Be it known that I, THnoDoRE SMITH, `a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook andV State of'Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Amusement and Advertising Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements inv a'combined amusement and advertising device, the object being to provide an attractive and interesting ldevice of simple andf comparatively inexpenslve construction, for' use as an advertising medium, toy or fan. y

With these objectsin view, the invention consists in a whirling sheet upon which is printed the advertisement or ornamental design, a frame for the sheet and a handle by means of which the sheet may be whirled around at a high rate of speed to provide a,

In these views, 1, `is the frame of the de# vice, which frameis preferably constructed of rods or wire of the proper form to support the sheet and handle. As shown this framek comprises an upright spindle 2, a`

radially extendinoq arm, 3, a vertical post 4,' which is preferably bent into the form of'a U, 5, at its llower end, and a horizontal bar or arm 6. The arm 3, is approximately half as long as the arm 6, thereby bringing the axis of the spindle 2, about midway between the ends of the arm 6. The entire frame may be whirled around the spindle 2,the post 4,

' acting as a sort of weight for assisting the operator to whirl the frame. In the preferred form of construction one end of the horizontal arm 6, is screw threaded as at 7, and screwed into a screw threaded hole 8, in the upper end of the post 4, and a knob, ball or other ornament 9, is placed upon an extension 10, of the post 4, and secured in place thereon, as by upsetting or heading the end of the extension over the ornament. yThe particular form of construction thus far described is immaterial to my invention broadly considered, as any desired form of construction can be substituted for it.

Thespindle 2, carries a handle 11, which is free to turn u on the spindle, but is held against Vlongitu inal movement thereon by any suitable means, the one shown consistving of` a sleeve of rubber V12, which surrounds the lower end of the spindle and rests in a socket 13, formed in the lower end of the handle 11. The frictional engagement' between the spindle and rubber sleeve effectually prevents accidental removal of the handle, and the radial arm 3, limits the movement of the handle in the opposite direction. It is obvious that in place of the rubber sleeve connection, a metal washer may be placed upon the end of the spindle, and the latter headed upon the washer.

The sheet which bears the advertisement, design or other ornament, is seen at 14, and is preferably of rectangular form, two edges 15, 16 of which are secured upon the post 4, a'ndv arm 6, respectively. The connection between the sheet and frame may be made in any suitable manner, as for instance by forming a hem 17, along each edge 15, 16, and slipping the post and arm into the same. I prefer to form a bend 18, upon the distal end ofthe -arm 6, after the sheet has been putl in place upon the arm, said bend being employed to hold the sheet in place upon the arm. Said bend will engage with the hem or it may be forced out through the imaterial, thereby preventing the sheet from being 'pushed back upon the arm.

I prefer to make the sheet out of some light fabric, such as cloth, although it is evident thatany light'` material may be employed. Upon this sheet I print, paint or otherwise affix an advertisement, display, ornamental` design, or other picture. To

makea very e'lective, pleasing and attract ive form of advertisement, the main feature i from it and against the person, while the A of the advertisement is placed adjacent to the post il, and is printed in some very distinct, clear manner, to form a figure or design of strong, sharp vand distinct form. This figure or display is duplicated upon the opposite face of the sheet, immediately behind the figure on the fioiit face, so that when the sheet is turned yaround to present the opposite side toview, the figure will appear on the right hand s-ide of the sheet, the effect-being that when the .device is whirled rapidly around the handle, two pictures will be seen, one being upon the leftlliand side of the sheet and one upoii the rigitl-hand side. To 1malte an effective illusion a second picture B, may be placed upon the right-hand side of t-lie sheet, which picture should be dimmer or of a less distinct'oi' brilliant type than the display A. This picture may also be duplicated upon the opposite face of the sheet, immediately behind the front picture B. lf the device vis, whirled rapidly, the effect will be that the picture B, will disap )ear from view and the display A, will appear upon both sides of the center of the sheet, the sharper, more distinct picture completely overshadowing the less brilliant one. lf the picture or display be placed centrally on the sheet, and

the device whirled around, the picture will remain. visible while the device is being whirled.

ln the form shown in F 4, a flag is rep resent-ed upon the sheet. `When this device is whirled around, the blue ground and stars willL appear on both sides of the center of the sheet, leaving a space between the two images which is lled with red and white bars.

ln the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, a n'uisic box Q0, is shown, which box is mounted upon the handle ll. The spindle of the frame has secured upon it a pinion 21, which drives the operating mechanism 22, of the music box. By holding the handle in the hand and whirling the frame and sheet around, the. operating mechanism 22, will be driven by the pinion 21, which rotates with the spindle of the frame.

ln Fig. 7, a rattle 23, is substituted for the music box, the toothed disk of the rattle 23, being mounted upon the handle and the tongues 25, being mounted upon the arm 3,

' of the frame.

It is obvious that other forms of musical instruments or like devices may be substituted for the music box or rattle, thus forming a very amusing, interesting and a-ttractive device or toy. Furthermore, that various forms of designs, pictures, or advertisements may be placed upon the sheet, or the sheet may be decorated in any artistic inanner and the device used as a fan, the rapid whirling of the device driving the air away sheet itself drags around the hand of the user and agitates the air around the hand, thus having a cooling eli'ect thereon. It should be noticed that the sheet 111-., lies behind tlie handle ll, as seen in Figs. l, 4, 5

.and 7, the effect being that the sheet will maintain a substantially fiat condition, ex cept as it is bowed around the hand, while being whirled in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. lf the sheet is placed on the front side of the handle, the lower edge will curl upward and ina r the effect.

l am aware that various alterations and modifications of this device are possible without `departing from the spirit of my invention, yand l do not therefore desire to liinit 'myself to the yexact forms shown and described, except as may be necessitated by the state of the art.

I claim as new .and desire to secure by ,i Letters Patent l. A whirling sheet, having a display or ornamental design on its face and a centrally located handle therefor lying substantially lwithin the margin of the sheet and around which the whirling element may be whirled. 2. A whirling ornaineiited element, having a centrally located handle lying substantially lwithin .the margin of the element and around Vwhich said element may be whirled.

A whirling display sheet, having a. centrally located handle, lying substantially within the margin of the sheet and around whichsaid sheet may be whirled.

4. A whirling sheet having a display upon one side of its vertical center and a handle for said sheet, .lying substantially within the margin of the sheet and around which said sheet may be whirled.

5. A whirling sheet 'having an ornamented surface and fa display of more pronounced distiiictness, and a centrally located handle for said sheet lying substantially within the margin of the sheet and around which said sheet may be whirled.

6. A whirling sheet, having duplicate oi'- namentations, or displays upon its opposite faces, and a handle for said sheet, lying sub staiitially within the margin of the sheet and around which said sheet may be whirled.

7. A whirling sheet, having a display or ornament on one face at one side of its vertical center .and a duplicate display or oinament upon its opposite face and immediately behind the first named display or ornament, and .a handle for said sheet around which said sli-eet may be whirled.

'8. A whirling sheet, having on one face an ornamental surface and a. more pronounced display or figure located at one side of its vertical center, and a duplicate ornamental surface and a more pronounced display or ligure upon its reverse face, said vsecond named display or ligure being located immediately behind the first named display or figure, and a handle for said sheet around which said sheet may be whirled. e

9. A whirling sheet, a centrally located handle therefor, a spindle rotatably mounted in said handle and connected to one side edge of the sheet.

10. A whirling sheet, having a weighted edge, a handle centrally located with respect to said sheet, and a connection between said handle and sheet which is revolubly mounted in the handle.

11. A whirling sheet, having a weighted edge, a handle, centrally located with respect t0 the sheet, a spindle journaled in said handle and an arm connecting said spindle with the weighted edge.

12. A whirling display sheet, having a weighted edge, a handle centrally located with respect to the sheet, a spindle, in said handle, a rubber sleeve for holding said handle on the spindle and a radial arm connect-- ing the spindle with the weighted edge of the sheet.

13. A whirling sheet havinga space at one side of its vertical center for advertisements or other display matter, a frame for said sheet having a radial arm extending to the center of the sheet and a spindle upon the end of said arm, and a handle revolubly mounted upon said spindle.

14. A whirling sheet having duplicate spaces upon its opposite faces for display advertisements or ornamental designs, and a centrally located handle for whirling said sheet, having an arm extending to one of the edges of the sheet. l

15. A frame for whirling display sheets comprising a post, an arm extendlng at right angles from the upper end of the post, a second arm of approximately one-half the length of the first named arm and extending parallel therewith, and a spindle for a handle upon the end of the second named arm, extending parallel with the post.

16. A frame for whirling display sheets comprising a post, a laterally extending arm threaded in said post, a U bend in the lower end of said post, terminating in a second arm of substantially one-half the length of the irst named arm, and lying parallel therewith, and a spindle for a handle upon the end of the second named arm lying parallel with the post.

17. A handle, a whirling frame revolubly mounted in said handle, a flexible sheet carried by said frame and extending down over the handle and adapted to drag around the hand as the frame is being whirled.

18. In a device of the class described, a whirling frame having a spindle, a handle and a rubber sleeve encircling the end of said spindle and engaging the handle to prevent accidental removal thereof.

19. In a device of the class described, a whirling sheet, a supportingframe therefor and a centrally located handle upon which said frame is revolubly mounted, said sheet being provided with duplicate displays at one side of its vertical center, one of the displays being on one face of the sheet and the other upon the other face and directly behind the other display, whereby, when said sheet is whirled, two displays will appear to be continuously visible.

' 20. In a device of the class described, a whirling sheet and a centrally located handle therefor,vupon which said sheet is revolubly Amounted, said sheet being provided with an ornamental surface, on both faces, and a dis* play of more pronounced distinctness at one side of the vertical center of the sheet, which will appear to be continuously visible at one side of the vertical center when the sheet is whirling' around rapidly.

21. In a device of the class described, a whirling sheet having two displays arranged on opposite sides of its vertical center, one of said displays being of greater distinctness than th'e other, and a centrally located handle upon which said sheet is revolubly mounted, whereby when said sheet is whirled rapidly, the display of greater distinctness will overshadow the one of lesser distinctness and appear to be continuously visible on one side of the vertical center of the sheet.
