and [State of (Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Fireplace Guard Screens, of which the following is a specification. t

One object of my invention is to provide an improved rolling'guard screen which can be used in connection with an open fireplace for the purpose of preventing sparks from flying out of the fireplace. -It-,1s usually the custom to place an inde- 1'5 pendent guardscren in front of, the fireplace. desirable for the reason'that' they must be carried into and out'of position, take up a large amount of space in thefront of the fireplaceand are usually unsightly in appearance. g' i ,1 Another object is to so construct my improved guard, screen that it can he installed in an open fireplace in such manner that when not in use it will be invisiblefrond the outside of the fireplace, and when in use only the screen proper and the hand-holds will be visible.

A further object is to so make my guard screen that all of the parts can be easily installed without detriment to or change of the fireplace structure.

A still further object is to provide and so arrmige the parts of my improved guard screen that the screen propercan be easily and quickly rnoved'into and out of position.

Another object is to make my improved guard screen of a simple and durable construction and so that it'can be quickly and easily manufactured and installed. a

, These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in 4 which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fireplace provided with a guard screen made in accordance with my present invention,

low uprights 11 and 12, which maybe made in the sha e indicated in Figures 2, 3,4 and 7 preferab y of heavy sheet metal. Each of the uprights 11 and '12 includes a channel section 13 having a cover l' l. Each of the covers 14 has an indented portion 15 providing an upright groove 16 forming a guideway for the edge portionof a flexible screen 17. The uprights 11 and 12 are positionedimmediately to the rear of the upright vportions of the facing 10 at opposite sides ofthe opening 9v so that the ,uprights are not visible'viewed from the frontof the fireplace. The screen 17 is adapted to extend entirely across the, opening 9v and the upper portion of the screen is secured to a hollow roller 18 preferably by means of a strip 19 as shown in Figure 5; said'strip being secured to the roller by screws 20 or other suitable means, ,Heads 21 are inserted in opposite ends of, the rollers and are free to rotate on trunnions or short stud axles 22 which are secured in extensions 23 of the uprightsll and 12. The heads 21 are preferably secured by screws such as shown at 24 so that the heads may be readily attached and detached if desired. The trunnion 22 at diameter has pins 26 which fit within holes channel section 13 as clearly shown in Fig ure 4. By providing the above structure the uprights can be made comparatively narrow and sufiicient protection is provided for the parts adjacent the ends of the rollers. The upright 12 provides a casing for the weight 29 and for the flexible connection or chain 28 and at the same time provides guiding means for one edge of the screen 17 By the above construction it is an easy matter to raise the screen and cause the latter to be Wound upon the roller since it is merely necessary to exert a slight pressure downwardly upon the handle 32. This action will cause the chain 28 to rotate the roller so as to wind up the screen and in View of the construction of the upright 12 and weight 29, the latter will slide freely with practically'no vibration. If it is desired to move the screen into a closing posi tion, said screen may be pulled directly downward by pulling downwardlyon the handle 33 or if. desired the handle 32 can be raised and the weight of the screen will cause the free edge thereof to descend into closing position, Furthermore the arrangement is such that the uprights and roller will be hidden back of the facing 10 of the fireplace as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure l.

A fireplace of the character described including a structure having a transversely extending portionand two hollow uprights spaced apart and jointly providing an opening, said uprights including channel sections having covers at their sides providing an enclosed chamber, said covers having indented portions projecting into said chambers and spaced from the front of the channel sections and providing upright grooves in the opposed sides of the uprights, the cover of one of said uprights having a slot lea/din out of the space between its indentation an the front of the adjacent channel; a roller mounted in the back of said transverse portion; jascreen; and a flexible device wound on said roller, said flexible device extending down through the chamber of said latter mentioned upright, said screen being adapted to be pulled down with its opposed side edge portions within said upright grooves to close said opening; and a weight attached to said flexible device and slidably fitting be tween said indentation and the side of said latter channel, said weight having a ri d handle secured thereto and extending out through said slot in a position parallel with the screen in said upright grooves; substantially as described. o
