Be it known that I, RAYMOND B. GIL- CHRIsT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, inthe county of Es- 5 sex and State of New Jersey, havev invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drink Mixers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to drink mixers. In machines for this purpose, the liquid constituents of the drink to be mixed are usually poured into a receptacle which is generally designated a shaken from many different containers disposed away from the '15 mixer. The receptacle, with these constituents therein, is brought to the mixer and placed in operative relation thereto and is removed from the machine after each mixing operation to discharge its contents. This is rendered necessary, because so many different ingredients and flavors are used in making drinks that they are, in nearly all cases, mixed individually. It is usuall necessary to run the agitator for a consi erable period to properly blend or mix the constituents and, therefore, it is desirable that provision be made for retaining the.
1 receptacle and agitator in operative relation to permit the dispenser to perform other duties during the mixing operation. In drink mixing, it thus becomes necessary to frequently place the receptacle conta-ining the constituents into cooperative relation to the agitator and to withdrawit from the machine todischarge its contents and cleanse the 'receptacle between, mixing operations. l
A desideratum in this art is to expedite and simplify the. operations necessary to t0 bring the receptacle and agitator into cooperative relation, to maintain them in such relation, in starting and stopping-'the motor, and in the removal of the receptacle to avoid the necessityof manually manipulating the receptacle into operative position and withdrawing it .therefrom and toadditionally perform some separate step-or op.'-

The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

The invention is exemplified in a machine comprising an electric motor 8 which is supported at the upper end of a2 standard 9 which isl channelled in cross-section and.

Its lower end is rigid with a base 10 which is usually adapted to rest on a counter or table. A shaft 11 secured to the rotor of the motor projects downwardly from fthe motor case and is provided at its lower end with a suitable agitator 12 for mixing the constituents of a drink, as well understood in the art. Shaft 11 is of sufficient length so that the agitator may be disposed in the constituents of a drink to be mixed' near the bottom of an open-topped receptacle 19 held below the motor and containing said constituents. There is sufficient clearance below the agitator to permit the receptacle 19 to be placed beneath and around the agitator without spilling its contents and without the necessity of lowering the agitator into the receptacle. In the present invention the relationship between the agitator and the motor or between the agitator and the -base are not varied and the receptacle only is manipulated in establishing cooperative relationship between the receptacle and the agitator so that movement of the agitator or the agitator and motor are not necessary for this purpose. The case of the motor 8 is rigidly secured by screws 13 to lugs 14 which are integral with the upper end of the standard. A case 15, containing an electricalswitch-of usual construction and having its members connected to control the motor 8, is fixedly secured to the outside of the motor-casing of the motor. A springpressed button 16 operates the switch in the case 15 to close the circuit and causethe motor 8 to run while the button is pushed upwardly and to open said circuit to stop the motor when the button is released. The switch-members in the case 15 may be of standard construction, as well understood in thefart, so that detailed illustration has not been deemed necessary. A pair of yielding contact-strips 16a, adapted to enter a switchsocket of usual construction, project rearwardly from thel case 15, so -thatithe necessary electrical connections to supply current to the motor will be made by pushing an ordinary conductor socket which is adapted to receive said contact-strips and is connected by a iiexible cord conductor to a suitable source of energy, into connected relation with said strips.-
The lower portion of the standard 9 is provided with a backwardly and upwardly sloping or inclined front face 14 which is arcuate in cross section, conformably to the periphery of the receptacle to form a guideway or surface over which the receptacle will freely slide in its movement to and from its operative position around the agitator. A slot 15 is formed in the standard 9 above the guideway 14` to form a guideway or track for a slidable holder 16'. The sides of holder 16' are formed with grooves 18 to receive the margins of the slot 15 and slidably retain the holder in the standard. This holder is slidable to guide the upper end of the receptacle while it is raised into and lowered from its operative position, so that the receptacle cannot strike the agitator while it is being placed into and removed from its operative position. This holder is also adapted to lock the upper portion of the receptacle while it is supported in operative position. For these purposes, the holder 16' is formed with an arcuate groove 18' conforming transversely to the wall of the receptacle, adapted to receive one side of the upper margin or rim of the receptacle and hold it locked 'against lateral movement in any direction. In front of the groove 18', the holder is provided with a hook or member 17 which is adapted to extend into the upper portion of the receptacle at one side thereof and to engage its inner periphery. The upper portion 2() of the rear face and the lower portion 20a of the front face of groove 18' are inclined upwardly and rearwardly to permit limited tilting of the receptacle when its lower end is free in effecting the removal of the receptacle from the groove and to permit its insertion therein'. The lower portion 21 of the back face below inclined portion 20 and the upper vertical portion 20' of the front face of groove 18' are disposed to cooperate and lock the receptacle when it is supported from'below in its vertical and operative position. The lower portions of the faces of the groove 20 are flared to direct the upper rim of the receptacle into the groove. By forming the faces of the groove so that only a limited movement. of the receptacle is possible. the
latter will be secured, so that it cannot be tilted into position to cause it to strike the agitator during its insertion and removal. Holder 16' will be automatically raised by the receptacle and lowered therewith. At
the upper end of guide 14, aledge 22 with' an arcuate back 22a conforming to the peripheryof the receptacle, is provided to form a rest or seat for the lower rim of the receptacle, and a rearwardly and downwardly inclined Shoulder 22h, adapted to engage the inner edge of the lower rim of the receptacle, is adapted to hold the lower rim of the receptacle on said seat and so that, when the upper portion of the receptacle is locked in the holder 16', the entire receptaclewill be securely locked in operative position.

By continuing the lowering oil the receptacle after the holder i6 has been arrested, the upper rim of the receptacle will he withdrawn from the holder and released :for withdrawal from the machine. 4 The invention enempliiies a machine oi the character described, in which the upper rim oi vessel is positively guided while it is manually shiited into and out of operative position; in which the receptacle will loe secured and guided so that will not strilre the agitator while it is being placed into and removed rfrom operative position; in which the recorte-le is adapt-ed by its own manipulation to he locked and released from its operative position; in which the receptacle positively operates switch-lever to control the operation oi the in which the supporting standard or column and the receptacle guide and a stationary member el the automatic receptacle-guidingmeans are termed integrally, which materially simpliiies the construction, and avoids the necessity and cost-oi5 a column which is separate from the stationary-support and guide; and which is simple in construction.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modied within the scope of the appended claims, without depar tmg from the spirit and scope of the invention. .Having thus described the inventlon, what l claiml as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. ln a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor', an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with sufcient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative postion'around the agitator, and vertically movable means to engage the upper marginof the receptable and hold. 1t while it is being manually shifted. p

3. In a machine ofthe character described, the combinationv of a motor,y an agitator driven `thereby and supported from above with suflcient clearance to permit a receptacle with an opuentop tobe placed into oper- Sil ative position around the agitator, and a vertically movable holder ada ted to engage the inner and outer -sides of t e upper portion of the receptacle.
4. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above, the agitator being supported with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator, and a vertically movable holder for and shiftable by the receptacle, provided with means to permit limited pivotal movement of the receptacle in the holder. 5. In amachine of the character described,
the combination of a motor, an agitator` driven thereby and supported from above, with a suiiicient clearance to permita receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator, and a holder movable by the receptacle and formed to straddle one side-portion of the upper rim of the receptacle.

In a machine ofthe character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with suliicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator, a vertically movable holder for the upper margin of th'e receptacle, and a stationary guide for the lower portion of the receptacle.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with suiicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around it, a vertically movable holder adapted to be engaged and shifted by the upper rim of the receptacle, and a coacting support for the bottom of the receptacle to hold the receptacle in operative position.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with suicient clearance to permit a receptaclewith an open top to be placed into operative position around it, a vertically movable holder having a groove therein to receive the upper margin of the receptacle, and
a coacting bottom, support to hold the receptacle in operative position.

In amachine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agltator driven thereby and supported from above withsutlicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an.open top to be placed into operative positionaround it, a vertically movable holder` adapted to be engaged and shift-ed by the upper rim of the receptacle, and a coacting stationary bottom support disposed to hold the receptacle in operative position.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator, and a vertically slidable holder adapted to be engaged and shifted by the top rim of the receptacle and to guide the receptacle into operative position, While it is manually supported.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with suiicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be raised into operative position around the agitator, and a vertically slidable holder having a groove to receive the top rim of the receptacle and a cooperating bottom support for the receptac e.
12. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported Jfrom above with sufficient clearance below to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator, a vertically movable holder adapted to be shifted by and to guide the receptacle, and a cooperating support to lock the receptacle in its operat-ive position, said holder and support permitting the receptacle to be automatically locked and released by its own manual manipulation.
13. In a machine of the character described, vthe combination of an electric motor, a support for said motor, an agitator driven by the motor and supported from above to rotate at a substantially iixed point relatively to the motor and with sufiicient, clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be raised around the agitator and manually placed into its position, means to automatically retain the receptacle upon its placement into such position comprising 'a movable member shiftable by the receptacle, and a switch for controlling the motor,
operated by the receptacle to start the motor.
14. In a machine of the character described, the combination of an electric motor, a support for said motor, an agitator driven by the motor and supported from above to rotate at a substantially fixed point relatively to thel motor and with suiicient clearance to permit areceptacle with an open top to be raised around the agitator and manually placed into its position, means to automatically retain the receptacle upon its placement into such position comprising a substantially stationary member and a movable member shift-able by the receptacle, and a switch for controlling thel motor, operated by the receptacle to start the motor.
15. In a machine of the charac-ter described, the combination of an electric motor, a support for said motor, an agitator driven by the motor and supported from above to rotate at a substantially fixed point relatively to the motor and with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be raised around the'agitator and manually placed into its position, means to automatically 4retain the receptacle upon its placement into such position comprising a member shiftable by the receptacle, and a switch for controlling the motor, operated to start, the motor by the receptacle through the shiftof said movable member.
17. In a machine. of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with sufficient-clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator from below, means to automatically lock the receptacle in operative position when it has been manually shifted to such position, comprising a holder adapted to be engaged and shifted by the upper portion of the receptacle, and means for controlling the operation of the motor comprising a lever operated by said holder.

In a machine of the character described. the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator from below, means to automatically lock the receptacle in operative positon when it has been manually shifted to such position, comprising a holder adapted to be engaged and shifted by the upper portion of the receptacle, and means for controlling the operation ofthe motor comprising a lever operated by said holder, the lever having a stop for the holder.
19. In a machine of the character described` the-combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above with suiicient clearance to permit a. receptacle with an Open top to be raised into operative vposition around the agitator, a
, movable holder adapted to be engaged bythe upper portion of the receptacle, and means for controlling the operation of the motor comprising a pivoted lever having a sliding connection with and operated by said holder.

In a machine of the character'described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above, the agitator being Asupported with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top Vto be raised into operative position around the agitator from below, and means to automatically lock the receptacle in operative position when it has been manually shifted to such position, comprising a vertically movable holder adapted to be raised by the receptacle and to hold the up er portion thereof.
21. n a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supported from above, the agitator being supported with suliicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be raisedv into operative position around the agitator from below, and means to automatically lock the rreceptacle in operative position when it has been manually shifted to such position, comprising a vertically slidable holder adapted to be raised by the receptacle and to hold the upper portion thereof.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, an agitator driven thereby and supportedy from above, the agitator being supported with sutlicientclearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be raised into operative position around the agitator from below, and means to guide the receptacle and automatically lock it in operative position when it is manually shifted to such position, comprising a vertically slidable holder adapted to be raised by the receptacle and to hold and guide the upper portion thereof.

an agitator driven thereby and mounted in i'iXed relation to the motor with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top `to be manually placed into its operative position around the agitator `from below, and means to automatically hold the receptacle upon its manual placement into its operative position comprising a vertically movable member operated by the manual shift ofthe receptacle.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of an electric motor, an agitator driven thereby and mounted in fixed relation to the motor with sucient clearance to permit a receptacle`with an open top to be manually placed into its operativeposition around the a 'tator from below, and means to automatica y hold the receptacle upon its manual placement into its operative position comprising a vertically movable member shifted by 'the upper portion of the receptacle upon its manual placement into the holding means and a member to extend under the receptacle.
25. ln a machine of the character described, the combination of an electric motor, an agitator driven thereby and mounted in fixed relation to the motor with suiiicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be manually placed into its operative position around the agitator from below, and means to automatically hold the receptacle upon its manual placement into its operative position comprising a hook movable vertically by the manual shift of the receptacle.

In a' machine of the character described, the combination of an electric motor, an agitator driven thereby and mounted in fixed relation to the motor with suicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be manually placed into its operative position around the agitator from below, and means to automatically hold the receptacle upon its manual placement into. its operative position comprising a vertically movable member operated by the manual shift of the receptacle, a switch for controlling the electric motor, and means for actuating the switch by the manual shift of the receptacle.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of an electrif1 motor, an agitator driven thereby and mounted in fixed relation to the motor with suiiicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be manually .placed into its operative position around the agitator from below, means to automatically hold the receptacle upon its manual placement into its operative position comprising a vertically movable member operated by the manual shift of the receptacle, a switch for controlling the electric motor,
and means for actuatingthe switch by the manual shift of the receptaclel before it reaches its operative position.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a motor, a standard to the upper end of which the motor is secured, an agitator driven by the motor and supported from above with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be placed into operative position around the agitator, means to secure the receptacle in operative position, and a guideway for the receptacle while it is being manually shifted, formed on the front of the standard.
30. In a machine of the character described, the combination of an electric motor, a supporting column to the upper end of which the motor is secured, an agitator driven by the motor and supported from above with suflicient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be manually placedv into position around the agitator from below, means to automatically hold the receptacle` upon its placement into its operative position, and a receptacle guide integral with said column.
31. In a machine of the character described, the combination of an electric motor, a supporting column to the lupper end of which the motor is secured, an agitator driven by the motor and supported from above with sufficient clearance to permit a receptacle with an open top to be manually placed into position around the agitator from below, means to automatically hold the receptacle upon its placement into its operative position comprising a member integral with said column, and a receptacle guide integral with said column.
32. In a machine of the character described, the combination of an electric motor, a supporting column tol the upper end of vwhich the motor is secured, an agitator driven by the motor and supported from above with suilicient clearance to per` mit a receptacle with an open top to be manually placed into position around the agitator from below, and means'to automatically hold the receptacle upon its manual placement into its operative position comprising a vertically movable member shiftable by the upper portion of the receptacle and mounted directly in said column.
