EDWARD E. HUNTSMAN, Oi THOMAS, WEST VIRGINIA.
JAR-LIF'IING DEVICE.
Application filed May 26, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enwann E. HUNTS- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomas, in the county of Tucker and State of Vest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jar-Lifting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in jar lifters and has particular application to a device whereby hot jars, bottles and the like may be lifted.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of the class described whereby hot jars, bottles, etc, may be lifted without placing the hands in contact with the vessel and which may be readily and quickly applied to the vessel and removed therefrom and which will embody comparatively few parts and these so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.
W'ith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing;
Figure 1 is view in side elevation partially broken away of a ar lifter constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device as applied to a ar with a portion of the jar shown in section.
Fig. 31s a bottom plan view of the lifter.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a metal strip bent to provide a central portion 2, downwardly projecting end portions 3 arranged at right angles to the central portion 9, inwardly extending parts -'l arranged at right angles to the end portions 3 and parallel to the central por tion 2, and downwardly projecting portions Integral with the ends of the downwardly projecting portions 5 and disposed at right angles thereto are plates 6 respectively, while formed in the central portion 2 at the center thereof is an opening 7 alining with an opening 8 formed in a block 9 secured to the outer side of the central portion 2. The downwardly projecting portions 5 are preferably bowed outwardly as at 10 and slidably mounted in the alining' openings 7 and S is a shank 11 having one end disposed Within the outwardly bowed Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. is, 1917.
Serial No. 100,170.
portions 10 and formed with a knob 12 and the other end equipped with a head 13. Surrounding the shank 11 between the head 13 and the block 9 is an expansion spring 14: that acts to hold the knob 12 normally in the bowed portions 10.
In practice, the block 9 is grasped by the hand and the plates 6 inserted in the neck of the jar or bottle. The shank 11 is now depressed against the action of the spring 14: and the knob 12 passes out of the bowed portions 10 and acts upon the downwardly projecting portions 5 to spread the plates so that the outer edges of the latter will engage the neck of the bottle or jar in order that such bottle or jar may be lifted.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, 1 wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a strip of metal bent to form a central portion and downwardly projecting outwardly bowed portions arranged in juxtaposition to each other, plates on the ends of said downwardly priojecting portions and arranged at right angles thereto, a block secured to said central portion and formed with an opening alining with an opening in the central portion, a shank passed through said a-lining openings and having one end equipped with a knob disposed within said outwardly bowed portions and the other end equipped with a head, and a spring surrounding said shank and acting to hold said knob normally within said out-wardlybowed portions whereby said downwardly projecting portions will be held in normal position, said knob acting to spread said downwardly projecting portions to separate said plates in the downward movement of said shank against the action of said spring.
In testimony whereof, I athX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
