Description

No. 853,34 PATENTED MAY 14,1907. G. w. FIELDS.
HAIR STRAIGHTENING DEVICE. I APPLIGLTIOH FILED 00128, 1906.
GEORGE WASHINGTON FIELDS, OF' CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAIR-STRAIGHTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed October 8, 1906. Serial No. 337,969.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON FIELDs, a citizen of the United States, re-- siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hair-Straightening Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair-straightening devices, and it is more particularly an instrument designed to take the kinks or curls out of hair that is naturally closely curled and to straighten this kind of hair by means of heat and pressure applied thereto, and also by combing out with the instrument.
Another object is to provide an instrument of the class referred to, that is light, eflicient and durable and that can be operated with out an assistant.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel arrange ment and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims. 4
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22. Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 3 is thehandle which may be of any preferred form but in this case the handle is composed of an upper and lower portion held together by a pivot and provided with a spring 4, for pressing the engaged extremities of the handle toward each other and so holding the device in a closed position.
5, 5 represent two plates or sections similarly shaped and provided with a flat smooth exterior surface. Toward the rear end of each plate is secured one of the prongs of the handle. The forward end of each plate is made thin as shown at 5 for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The adjacent surfaces of the two plates or sections 5, 5 of the instrument are fluted or formed in ridges near their forward extremities as shown at 6 thus giving these surfaces an undulating character throughout the rigid portion. These .undulating surfaces are preferably so formed that the ridges of the one rest in the depressions of the other. On either side of these ridges and in immediate proximity thereto and protruding from the level portions of the adjacent surfaces I provide teeth 7 vertically disposed and so arranged that the teeth projecting from the upper surface occupy the spaces between the lower teeth and vice versa as shown in Fig. 3.
In operation it is intended to have the iron heated over a gas jet or in any convenient manner, when the thin forward extremity of one portion of the instrument is placed as near as possible to the scalp, when strands of hair after first being oiled, are taken in the fingers and placed between the teeth and also between the upper and lower ridged surfaces. These surfaces press the hair and hold it so that it may be gently pulled and 4 drawn through the teeth by which it is combed and straightened. Another purpose of the teeth is to hold the hair in small groups of strands in order that it may not become tangled.
Having fully described my invention What I desire to claim is A hair straightening instrument comprising pivoted handles each provided at its forward end with a fluted or ridged plate or section, and teeth projecting from the adjacent faces of said sections substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGTON FIELDS.
