" Charlottesville, in the county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shades, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to shades and particularly to shades for use on window sashes and the casings thereof, and has for an object to provide a shade that can be conveniently adjusted with respect to the window casing.

The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a shade embody ing few and simple parts and which can be bodily raised or lowered on the window casing, the shade proper being independently operable of the vertical adjustment.

Still further embodiments of the invention reside in a shade embodying counterbalancing features and wherein the frame supporting the shade proper will be counterbalanced by a suitable weight carried in the back of the window casing adjacent the usual sash weight.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a,window casing showing my device applied thereto, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 -4 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose the usual window casing 10, a side of which forms a compartment 11 in which the usual weights (not shown) for the window sashes are adapted to be disposed. A vertical rod 12 is secured to a side of the window casing to support a horizontal frame 13 carrying the usual shade roller supporting members 14: and upon which a suitable shade roller 15 is arranged, carrying the usual shade member 16. The frame 13 includes a supplementary frame 17 formed with or attached to the back of the frame 13 and in which supplementary frame a plurality of roller bearings 18 are journaled to operate upon the rod 12 and facilitate the sliding of the frame 13 upwardly and downwardly on the casing. The lower end of the frame 13 terminates in a suitable hand hold or grip 19 which may be artistically designed and which, aside from aiding in the support of the supplementary frame 17, permits of readily grasping theframe 13 to move the same upwardly or downwardly upon the rod, it' being readily seen that the ends of the frame 13 project across the front of the casing. The other end of the frame 13 carries a projecting tongue-like member 20 passing behind a vertical guide 21 secured to the side of the window casing to aid in guiding the free end of the frame 13 on the casing.

Suitably journaled on the window casing 1.0 is a pulley 22 over which passes a cord 23 having its inner end secured to the frame 13 and its other end secured to a weight or counterbalance 24L arranged in the compartment 11, a guide 25 for the cord being provided on the window casing 10. Near the lower end of the window casing and on one of the sides thereof there is provided a suitable stop member 26 which limits the downward sliding movement of the frame 13 upon the rod.

Now it will be clearly seen that the frame 13 can be vertically adjusted with respect to the window casing by simply grasping the. grip or hand hold and raising or lowering the frame upon the rod and that the shade member can be operated independently of the movement of the frame so that the shade described can be conveniently arranged at any desired elevation on the window casing, the frame, shade member and component parts being of a weight equivalent to the weight of the counterbalance so that when the hand hold is released the frame will remain in the position in which it has been adjusted. As mentioned heretofore, the downward movement of the frame is limited by the stop member 26 which is engaged by one end of the frame as it is moved downwardly on the rod toward the lower end of the window casing.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the shade described consists of few and simple parts and will afford a convenient and practical means for readily adjusting the shade in any desired position with respect t0 the wing or the usual dow sashes on the casing and that the same can be readily and easily operated.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a device of the kind described, in combination, a Window casing, a vertical rod secured to one side of the Window easing, a shade roller-carrying horizontal frame projecting beyond the opposite sides of said window casing, a supplementary frame attached to the back of the first named frame, pintles arranged at the diagonally-opposite corners of said supplementary frame and projecting outwardly at right angles therefrom, rollers journaled upon said pintles between Which rollers said rod extends so l/VILLIAM J.
