specification. j
This invention reiatesio'eard-disp1ay de vices and has for-itsobject the provision of a device of' the character `specified having novel means whereby a number of cards may be exposed in rapid sequence so that the matter on the several cards may be viewed'. p
A furtherl aim of the inventionis to pro- A videnovel means wherebythe cards are support-ed so that the Vcontinued .exp'osureof the same will not weaken' orfcrack the cards or the means of securing the same to the flexible strip, thesaid 'flexible strip Vconstituting an operatingA and supporting means for the cards. n Y A further object is to provide a display device oi.v the ycharacter specified which is of highly simplified construction, i sirnple to opera-te and cheapto manufacture.`
n `.Infthe accompanying drawings forming a part ofA this application andiny which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the Same,
vFigure 1 is an'elevation of the improved display device, the cards being concealed.
Figure 2 is also an elevation of the improved display device, certain of the cards being removed from the casing and one of the cards being in upright position so that the matter thereon may be readily seen.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the improved display device.
Figure 4 is'an elevation of aslightly'modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective illustrating the connecting means for the cards.
Fi re 6 is a detail elevation' illustrating the modified form of the invention.
Figure 7 is a side elevation illustrating a modified form of the invention.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown several preferred .embodiments of the invention the numeral 10 vdesignates a casing which is of elongated formed of cardboard or other suitable material and is reinforced by means of backing the flexible strip v13. necting strips l2() have their ends secured to strips 11 secured behind the front wall of the casing by means of fiaps 12 or other suitable fastening devices. j
As illustrated in vFigurev 3 a continuous flexible strip. 13 of tape or the like is eX- tended about the vfront wally of `the casing and supports a plurality of cards 14 each one of which isprovided with a picture slightly different from the pictures on the adjacent cards, so that as the cards are'rapidly moved' `and exposed to view, the objects applied yto j the severalk cards will appear to move.
The cards 14 are provided with transverse slots IG'at'points spacedfrom their lower ends and the said slots receive the continuous strip 13. The severalfcardsy have their porltions adj acentthe slots 1 6 glued or otherwise f secured to the` continuous strip'13 "so that one card isnot permitted to moveon the strip' and thereby get out of place.A As illustrated in Figure 5 the several cards 14 are joined by avpair of parallelflexible connecting strips 2O arrangedo'n opposite sides of' Of course theconthe'endV cards and the intermediate portions of the connecting strips are preferably glued to the backs of the several cards. The connecting strips 2O ofwhich there are two hold theseveral cards in position with relation to ythe other cards so" that the same may be rapidly exposed vto view. However, the strips 2O do not detract from the appearance of the device as the several strips are secured to the backs of the cards.
In operation the several cards may be withdrawn fromv the casing by pulling down on a finger piece 23 ,formed on member 13.
The severalfcards may be provided withV pictures as illustrated in Figure 2 or with data as illustrated in Figure 4. In Figure 4 the front wall oi the casing may also be provided with data for use in an oflice and the improved display device in that case may be suspended from the wall in any 'suitable manner or supported on the desk;
When all the cards are concealed within.
the casing the finger piece 23 isgrasped and drawn downwardly so that the cards will be quickly exposed in rapid succession. This causes the rapid change of view so that the objects in the picture appear' to move. When it is desired to return the cards to within the casing it is merelyneces'sary to pull upwardly on the finger piece 23 so that the continuous strip 13 will be operated. By
reason of the means employed for connecting the cards to the strip 13 continued use of the device will not break the connection between the cards and the strip.
in the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figure 6 the several cards 30 are provided with transverse slots 31 for the reception oitl a pair of spaced parallel strips A connecting strip 33 ot' any suitable material is glued or otherwise secured to the backs of the cards and forms a ineans for supporting the same.
in the forni oi? the invention ill strated in Fig. 7 the endless strip 4() is trained about a roller or drinn il and about a smaller roller Ll2 rotatably carried by the Vears 453 oi a iraine LM. e The traine la is also provided with a pair of rearwardly projecting brackets 45 which rotatably support the drinn fil. The shaft +15 oit th e drinn inay be provided With a crank fl? by ineans of which the drum niay bc rotated for operating the several cards i8 carried by the endless strip.
iiilith :reference to the foregoing description taken in connection With the accom- )an Yino` drawings it will. be a) )arent that l es a the iniprored display device capable cfa variety of mechanical expressions and it is also understood that the several 'forms of the invention herewith shown and descriliied are to be talien as preferred examples of the saine and that such ininor changes in the arrangement and construction of parts may be nitide as will remain within the spirit ot the invention and the scope oi' what is ilain'ied.
The inventive idea involved in this application n'iay be applied tov motion pictures, card indexes, books, calendars, lists of varions kinds, calculation tables, valentines,
etc., and the device may be made from paper, metal, Celluloid, Wood or other desired Inaterial.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is l. A device oi' the character specified coinprising an elongated casing having its ends open, a continuous strip passed about the front Wall oi' said casing and having a lin ger piece, by means of which the strip may be operated, and a plurality of display cards having their rear portions formed with slots receiving` said endless strip.
Q. A device oit-the character specified coinm prising an elongated casing having its ends open, a continuous strip passed about the front Wall of said casing and having a iinger piece, by n-ieans of which the'stri) may be operated, a plurality of display car i s hav ing their rear portions formed with slots receiving said endless strip, and connecting strips secured'to the rear sides of said cards on opposite sides of said endless strip.
3. A device ot the character specified coniprising an elongated casing having its ends open, a continuous strip passed about the` front Wall of said casing and having a linger piece, by means of which the strip may be operated, a plurality of display cards having their rear portions iornied with slots receiving said endless strip, connecting strips secured to the rear sides of said cards on ppositcsides ot said endless strip,` and a reinforcing member secured to the front Wall of said casing and surrounded by said endless strip, said cards being adapted to be received within said casing.
