DRINK our:
Application filed March 17, 1922. Serial No. 544,399;
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, RAYMOND B. GIL- CHRIST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark,in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drink Mixers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to drink mixers.
In machines for this purpose, the liquid constituents of the drink to be mixed are usually poured into a receptacle which is generally designated a shaker, from many different containers disposed away from the mixer. The receptacle with these constituents therein is brought to the mixer and placed in operative relation thereto and is removed from the machine after each mixing operation to discharge its contents. This is rendered necessary, because so many different ingredients and flavors are used in making drinks that they are, in nearly all cases, mixed individually. It is usually necessary to run the agitator for a considerable period to properly blend or mix the constituents and, therefore, it is desirable that provision be made for retaining the receptacle and agitator in operative relation to permit the dispenser to perform other duties during the mixing operation. In drink mixing, it thus becomes necessary to frequently place the receptacle, containing the constituents, into cooperative relation to the a itator and to withdraw it from the ma- 0 ine to discharge its contents and cleanse the receptacle between mixing operations.
A desideratumin this art is to expediteand simplify the operations necessary to bring the receptacle and agitator into cooperative relation, to maintain them in such relation, in starting and stopping of the motor and the removal of the receptacle. Heretofore, in machines whereof I am aware (excepting those exhibited in concurrently pending applications), it has been necessary in their use to manually manipulate the receptacle into operative position and withdraw it therefrom and to additionally perform some separate step or operation, such as lowering the motor and agitator together. or shifting the agitator and its shaft into the receptacle and relatively to the motor, or raising and looking a receptacle support to establishand maintain cooperative relation of the receptacle and agitater orto control the operation of the machlne. Another desideratum in this art is to simplify the machine bydispensing with movable connections in and for the mechrotation of the liquid with the agitator. It
has also been found desirable to make provision for the withdrawal of the agitator from the liquid before the receptacle passes below the agitator, so that it will cleanse itself by centrifugal force and discharge the adhering material into the receptacle. By producing a vortex whilethe receptacle is being withdrawn, the exit of the agitator from the mixed liquid is facilitated, so that the cleansing operation will occur before the receptacle is completely withdrawn.
One object of the present invention is to provide an improved drink mixer in which these additional operations or steps are dispensed with and in which provision is made for shifting the agitator to cause it to operate' eccentrically while the receptacle is locked inoperative position and thus accelerate the agitation of the liquid and to cause it to operate concentrically in the receptacle while the receptacle is being withdrawn from and shifted into operative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a receptacle controlled machine which is equipped so that the receptacle will be manually manipulated into and out of its operative position and in which the motor is shifted to shift the agitator relatively to the receptacle, as a result of said manual shift.
Other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a machine embodying the invention, parts being shown in elevation, the receptacle carrier being in its lowered position.
Cir
Fig. 2 is a horizontai section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, the receptacle carrier being shown in position to hold the receptacle in operative position. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the receptacle carrier.
T he invention is exemplified in a machine comprising a base 10, usuaily adapted to rest on a counter or table, a supporting standard 9 secured to said base by bolts 8 and an electric motor 7 which is pivotally sustained and connected by screws 13 in arms 9 formed on the upper end of standard 9. An agitator shaft 1, projected downwardiy from and secured to the rotor of the motor 7, is provided at its lower end with an agitator 12 of suitable construction, as well understood in the art. Shaft 11 has fixed relation to the rotor of the motor 8., thus avoiding a sliding connection for per initting the agitator to he raised and lowered into the receptacle 19 which contains the material to be IDiXGCl. There is sur'hcient clearancehelow and around the agitator permit thereceptacle to be pieced into operatire position from below without moving the agitator. An upper arm 23 and a lower arm 24 rigid with the carrier-standardfil extend rearwardly through a slot 26 in front of standard 5 and are notched, as at 27, to fit around the sides of said slot and slidably guide the upper and lower portions or the carrier. Lugs 30, projecting laterally from the upper arm 23 and rigid thereon, are adapted to engage-notches 31 in the rear races of the Walls forming the sides of the slot 26 to loci; the carrier and the receptacie in operative relation to the agitator.
A lever 'has its upper end rigidly secured to the casing of the motor 7 and is provided with an elongated verticaliy extending slot as in which operates a stud or roller 3? which is carried at the rear end of the upper carrier arm 23. This connection between carrier and the motor is adapted oclr the motor to shift the agitator into r nt positions While the receprnenuai transit toand from its position. The pivotai connection QHlUilfiiCi by screws 13 hetweethe motor one standard Q is disposed forwardly center of the motor so that it viii he a tendency to swing the agitator l2 lever-arm iorwardiy. naoaesa the bottom of the receptacle on or over support 2-2 it being understood that the heel; is formed with sufiicient clearance to permit the angular insertion of the receptacle into the hook. This will cause the receptacle to be locked to the carrier so that the latter will be operable upwardly and downwardly by the receptacle.' The operator will manually raise the receptacle until it reaches its operative position around the agitator 12. In transit to said position, stud 37, acting upon cam-portion 44 of slot 43, will shift the switch-lever 40 relatively to the arm 35 and cause it to pull the switch-button i8 downwardly to close the switch and start the motor 7. As the receptacle reaches its operative position around the agitator, lugs 30 will rea h notches 31. Off-center weight of motor 7, acting through lever-arm 35, will press stud 37 forwardly. causing in 30' to pass into notches 31 and thus lock the carrier and receptacle in their operative position. In efiecting forward movement of the upper end of the carrier to lock it, stud 37 i will swing lever-arm 35 and the motor about its fulcrum 13 and cause the agitator to be positioned eccentrically in the receptacle.
In such position, the agitator will operate effectively in the contents of the receptacle. When the mixing operation has been completed, the operator will grasp the receptacleand push its upper end rearwardly against the oil-center weight. of the motor and leverarm 35 to withdraw lugs 30 from notches 31 and release the carrier and receptacle so they can be lowered. This backward movement of the upper portion of the carrier will cause stud 37 to swing motor 7, so that the agitator 12 will be'disposed in substantially concentric position in the receptacle during its withdrawal. By shifting the agitator to this concentric position. a vortex will be produced while it is still rotating. As a result. the withdrawal of the agitator from the liquid will be expedited and it will centrifugally cleanse itself while the receptacle is still in position to catch the material thrown off by the agitator. During the manual lowering of the receptacle, stud 37 will shift the lower end of switch-lever 40 forwardly about its pivot 41 on lever-arm 45 and cause its upper end 42 to push the switch-button 16 upwardly and open the switch to stop the motor.
The invention exemplifies a drink mixer in which the motor carrying the agitator is shiftable by the receptacle; in which a re-.
celptacle is locked in and operates a carrier w 1Cl] shifts the motor and agitator; in which the agitator shifted transversely to operate eccentrically in the receptacle dur-' ing the mixing operation and more nearly concentrically during placement or removal of the receptacle into its operative position; in which the motor is suspended in ofiZcenter driven by and secured to rotate direct relation to automatically retain the locking means "for the receptacle-carrier in operative relation; and which is simple in construction.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. I
