustrative sense only and not as a limiting one.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An article of the character described comprising a dished body portion constructed of resilient material, and pivotally mounted hand gripping members overlying and connected to said portion for manipulating the same, substantially as set forth.
2. An article of the character described comprising a dished body portion constru ted of resilient metal, and a pair of pivotally mounted hand gripping members overlying and having pivotal connections with said body portion, substantially as set forth.
3. An article of the character described comprising a dished body portion constructed of resilientmetal, a pair of pivotally mounted and recessed hand gripping members overlying and connected to said resilient body portion, substantially as set forth. 4;. An article of the character described 5 comprising a dished body portion c0nstructed of resilient metal, a pair of recessed and pivoted hand gripping members overlying JACOBS. BUGKWAILTIERL
