Appiieaiion inea November 4, 1921. sei-iai No. 512,935;
\ proved'toilet article, but, has more specific reference to one which may beconve'niently termed a hair dressers comb.
The principal object of the invention is vto generally improve upon articles of this class byproviding a comb `having a handle to permit it to be conveniently manipulated, together with anattachment for cooperation with the back of the` comb to permit lthe-'hair to be passed between the back and attachment and then through the teeth for straightening it preparatory to dressing it.
More speciically speaking, it is another vobject of the invention toprovide a pivy-otally mounted detachable presser bar for `use in connection with a comb, the bar and comb both being composed of metal to permit them to be preheated sogas kto more effectively act on the hair when putting it fin condition for dressing.
The various features and advantages of the invention will become apparent by reading the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification ande-invwhich like numerals are employed tofdesignate like parts throughout the samen. Y y
Figure 1 is a side .elevation of a hair dressers comb constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the y dle to maintain the laterallydirected outer presser bar. i
Figure 3 isa perspective view of the comb With the bar detached.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the comb. Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the fulcrum bracket. y
In carryingout the invention, I employ a metallic comb lhaving a flat faced back 2 and a plurality of closely spaced teeth 3 between which the hair isy drawn in the usual manner. It is to be noted that the upper face j of the back 2 is flat as i'ndicatedat 4 for a purpose to bel hereinafter specified. For convenience of manipulation, the back is eX- tended beyond the teeth as indicated at 5 to rwith the handle as shown.y
can be removed n the presser bar could be constructed otherit has itsouter enddowntur-ned vasinprovide a handle. Inasmuch asthe comb is intended to it is desirable to prevent burning of the op# E STME kPANTllflVl" 'OFFICE lONE-HALF To WILT be heated before being used,
erators ngers. Therefore, a sectional hand` 'l grip 6 of insulation" material is connected Vhile onfthis handle, it may be mentioned that litis equipped adjacent the teeth with a transverse slot 7 and Witha screw this slot. As is obvious, the laterally directed lower end 10y of a fulcrum bracket 9l y threaded hole 8 which extends through its bottom' and into is intended to be inserted in this slot and ingopening 13 formed on the intermediate mentioned here thatthe presser bar. is `read- `held therein by means of a set screw 11 rwhich is screwed against it. It is to be notedthaty the upper end of the bracket 9 is cylindrical and tapered as indicated at 12 and this provides a journal which is rotatable in a b`ear-` ily detachable 'frointhis journaly so that rit i when desired." `Although wise dicated at 15 a'ndthis downturned end rests against the flat face 4l*I of the back of the combv when'thebar is in use. vBy directing this endy C i of the bar downwardly as shown 'and spacing the journal of the fulcrum bracket above the back of the fcomb,a space isprovidedbetweenfthebar and 'said back to permit they hair to be drawn therethrough. Referring nowto .the` opposite end-,lof ythe presserrbar.'
it will be seelthat the'fportion inward of* the aforesaid bearing is` directed slightly' upward 'to provide a finger-piece 16. In practice a suitable spring 17 is interposed between the finger-piece and aforesaid hanend of vthe presser bar in contact with the back of the comb and to maintain the bar.
and as soon as it is released, it comes into back of the combby pressing downwardly On the i'inger piece,
the teeth of the comb 1n engagement with the hair and compresses it A slightly between itself and the flat tace of the hack of the comb. Hence, it is obvious that when the comb is now drawn further through the hair, the latter is straightened 'and acted on through the medium ot' the heated parts to place the hair in good condition to enable the hair dresser to Work expeditiously With the help of this device. rFhe invention is particularly advantageous for untangling the hair due to the Yfact that the hair and placing' it in good condition preparatory to dressing it. The several parts are separable as intimated so that the device may be used with or without the presser means. Also, due to the extreme simplicity of the invention, it is rendered comparativelyl inexpensive to both 'the manufacturer and the user. These and other advantages and features ol the invention have doubtless been made apparent and a more lengthy description is therefore deemed unnecessary.
By. carefully consideringr the description in connection with the drawings, persons familiar with devices of this class Will doubtless be able to kobtain a clear understanding of the invention. Therefore, a morelengthy and detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
Since probably the'y best results may be obtained With the construction and arrangef ment herein shown and described, this is taken as the preferred embodiment of the invention. Howeven I wish it to be under-I Stoodthat minor changes ,coming Within the y having' its back extended to form scope of the invention as claimed may be resorted to if desired.
I claim:
l. In a hair dressers appliance, a comb having a handle, and a presserbar pivotally mounted upon the handle and spaced from the back of the comb to provide a space through Which the hair is drawn.
2. In a hair dressers appliance, a comb having itsback extended to provide a handle, a bracket supported on said handle and provided with a journal, and a bar spaced from the back ot the comb ior pressing the hair against the back, said bar being provided With a bearing' opening receiving said journal.
3. In a hair dressers appliance of the type specified, a comb, a presser bar associated with and spaced slightly trom'the back oi the comb, said bar having a finger piece, and means ttor pivotally connecting rthe bar with the comb and spacingv the tormer from the back of the latter.
fl. ln a hair dressers appliance, a comb having' a slotted extension, a bracket having;- a portion received in the slot of said extension, said bracket includinga journal,
and a spring pressed presser bar associated with the back olf thecomb, saidbar having" a bearing opening,r in which said journal is received.
5. ln a hair dressers appliance, a comb a handle, said handlebeingY Y teeth with a transverse slot, a bracket havingr itslaterally directed lovverend received in said slot, said bracket including a journal extending over the back of the comb in spaced relation, and a presser bar spaced above the back and equippedivith a bearing opening in which the journal is received.
